Why is this Game so toxic? What to do against it?

  • @mk-raw said in Why is this Game so toxic? What to do against it?:

@d3adst1ck while saling OK, but waiting at the cash in locations?

You won't believe me I bet but that seriously never normally happens. If it does there are always tell tale signs like mermaids facing the outpost or a rowboat or a ship at the jetty..

Take the extra 2 minutes to circle the outpost and check if you are unsure or have valuable loot.

  • @mk-raw they can be detected even if they don't have a ship there.

If you are saying they camped the outpost, there are ways to tell. A rowboat or a mermaid on the coast of the outpost is a sure sign someone is hiding there. Circle the outpost if you are worried and look for either of these.

If you find signs that someone may be there, sail to another one. There are a total of 7 outposts across the sea and also Reaper's if you wanted to sell to that faction for a grand total of 8 turn in points. There will only ever be a max of 5 other ships on the server. It would be an EXTREMELY unlikely possibility for people to be camping every single turn in point in the sea.

  • @mk-raw said in Why is this Game so toxic? What to do against it?:

@d3adst1ck while saling OK, but waiting at the cash in locations?

Well I have to tell you that people actually camping outposts is rare and not an efficient way to play (or even grief for that matter). There are 7 different outposts and up to 6 possible ships on a server, meaning that there should always be at least one port free. And a crew just waiting at a particular outpost to jump someone is not an efficient way to spend there time, they'd be better off sailing and looking for ships than sitting at an outpost twiddling their thumbs on the off chance someone stops there to turn in.

Even so, there is nothing wrong with people who do play this way. May be cheap but some pirates are dastardly and looking for an easy score. But as I said it is not a very efficient way to make bank or even grief players as there would be long waits with no one around, thus not very common.

Just learn to be more aware before docking at an outpost - look for ships there before you get too close using the spyglass, check for mermaids floating in the water, see if there is a rowboat there, and check the horizon for any ships that may be nearby.

I have played this game for over two years now and have still yet to see all these out post campers that people talk of. Only time I have dealt with someone camping near outpost is while a fort is going on and you will see a ship hanging out near the nearest outpost which is why one should never go to the nearest outpost after a fort.

Either people are exaggerating to make a point or they are confusing people who are shopping as "outpost" campers if these people are off ship and on island. Either way this situation is nothing that a quick sail around of an outpost can not solve.

Bought the game on Day 1. Got killed at an outpost on Day 1 (there was another ship there - lol).

Thousands of outpost visits later, it has never happened since.

I just started Sot a few weeks ago. In the beginning, none of my friends would like to play this game with me, so I played by myself for a few days. It didn't took long as i got [Mod edit] up by 4 random guys. So the first impression wasn't really good.

I started a few days later with a friend. We famred some chests and beat old horatio. After these fight we just wanted to cash in our rewards. But just as always, some motherlovers screwed us over and stealed all our loot. 3 hours of Farming gone, and it wasn't the first time. These people are more toxic then the hole R6 Community. Every single time you get goofed by these dudes. Any suggestions besides quitting this game?

i can't tell if your baiting or not

but its funny how you should mention R6 toxic community

how is this game anywhere near the toxicity of R6??? you ever even played this game??? or R6 for that matter??????

how can you make such a comparison with so little time spent in a game as to judge the entire community off of what? 2 crews????

i was installing the game last night so i watched my friend play some comp matches while i waited she played about 10 matches and in every single one of those matches she was trolled teamkilled trash talked and degraded because of her gender and im not even joking out of all those matches not a single match was she left alone or treated properly like jesus 10 matches in a row and toxicity in every single one?? don't know how she still plays the game as she gets this treatment every time she plays it

when i play this game with her we run in on the occasional toxic player and we obliterate that player but the toxicity of this game doesn't even nearly scratch the surface of R6

what to do against toxicity? report and ignore move on and don't get stuck up but most importantly don't fall to their level but thats the case for verbal toxicity

but in your case no toxicity was even commited so i dont know why you made this post

robbing people is not toxic killing people is not toxic so don't worry no crime was commited

I think it's a mix of exaggeration and focus. The latter being that some people are so focused on the moments of loss they experience, that they lose sight of the hours of otherwise uninterrupted play.

