Why is this Game so toxic? What to do against it?

  • I just started Sot a few weeks ago. In the beginning, none of my friends would like to play this game with me, so I played by myself for a few days. It didn't took long as i got [Mod edit] up by 4 random guys. So the first impression wasn't really good.

I started a few days later with a friend. We famred some chests and beat old horatio. After these fight we just wanted to cash in our rewards. But just as always, some motherlovers screwed us over and stealed all our loot. 3 hours of Farming gone, and it wasn't the first time. These people are more toxic then the hole R6 Community. Every single time you get goofed by these dudes. Any suggestions besides quitting this game?

  • @mk-raw I am sorry that it happened but it is part of the risk in the gme.

  • Killing players and stealing their loot isn't toxic, that is the game. You were at a server event, which is advertised to everyone, so expect to have visitors.

  • @mk-raw don’t do the world events (cloud in the sky) if you don’t want to get into a fight over it. That is how those events are designed.

Also don’t raise an emissary flag as that is opting in to being hunted by other ships as well.

Stick to the standard faction quests you buy. Always check the horizon for ships when you get to each island and raise your sail and keep your anchor up to be ready to leave at any moment. Check the horizon every time you bring back a piece of treasure to the ship.

Turn in treasure often. Even after every island if you wanted. This turns that 3 hours of loot lost into about 15 minutes of loot and only a few pieces if you lose a battle.

There are tons of combat advice I could give but it’s best to just watch some videos to see how to handle yourself and your ship. Beardageddon on twitch is a great solo player if you are looking on a play style for that.

  • @mk-raw So what pray tell did they do that was toxic? Attack you? Steal the treasure on your ship? Sorry to tell you but none of that was toxic, that is called playing the game.

Unless they verbally harassed you or specifically targeted you repeatedly, then nothing "toxic" happened. It is a PvPvE, shared world game - others may be fiends or foes, it is nothing personal with it just them playing the game in their way.

Learn to be aware of your surroundings, use voice chat to see if they might be friendly (or willing to deal, you might be able to buy your freedom), learn your ships advantages (sloop is fastest into the wind for example)...generally just try to learn to play the game. Try to develop either evasive or offensive tactics depending upon your playstyle.

The game is not always like you claim, I myself rarely encounter other players but I am also pretty cautious as I play solo mostly. And even then it seems to be a fairly even mix of friendly to aggressive players. Stick with it a while and get your sea legs, don't take it personally when you are attacked - they are not targeting you on a personal level but playing a game just like you are. It is called Sea of Thieves.

  • Give your head a shake, pvp is not toxic it's part of the games design. If they are talking mute them.

You wanna see toxic go play cod

If you want more low key game play then like another suggested stay away from server wide events. I do not care to PvP so that is why I never do server wide events anymore. As another suggested steer clear of emissary as well and if you grab a reaper chest that chest puts you on the map for all players to see your location so keep that in mind aswell.

You can use this forum or discord to find others like you who do not have any friends who play this.

As far as players being toxic yes it happens in online games however what you described was not toxic unless maybe leaving some details out.

If you want some game play tips message on here and I will give you some, played this game since day one as both crewed and solo player.

  • @basicdust822138 it's okay when it happens once, or twice I would still be okay if it happend a third time but it seems to me that these [Mod edited] people just wait for you to cash in every single time. I just want to sail around with friends and have fun and "tune up my ship". The pve makes a lot of FUN but I wish that these pvp [Mod edited] be optional.

If I want other toxic af player up play r6 or cod

  • @mk-raw said in Why is this Game so toxic? What to do against it?:

    these[Mod edited] people

You don't like toxic people but it's OK for you to be toxic?

    Consider me confused.

so far your the only one I see being toxic. You are trying to play half the game.

  • @mk-raw Yeah I get that.

  • @BasicDust822138 Please refrain from swearing on our forums, and from circumventing the forum language filter. Both are violations of our forum rules, and your post has been edited accordingly.

  • I didn´t though.

  • This game is basically a tailor-made dream for trolls. I know that's not what Rare intended, but that is the result. That is why you see requests on these forums literally everyday for private servers. Why they don't just release a server install for people to run their own servers is just mind-numblingly nonsensical to everyone except the 12 professional forum users who reply to every post about it and insult anyone who dares to not see the "vision" of the game.

  • What you are describing isn't toxic it's typical pirating in a pirate game

If people say nasty things or harass you verbal/text while pirating mute them or leave the server and try again

It's not fun to be defeated in a game but it's not toxic just because you lost a battle. You win some and you lose some in this game just don't let the losses prevent consistency which will get you the wins.

Oh yes, it is only 12 forum members who are fine with the PvPvE game they bought having PvP in it.

I find that statement mind numbingly nonsensical.

