Reaper's Bones Makes Solo Casual Play A Living Hell

  • Below is a message written with a feather dipped in salty gamer tears. This type of post is likely very familiar to most of you here. I am new to the Sea of Thieves and I have played 40 hours. You may ignore this post for this reason if you choose.

Do I have to apologize for wasting hours of my day doing voyages under an Emissary flag just to get my ship sunk by a Reaper's Bones Emissary ship? Is this not extremely punishing? Do I HAVE to play the game with other players in my crew to progress my faction reputation? Do I HAVE to learn how to play in PvP combat even when I don't want to?

I could simply not play the game if this is the way things are. I can say, "Yes, I finally made it to the end of the game, level 30 rep in the main three factions!" At that point, there is no choice if you want purely solo gameplay. That, or I have to simply "git gud." Sure thing, maybe in a couple thousand in-game hours and after the hundredth sink. Looking forward to it!

Right. Now that I'm sobered up after many swigs of sarcasm, I would like to say that I hope this doesn't come across as me saying that the game is bad. It isn't and it would be disingenuous of me if I said otherwise. I showed interest upon it's launch and followed a small YouTube series until it died, but I regained that interest since the game went on Steam, as I play on PC. Playing the game, it is beautiful and distinct in it's style, presentation and gameplay. It's a nice experience, one unique from most popular titles out there. I like the game.

Literally my only gripe with it is the fact that the game's always online. I have had positive experiences encountering other players before, but the Reaper's Bones Emissary is a flag waved high giving the middle finger to every pirate out there. They're the poopdeck party poopas (with an "ers" it's a restricted word lol) of the sea, and you can't tell them to not approach you because they won't listen. And hey, that's how they designed the faction. It's part of the lore and it's part of pirating. Hate the pirate, not the game. I know it's not one of those mechanics that adjusts to your skill level or your ship size because that adjustment is other players, and that is not a bug for the dev team to fix.

If you read this to the end, thank you and I hope you understand where I'm coming from.

  • I’ll be honest. If your trying todo reapers bones casually? Then you shouldn’t do reapers. It’s a faction that’s meant for pvp. Someone like me for example who easily bulldozes other ships that fight me? It’s perfect. If you wanna casually do it? Get a crew to friends who are good at pvp. Helps a lot for some who wants to “casually” grind a pvp faction.

  • I get what ur saying but reapers get xp by stealing if you pve only ur gonna level much slower.

Solo is tough. I personally don't like sloops or brigs. So it's easier for me. I enjoy talking to people. But if your gonna run reapers making a looking for group. I make lfgs all the time your welcome to join if you see my post I generally only running reapers

  • The emissary system is optional. If you don't want to take the increased risk of being hunted by a Reaper's Bones ship, don't fly an emissary flag.

  • The game revolves around pvp. It is not about grinding for gold for hours, it's about having legendary battles, learning to keep your wits about you and to defend your treasure, maybe even steal others'. I understand it is VERY frustrating to lose your loot, but there are a thousand ways you can prevent that from happening. Don't hoard more treasure on your boat than you are comfortable to lose, learn to defend your ship and trick your enemy. Do not grind the game, it's not fun. Just go where the seas take you, lose your first three battles and then be even more excited when you sink your first ship. Don't be afraid of that four - man - galleon in the distance. Take risks. After all, it's just a game, and you can get the same amount of loot the next session. It's not about the gold, it's about the glory.

  • Reaper's Bones is meant to be the riskiest faction to rep and it's also the most PvP-focused, despite a lot of PvEapers out there.

There are PvP players who specifically hunt Reapers and "Running Reapers" are a bit of a meme at this stage. If you want to do "solo casual play", representing the Reaper's Bones is the worst way to do it.

  • @b3afy The best way to deal with it is to perfect your awareness and 'running' skills. Before you leave your ship solo, make sure to check your horizon for any ships. Even if they don't seem hostile, consider them an enemy. I would say trust no-one unless you're in an alliance with another ship half the map away. Also the benefit of going solo is having the Sloop. If you can get yourself moving and against the wind with your sail facing forward (most important sailing tip for solo sloopers) nobody will ever be able to catch you. Although PvP players may consider this scummy or annoying, all you are doing is protecting your loot. During this you can also attempt a board of the enemy ship. Even if you aren't good at PvP, the most important thing is dropping their anchor, be annoying, throw fire or blunderbombs, anything really that will stall this crew from chasing you. The majority of the time you will either get away or the crew won't want to fight you. Hope this helps.

  • @b3afy
It's working as intended ... when you put up an emissary flag you are advertising yourself as a target with loot on board or at least a flag that's worth gold and rep and is also part of a commendation.
And you're not only advertising yourself for crew with the Reaper emissary, but for everybody, at least you can see the Reaper crew coming ...

You want the bonus, you get some risk to go with it.