This game is basically a tailor-made dream for trolls. I know that's not what Rare intended, but that is the result. That is why you see requests on these forums literally everyday for private servers. Why they don't just release a server install for people to run their own servers is just mind-numblingly nonsensical to everyone except the 12 professional forum users who reply to every post about it and insult anyone who dares to not see the "vision" of the game.

    This. 1000000x this.

And it doesn't help that this is literally the only thing that the streamers do, so any prospective players on Twitch will perceive it as such.

I've actually joined a Reapers Looking for Group posts to just see who these players were, and one of the guys straight up said "let's make them regret every joining this server."

It did sound very pirate-like, but it really did not sound healthy at all. He seemed to have a lot of insecurities IRL he was taking out on other people in this game.

  • @thagoochiestman

I agree. And it doesn't help that this is literally the only thing that the PvErs do, so any prospective players who just bought Sea of Thieves will perceive it as such.

I've actually joined a Alliance server posts to just see who these players were, and one of the guys straight up said "Even though I bought a game that is advertised as a PvP game, I hate PvPing and despise everyone who enjoys PvP."

It did sound very pirate-like, but it really did not sound healthy at all. He seemed to have a lot of insecurities IRL he was taking out on other people in this game.

Anyways, I agree with what you're saying. People who hate other players just for their playstyle deserve to be kicked from the game and banned from Sea of Thieves, especially the PvEers.

  • @thagoochiestman I mean, we could just eliminate the Reapers faction from the game and everything that is attached to it.

Hint: entire emissary system, because Reapers are the risk in that risk/reward system players opt into by raising any emissary flag.

Wow, you sure do have a lot of time on your hands.

I just login, play pirate for a few hours and logoff.

I'm happy that Sea of Thieves is a source of entertainment for me, rather than it being a source of anxiety and frustration.

  • I think everyone has come across their fair share of toxic behavior most of behavior i receive in this game is generally people inviting me to voice chat to tell me what they think of me. I probably shouldnt join those but i got to tell you recording it and playing it back to them is really funny.
Some of this stuff your talking about like outpost camping doesnt sound like toxic behavior just people using different tactics to get that steal.
Theft is going to happen youre going to sink and lose things you worked for but each time it should be a lesson. Weve all lost hours of work and weve all stolen hours of work itll balance eventually. I personally lost a 10 hour loot stack it hurt but hey i got a few good screen shots. I know that other crew was grinning ear to ear after that tho. End the end its just a game so try to have as much fun as you can.

  • The only toxicity that I have seen in this game was on the forums...

  • They should honestly instantly lock topics about Toxic PvPers, just being PvPers sinking you & PvE servers because PvE players seem to have Zero awareness.

I am getting honestly tired & worried for these players not being able to handle getting killed & sunk in a pirate game.

  • @cpt-sockmonster Locked? No, not necessarily. But an official response prior to the possibility of a lock? Certainly.

Well to be completely honest I find that fact that you go out of your way to join groups just to do case studies on who people are who play as Reapers more disturbing than what that pirate said.

Also as my grandma said "if you go looking for trouble you will find it" Maybe should stop playing games and actually play the game.

  • @mk-raw
Cash in more frequently. It's more irritating than completing all quests, but that's the trade-off. Smoother hunting, riskier play; tedious sailing, safer pay.

  • They need to just sell it as a pvp game.

Yeah, I PvEd my butt off tonight until another sloop came along and PvPd me. It was an awesome fight.

  • There are also Discords for you to join if you need some extra help. There are plenty of players who are willing to help new players get a feel for the game.

It sucks hard losing your loot, I know that feeling greatly but to get attacked by another player isn't toxic. If said player was throwing slurs/being toxic on voice chat then yes, that is toxic behavior.

But if the player happened along you and your friend during a public event and attacked you it is part of the game. It's called Sea of Thieves, not Sea of Ignoring a Public Event.

