player progression

  • Good day everyone,

I have been playing for quite a while now and would love to see some form of character progression of sorts rather than just play to collect cosmetics. Even if it may be boosts to hull armor ship speed, maneuverability, gold rewards or rep due to wearing certain outfit sets, etc. Anything to give a reason other than just buy cosmetics would be kind of nice. Or even a form of skill tree where you may be able to hold more ammo or do more dmg with the sword.

  • ...That be a whole different game.

But! there is a player progression, in the form of commendations! :D Be a legendary pirate who fought and killed the Ghost megalodon?

The progression of unlocking power ups (at this point) will break and ruin the game. Since a good chunk of players will already unlock those perks and dominate the game worse than older players.

    Sorry, My vote is no.

  • The problem with this is, that it would give a big advantage to the people that sink in the hours. dont get me wrong it be cool to get stuff for your time other then cosmetics and currency. but the problem is. a lot of the things would be unbalanced. the alure of sea of thieves is that the person that spent hours in the game can still be topped by a new guy who is simply good at pvp. that would become near impossible of the person who played for hours has all the buffs in the world

hell no - reminds me of 2018 and 2019 requests ;D

the game would be horrible and i'd quit instantly, i'm here for two things, maybe 3
1st is for sure horizontal progression.
I play sandbox open PvP games for over 20 years and progression allways s... very hard, was never balanced and never ever a good thing to have. NEVER!!!!
It completely distracts from real player driven content and ask you to grind, grind, grind.
This game you dont need to grind, you can just play and let all happen by the way, doesnt matter when you swing that shiny cutlass or wear that hat und get this jacket etc.
    Best decision ever!!!
until i would even say remove blunder and EOR, to balance it even more because of the people who had exploited a lot and to some degree still do etc. but this is another story.

i can grant you , the day any vertical progression or itemization find its way through the shroud i'll quit immediatly and say thank you for 3 years, but i cannot support this anymore.

  • I've made some pretty good progress over the last year+

I went from dying 98% of the time in combat to about 95% of the time

and I look 150% sweatier while doing it

  • if you want progression then you have to take away world pvp
the only way to keep open world pvp fair is no progression

any sort of progress indicator would have to be cosmetic only.
similar to how you can only get pirate legend gear after becoming a pirate legend (which is an indicator of getting 50/50/50). similar to faction rewards at each 5th level or clothing unlocked at the various levels.

i'm all for any other "show off" indicators, but there are already titles and clothing and weapons and equipment... what else do you want (assuming cosmetic only)?

  • The game is perfect now, if this game have more rpg and character becomes stronger over time it will ruin everything. Right now everyone are the same and have the same chance for everything.
Only things i can always vote up is more expanding content for pve, new islands, clothes, food, treasures, creatures, exploration, way of doing quests, ships...

It took me a while to get my head around the experience of this game, but I largely agree. The paradigm of this game is simply not about total control, and the lack of micromanagement is it's strength. There are plenty of "wouldn't it be cool if..." ideas one could suggest but, perhaps counterintuitively, less is definitely more in this case. Expanding the map and adding more items are definitely needed in my opinion but I have to say that more levers and buttons might not improve the overall experience as holistically as it initially seems.

    Case in point.

  • @stundorn Personally, I'd be down for some form of itemization boosts but at the same time, have some penalties as well. For example, if say you can hold more cannon balls, make it so that they do a bit less damage each hit. It's a downside to being able to reload much faster without having to restock.

If increasing say Hull resistance. Make it so it's 5-10% max and lower the speed by x amount to balance it out so that it's still not impossible for a new player to sink their opponents.

Just a thought of having something to play for other than oh I look so purty with my shiny sword now. I mean, we're honestly grinding hundreds of hours just for looks and nothing else to show for it. What's the point? might as well just get Naval action and have many more ships to chose from while doing the exact same thing.

  • @stonedbooty

my point is having fun and maybe roleplay a little.
I am year one legend, i am athena 20 for many month and also have all factions at 75 plus almost all commendations, only a few left, but i dont grind and never have grinded.
the beauty of this game is, i dont need to and everything happened by the way playing and immersing into the game.

The things you mentioned just make it hard to balance and open the field for flaws and glitches etc.
I dont need such things and since UO i allways disliked stuff like this and wanted a game like SoT.
If i would be able to make an MMORPG it would have zero progression, only cosmetics and would be about players knowledge and skill in the game.
The features would promote roleplay when and wherever possible, even in the heat of a battle PvE or PvP.

If i would have made SoT it would have no factions, only message in the bottle and nothing gated behing reputation, but only gold.
I'm a sandbox RPvPer, the stuff that got so popular the last 20 years arent that much my thing.
Mincraft it would be but i cannot stand these graphics, sorry i'm so happy to have cool looking games and i dont need to play 8 bit pixel stuff anymore, that i - although i played them a lot - am not that retro hyped regarding grafics :P
A good game needs not only cool grafics, but gameplay is way more important, but without a shiny and cool look i also dont get hooked and play it a lot.
There is ton of good games i refuse to play because the look and feel is not my thing.
To me immersion/grafik is key followed by the gampleay and when online and with PvP without any gamemechanics influencing progression.
For SP or pure PvE Games i dont mind it and just play my way.

  • No. The game was specifically designed not to do this.
