SoT has already had microtransactions, with Ancient Coins, but atleats you could earn thoughs without spending money, but now a battle pass, now Rare is hungry for money. What do you think?

I'm not a fan of battlepass or anything and from what I can gather this one might act differently from normal ones.

So understand that what I'm about to say isn't in defense of the battle pass. I hate those things with a passion. Not because of the money used for them, I just hate how it changes the games.

However, you do realize that besides the purchase of SoT. You don't spend anything on the game.

This is a multiplayer game that require servers, developers, updates, bug fixes, and a mess of other things that require MONEY to keep running.

When the market switched to "free to play" micro-transactions had taken over because again the company needs a flow of income to provide maintenance and updates for the games that we are playing.

Multiplayer games use to require a monthly subscription. Which honestly IMHO was soooooo much better.

Don't hate on a game for adding microtransactions when its a multiplayer game. Servers aren't free, the developers that add the content aren't free, the company that is keeping the game alive is not free.

Income is needed to keep the game running.

  • I don't believe that gameplay in a pirate game is toxic no matter how people play
I think toxic behavior is a small minority and is not promoted or encouraged by pretty much anyone of significance around the game

I think the pirate emporium is a great way for them to make money without causing damage to the game (as of now)

I have no issue saying that I like that this game is unique and am not a fan of it heading in a more cookie cutter route however I certainly understand why it is and am willing to give whatever they throw at us a shot. The details of what is coming do not accurately match up with the outrage and accusations in my opinion.

The amount of fun I've had compared to how much money I've put in is the best deal I've ever made.
The amount of free stuff thrown my way has been ridiculous and I appreciate it. They could crash this game right into an outpost and I still got my money's worth a million times over

  • @xultanis-dragon yeah you are right about that, but it is going to make the game more toxic, i dont think the players play in toxic way, it how they behave. constantly throwing slurs and swears at you for absolutly no reason, and on top of that a battle pass. I just hope its like Apex Legends because as ar as I know, that gae is not very toxic, i hope they dont do what Fortnite did.

From what I've seen the people that are always exaggerating about the toxicity within this game just so happen to be on the losing end of battles and they use their perceived toxic experiences to push something not related to it at all. Using it as a tool to try to get what they want.

I almost never see people coming in here saying "I love this game but can we work this type of behavior" It's almost always I don't like this and I don't like that and I got sunk and oh by the way the game is totally toxic all the time so let's make these changes not related to toxicity

  • @wolfmanbush yeah... you are right, sadly. i need a life.

  • My thoughts are that there's no obligation to get the premium tier of the season pass. The free one is another route to maybe grind different cosmetic rewards, if you want. I don't see that it changes the dynamics of the game any more than the existence of the Emporium does. It's not putting anything behind an additional paywall that wasn't already behind one.

I think you are overreacting and possibly also a noob if you think pirates being pirates is toxic.

Of course if you mean toxic by players swearing ect then that's different entirely. But that's present in every online game. That's not Rare's fault.

  • I just don't have enough information about the new plunder pass to comment about it yet.

  • Plunder pass isn’t a “Pay to win” thing. It’s literally for cosmetics. It’s not gonna change anything. Why people get upset over this is odd in itself. Those who get the Plunder Pass are helping the game expand. They need money to expand the game and add additional content, servers etc. It all cost money. If anything you’re investing in the game so it can continue to grow. I see it as a positive. I understand not everyone has the money to pay for a Plunder Pass or Battle Pass like on COD. But it is literally for cosmetics. Nobody is getting some special weapon or ship thats gonna help them win a PVP fight.

  • @birdbot500

if stuff looks like the recent icy twitch drops i can happily refuse.
If SoT wont add anything realy huge next year that please me, i wave goodbye.
The route the game took for me was the wrong one.
In 2018 players didnt like the game.
In 2019/20 many players came to SoT and like the game
But the best time i had was 2018 and early 2019 and since then the game is going down to me, because of how the community and game have evolved over time.

I just dont have fun anymore, i cannot immerse that good with too much comical fantasy stuff far beyond the iconic pirate theme.
It's like allways i like niche games and games that are unique.
This game and community is going to be too much mainstream for me and with mainstream i also mean the way the community acts and games the system.

I loved the game in 2018. I loved the game in 2019. I loved the game in 2020. I fully expect to continue loving the game into 2021 and beyond. Do I love every single feature they've ever added? No. Of course not. But most updates have improved the game by adding depth and variety. The core of what makes Sea of Thieves so immersive and fun hasn't changed a bit. It's still the same wacky, cartoonish, open-world adventure where anything can happen and usually does.