If you're still interested in playing this game I highly recommend checking out the forum that has a bunch of groups posting for new members to their fleet. You won't be alone and will have someone watching your back.

  • @galactic-geek I do agree. But you get my point.

  • @jollyolsteamed Ive played 2 months this game and I can surely confirm it. Most people interactions are toxic and usually not worth for both ships; a lots of pvpers (lots of streamers too in fact) are mostly here to troll and inflict pain upon others, even noobs, for fun.

the game journeys are wonderful, but something is always missing... and pvp wants to fill that void.

This does not mean that the whole community is toxic, in the forum sometimes you hear some nice folks, even ingame... but then you go ingame and about 75 percent of the time its people flaming people on pvp cause they lost or because they win, simply because the design of the pvp (broken hitrecon, ping, bugs on weapons, pvp design overal) is not up to the idea of this game. it just dont work yet.

This is exactly why most of the new content is pve, and the pvp as of late is the picture od people coming to try to troll Y because X streamer did it awesomely.

  • Just yesterday, I endeavored to complete the daily challenge while solo slooping, which was to shoot another ship with a CCB while flying the Reaper's Mark flag. As I finished supplying at Daggertooth, I saw a brigantine fly by, also with the same flag. I pursued, keeping a fair distance behind them. I called out to them with my speaking trumpet but got no response. I had 4 CCBs, but didn't want to risk firing on them for fear of wasting the shot. As I followed them, I looked at the map table and noticed that there were 3 other ships, all with the same flag, all congregating near the Sea Dog tavern.

"This should be easy!" I thought to myself. It wasn't.

I planned on sailing right between the flotilla of ships at full speed and shoot at them as I go. No harm, no foul. No such luck...

A single pirate swam towards my ship. I couldn't course correct unless I wanted to miss my opening, so I prepared for the boarder. As I heard him climb, I stated flatly, "no" and open-fired.

As if on queue, so did every other ship. A random blunderbomb rocked my ship to 1 side causing it to collide with another ship. Numerous pirates boarded and set my deck on fire.

Figuring I stood a better chance elsewhere, I abandoned ship, and decided to use my CCBs by commandeering 1 of their cannons instead, since they were a lined up like ducks in a row.

I managed to fire 2 shots, but thanks to the waves, chaos, and relative closeness of the ships, both shots were wasted. This, of course alerted the other pirates. I was set upon by no less than 7 pirates at once.

I futilely attempted to defend myself and fight back while screaming at them for making something so simple such as the daily challenge so much 🤬 harder. I was cut down in short order and was hazelnutbearded before I could enact my revenge.

I will never understand why 4 ships can peaceably sit together, to complete a task, but not allow a 5th to join them... SIGH 🙄

  • @galactic-geek alliance server during setup and you weren't invited! Toxic, absolutely toxic alliance server folks.

i've been sailing for just about 3 years now 2 and a half maybe? and i must say my experiences are alot different from yours

that 75% you talk about no its not 75% toxic people

75% of people i meet don't even speak or type

10% doesn't even want to fight so they sail away

10% who fight and have a way to communicate usually talk to teammates

that 5% are toxic i rarely meet a person who insults me (might be because i can take words having been used to this treatment for years of my life but i honestly don't consider it toxic to a punishable degree)

i'd also like to clarify what isn't toxic
    1: sinking people
    2: killing people
    3: stealing people's loot
    4: sinking people for fun
    5: killing people for fun
6: stealing people's loot for fun
7: telling someone to "git gud" (i take these as a joke)
8: telling someone that they got beaten

however what is toxic theres are a couple of them and most of them involve verbal action so i'll name a few

1: insults (like bad language and some of the below)
    2: sexism
    3: racism

the game journeys are wonderful, but something is always missing... and pvp wants to fill that void.