If you don't like to lose loot to another crew: don't advertise your whereabouts, don't have more loot on your ship than you care to lose and keep an eye on the map and the horizon.

  • The entire emissary system was designed to increase PvP for those who want to opt into it. It was an answer to players who were looking for leaderboards, bounties and so on. Players have an incentive to join emissaries because they receive a boost in gold and they can level up a new faction, but they have PvP bait on their ship that increases in value (their flag). Crews seeking PvP have an incentive to join Reapers, and their ship is advertised on the map to everyone on the server the moment they join. They have a bounty (their flag) and a wanted poster (their position) that increases the reward the more successful they become. It also takes just a little of the pressure off those who want less PvP because players won’t see a flag to steal and they never show up on the map for Reaper’s Bones emissaries.

The system is not just another set of groups for you to gain reputation in. Players have so many options to choose from as they pick three factions to reach PL. Unless you are looking for PvP, do not join emissaries. You don’t need to level them up at all. They are a PvP enhancer and they are 100% optional. There are plenty of solo players who are successful emissaries. Anyone who comes to the forums to complain about PvP among the emissaries does not understand the system at all.

  • like everyone else said

@d3adst1ck said in Reaper's Bones Makes Solo Casual Play A Living Hell:

The emissary system is optional. If you don't want to take the increased risk of being hunted by a Reaper's Bones ship, don't fly an emissary flag.

    • Don't fly the emissary flag.
    • Watch the horizon, every other ship is a threat - run or prepare to fight.
    • sell your loot often. They can't steal it if it's not on your ship.
    • Sail into the wind (when running).
  • Many have said this before, so this is just a repeat, emissary makes you a prime target for anybody but especially for reapers bones. If you Solo, emissary its not worth it. I see many people when they join server will run around looking at table and if they see emissary they will raise reapers bones emissary to go hunting. If there are no emissaries they will leave server. So raise emissary only if you are prepared to fight.

  • I've hit grade 5 Merchant emissary solo several times, never once lost my flag due to hostile players. The first thing you need to recognize is that playing Solo is already effectively a handicap. Second, playing with an Emissary flag paints a big target on your back, since sinking an emissary forces their flag to drop, which is worth gold and reputation with the Reapers' Bones based on the emissary level.

  • It’s a multiplayer cooperative game.

You are choosing to play it Alone...”Solo”.

There is no sympathy for self inflicted wounds

You are literally playing the game wrong.

  • @b3afy

If you read this to the end, thank you and I hope you understand where I'm coming from.

I mean, you're frustrated that you're being sunk and I get it. Losing obviously isn't the most fulfilling part of the game experience but this is kind of what you signed up for when you bought and downloaded the game.

Sea of Thieves is a multiplayer game. A shared world crew based experience. Team play is catered to far more than solo by design, so you've already got yourself at a disadvantage there.

Emissary play is based around the premise of high risk for high reward. If you want the multiplied reward benefits from being an emissary, you have to deal with the drawback of being a target for a Reaper's Bones Emissary - there's no flaw here, it's a simple balance of risk and reward.

If you want a more comfortable solo experience, start by leaving the Emissary flag off of your ship while you hone your skills and watch some videos on YouTube for pointers on being a one-pirate crew. There's plenty of good advice out there.

I'm sorry you don't like that Sea of Thieves is a perpetually online/multiplayer game, but it certainly wasn't advertised as anything other than that.

  • Well Reapers do their own thing... they hunt for emissary flags and loot to plunder. That is their sole purpose in the game... and the Emissary flags are made to be PvP beacons. The carrot of the Emissary system is the bonus you get, and the balance to the system is the service the Reapers provide.

Every bonus needs a counter weight, and that is how a game is balanced.

  • @b3afy

The emissary system is an opt-in for a higher reward, higher risk strategy. When you by choice fly under an emissary flag, you by default void all rights to complain about being sunk by other ships and especially Reapers as it is their objective to sink other emissary ships. You put a target on your own back... don't complain.

The reapers emissaries are always visible on the map, so why are you even near them? Either learn to play better, accept loss with grace and take the risks you are willing to take. Sell when you are not willing to lose what you are carrying and take the risks that suit your needs. This is an online PvEvP game, play accordingly! If you are fed up with being solo, crew up.

  • @b3afy
I don't have anything to add that hasn't been said.

Your fun writing style warms my heart, despite the disenchanted nature of the post. I'll drink to your good fortune in future endeavors

  • I think the pvp it's the base of this game and, for this reason, all of us have to be pretty good at it. And mate, I say it for experience, with a bit of dedication you will become really good at it. Happy sailing!

  • @mr-rattles
    @ajm123
    @realstyli

They weren't talking playing as a Reaper casually and alone, they were talking about playing alone and casually but having to deal with reapers.
    Just to be clear.