If you don't like the "comical fantasy stuff" feel free to ignore it. But it's hard to make a case that the game's ever been well-grounded in reality to begin with. There are all kinds of silly things that make no sense, like firing oneself from a cannon (and surviving), shooting flintlocks underwater, eating whole pieces of fruit to avoid drowning, lunging through the air with nothing but a cutlass to propel you...well, it's a pretty long list. It's all "comical fantasy stuff." Things like outfits and ship liveries are easy. If you don't like them, don't use them. Be a bastion of well-grounded pirate sensibility if you like, and avoid the more fanciful accoutrements.

The great thing about Sea of Thieves is that we can all play the way we want to play. And we don't necessarily have to stick to only one way. We can mix it up. I often go for the more realistic, "piratey" look, for both myself and my ship. But sometimes I slap on something completely outrageous, just for the sake of fun and variety. No rules! And none of it changes the fundamental gameplay. Both in history and fantasy, the pirate life has always been about freedom more than anything else. And Sea of Thieves offers that in abundance. :)

  • @xultanis-dragon perfectly said

  • Here for my daily Six Months Check in.

I honestly can't be fussed about it. Although it feels like the game is gonna lose a bit of it's identity by joining the horde of "battle pass" games, at least in the case of this, it's purely for cosmetics and doesn't seem to affect when new content will be added much.
Battle pass systems are a slippery slope though, and a lot of developers seem to use them to find excuses to be lazy. So we're just going to have to hope and see how Rare handles this new method going forward.

  • Servers are expensive, artists are expensive, programmers are expensive, designers are expensive. This is a one time purchase game, all new playable content is free. They have to keep the servers up and running, keep all the updates they put out comming, and pay all the people who make that happen.

And they are financing all of that continued development through optional purchases that do not give you any advantage in the game. That is a really great model, and sticking to it is great to see. Corporate structures generally focus on short term gains, I guarantee there is and has been pressure for a more aggressive monetization strategy (i.e. pay to win).

As for toxicity, i have personally hardly ever run across it. Yes, occasionally there are some (maybe like 1 ship in every 4 play sessions in my case), but the vast majority of people I run across dont say anything at all. I think the toxic interactions stick in people's minds because people tend to remember negative things more. Things can always be improved, but I think overall sea of thieves is one of the better communities out there. Last time I was logged in, we were hunting emissary flags in between skele captain kills for the event. Sank a solo slooper for that sweet reapers rep and then ran into him later and chilled with the dude for like a half hour with his loot still on board our ship and knocked out his cursed cannonball deed of giving. Just gotta throw up the GG's and raise a tankard of grog.

  • No one really forces you to pay. It’s all cosmetics and emotes, nothing pay to win or anything. And toxicity is to be expected. It comes with any online game. But, only play and pay if you want to.
    Happy Sailing

  • Revive killed the game. So many friends quit when that got introduced. It was never asked for, not anywhere in these forums or Reddit etc where crying out for "we need revive" Rare did it anyway cos other games have it. To the OP yep it's going down quicker than a newbie ship.

  • @methetron-mkii I don't think it has killed the game IMO. That seems to be the case with the vast majority of the player base. I haven't heard of many players complaining about it apart from you. I get that a board to an enemy ship can be made pointless if you only kill 1 or 2 players who just end up getting revived, but it adds an entirely new dynamic to player and ship PvP. It's another crucial decision to take into account during frantic battles. If you go for the revive, you might end up dying, however, you may also earn another crewmate back to help you on your ship.

  • @xultanis-dragon all I’ll say is it’s different

  • @birdbot500 Fun Fact: The Actual Battle Pass with New Cosmetics doesn't ANYTHING. Plus how would adding a battle pass make the game more toxic?

  • @methetron-mkii I find that if your enemy is allowed to revive their crew mate, you’re doing something wrong anyway. Reviving leaves someone vulnerable for a few seconds, which is usually enough to kill them. If they can revive, you’re probably dead anyway.

  • This thread’s been done to death, but I just want to say the battle pass will be free. A premium aspect won’t, but of course that’s optional and top rewards can still be earned without spending a penny. It may be jumping on the bandwagon, but at least a battle pass offers gameplay-based rewards and lacks rng (better than loot boxes right?). Plus if it’s free, you lose nothing.

  • @birdbot500 It's probably not fair to say that Rare is 'hungry for money'. SoT is a game-as-a-service that you play for the initial asking price (i.e. around $30). As the game requires constant maintenance and servers running, there are significant ongoing costs involved. Ultimately, Rare (and Microsoft) need to recoup those ongoing costs and there are only so many people you can sell a full-priced game.

Now, having said that, it's probably true that many people are playing the game via GamePass and Xbox players are also paying for Live, so that's a slightly different matter. I feel that it would be fair for GamePass Ultimate subscribers to get the plunder pass as part of that, but I guess we'll see.