This does not mean that the whole community is toxic, in the forum sometimes you hear some nice folks, even ingame... but then you go ingame and about 75 percent of the time its people flaming people on pvp cause they lost or because they win, simply because the design of the pvp (broken hitrecon, ping, bugs on weapons, pvp design overal) is not up to the idea of this game. it just dont work yet.

pvp works fine (sure the hitreg can mess you up and i haven't encounterd any bugs with them)

i also want to clarify that ping is not the game's fault 90% of the time its user based issues

that 75% does not exist for me

im not denying the fact that toxic people exist they sure do but in my opinion people are too sensetive and call everything toxic

and when i say people are sensetive i mean really sensetive alot of people can't take jokes or sarcasm and something that was meant to be an innocent harmless joke turns out to be the worst insult in human history for some reason?

This is exactly why most of the new content is pve, and the pvp as of late is the picture od people coming to try to troll Y because X streamer did it awesomely.

actually no they try to balance out the content between the two as to not focus on one side only and focus on both sides there was a time we got pvp updates in rows when reapers came out if im not mistaken it was reapers then fort of the damned (both pvp orientated content)

i honestly find the streamer arguement unfair some people are toxic by nature

while i don't watch streamers and i don't like the influence they have ingames (just because they play the game and are popular doesn't always mean they know whats best for the game)

but however if Y decides to copy X its not always X's fault

sometimes that Y goes "but Y not" then we have the butterfly effect if X never streamed would Y still commit his toxic behaivor or would he not?

i would say "yes.. yes he would"

i have moderated game servers for years and i do mean YEARS (mainly tf2 community servers and gmod ttt servers having moderated one of the biggest ttt communites of gmod i was dealing with around 100 people aday and you meet a wide variety of personalities and behaivours let me tell you)

i know what people are capable of

AND i know exactly WHY they do it

they're like kids they get a rush from the reaction (that doesn't mean they watched some streamer do it and wanted to copy) there are some legit bad people in the gaming world but the number people exaggerate in this game really doesn't exist

  • Keep your eye on the horizon.
If you see ship assume it’s always a pirate coming your way.
When at an island doing something always keep your eye on your boat and looking out to the sea watching for another boat.
When going to an outpost circle it 1st look for a mermaid.
Don’t stockpile treasure turn in often.

  • its a game thats built and intended to be toxic, the way to have fun in this game is to make sure you are being the most toxic, attack everyone all the time, betray people, sink people even if all they have is a single worthless gem. The game doesnt have any real pve anyway, it has like 6 missions and thats it, so just go for bloody murder. if you cant do that then stop playing it.

I wonder if the forums of rust have people complaining about pvp too..

Oh yes they do, Here is example replay from Rust forum :)
"That kid thinks when people PVP in a PVP game that makes them toxic. He needs to go back to Minecraft"

    Here is original beef post:

**spend hr of your time just to have it wasted in 30 sec. pvp game that literally punishes its players for pvping. pvp outside of any outpost. can't enter any outposts for 30 mins after killing or shooting someone outside the range of outpost. make sense if it happened inside but <<OUTSIDE.!!>> community is just awful. can't team up with anyone unless it is someone you know. other wise befriend someone in game is a bad idea. community is beyond Toxic. and completely ruin the game. just leaves a bad impression. honestly this game is not worth playing. *side effects from playing is Seizures-Headaches-Stress-and frustration. nothing about this game provides any kind of fun experience for any solo new players. (NEW) players be WARNED!! server communities are not
new player friendly even if it is in the description box for server. (new player friendly) LIE!!! have 450 hrs on this game. lost count how many times i've witnessed new players quitting simply because of how toxic this game is. Don't buy Don't play Don't waste your money. or time on this game. and give it a few mins maybe a day. rust and steam will try to have this discussion removed so that new players will be taken advantage of. rust will steal your money. As of today. my last straw has been burned. i am taking my 2k follower/clan members with me and we are all moving to (Entropia universe). this game on the ground to be used as our rug. **"
    "

    and another one
"I wish I had read this before paying out good money. I've quit already due to how toxic it is. As a new player it was almost like the server was making a point to drive me away from the game. Killed over 25 times by other players in less than 90 mins. Managed to build a 1 room wooden shack to have it destroyed and me killed minutes later by a group of players. I would respawn only to be gunned down instantly. It was just a good laugh for them to kill any joy a new player might feel at playing a new game. Trash community. "