  • @MK-RAW
I feel your pain, I really do. I have felt exactly the same way; at one point I stepped away from SoT for months in a rage-quit of epic proportions (for me anyway, lol).

And I don't have anything against PvE servers, for those that want them. That is my opinion, but please let us not derail this thread into yet another pvp versus pve echo chamber.

Let's talk about the game as it is and how to maximise enjoyment of a game I think is unique and fun. @KommodoreYenser and @COMBATxKITTY have already given some great advice. Here's mine in bullet form:

1: Watch The Horizon Like A Hawk. Enemy ships are usually pretty easy to spot and avoid, or attack if you feel like it.
2: Assume Everyone Is Hostile. Guilty until proven innocent is really the motto of the day on the Sea, I'm afraid.
3: Use The Scuttle Ship Option. If you are getting griefed, don't be afraid to scuttle your ship and start afresh somewhere else. Alternatively, you can server-hop. I know many players will see this as a 'cowardly' way out, but stuff that. If you are being spawn-camped or repeatedly abused by the same pirates, simply leave and find somewhere else to have fun.
4: Never Sail Alone. This game is much, MUCH easier if you play with some else, and there are many groups that actively seek new members and will be happy to have you.
5: Remember - Being Sunk, Killed And Robbed Is Not Toxic. In fact, it is a core game mechanic. Expect to get sunk, killed and robbed often when you first start playing. This game is PvEvP, and you should expect conflict with other players. It is part of the game and part of what adds spice to the PvE.

With a bit of time, practice and some good crewmates, I have found that the PvP aspect of this game is part of what makes it so rewarding, and I am primarily a PvE-player. Beating a marauding pirate at their own game is hella fun. Sometimes, if I get targeted while carrying treasure, I like to race to an outpost, turn in all my treasure, then head to the Tavern for a tankard of grog. Sure, most of the time the marauders will sink my ship, kill me and sometimes go digging for salt. But occasionally, the other crew will join me for a drink and that's when this game really shines, for me anyway.

I hope you stick with the game, fair winds to ye!

  • @mk-raw

I know what you mean. Sometime ago I was tuccing on these guy doing the Ashen Lord, old horatio, and when they finished the ashen lord they started fighting back when I was stealing their loot. These guys just didn't want me and my friends to have their loot, and they started shooting us back and swording us in the face instead of just giving up and letting us take the loot that they spent around 3 hours trying to get. (they spent a LONG time on the ashen lord, 3 hours. WOW!) I definitely agree, this game is SUPER toxic, I think they should remove swords and guns from the game, that way next time I want to steal loot from somebody, they can't fight back.

Honestly, the whole ordeal was really annoying. These guys just didn't want to give up their loot, IDK why. I spent a good 3 hours tuccing on them and they had no idea. One of their names was MK- something or other, I forget what their name was. Anyways, I agree, that PvErs and people who do ashen lords and voyages are SUPER toxic and need to be banned.

Watch your horizons and stop getting ambushed. You have a crow's nest and a spyglass for a reason.

3 hours of Farming gone, and it wasn't the first time.

    And stop being so greedy.

Last month 300,000+ pirates competed for Gold Hoarder emissary rank. I didn't see 299,988 pleas for private servers.

  • @mk-raw

Sell more often, because you have to beware that the sea is full of thieves. As one should never sit on a pile of treasure if they are unwilling to lose it, nothing is safe till it is sold.

Maybe consider not going to the marked spot on the world calling to all those people that enjoy treasure and a fight?

Watch the horizon so you can see those pesky Thieves who are out to plunder and steal so you can sail away in time?

You know, learn the basic pirating skills.

  • personally whenever I see a ship I ask Friend or Foe and 80% of the time they are frindly, But I do understand what your talking about. This happened often times to me as well when I started playing, its sad but often times people will pick on new players which is not good for the reputation of the game, however as I have played more and more I find this to happen a lot less often

  • @mk-raw this is why I wish there'd make a easy to play solo. I know I'm going to be hated for saying it bit I don't really care anymore. I know rare wants the game a certain way and that's fine. If the game was just too bring in PvP players it would be another PvP game not its it's not its completely different. I really think taste wanted a game that a lot of different type of people could play but it hasn't happened yet. I hope rare does do something for people that just want the PvE. Just try to cash in before moving onto the next thing that's all you can really do.

  • @the-blessed1546 sagte in Why is this Game so toxic? What to do against it?:

I hope rare does do something for people that just want the PvE.

They do...all the time...we got so much more PvE stuff to do...we get treasure almost everywhere, even in floating barrels is really good stuff in it...with this no PvEer should be afraid anymore to lose all, because around the next corner is already plenty of stuff waiting for you...
I hate it also to be attacked and robbed, but if it happens, all I can say is, they deserved it, because it's not easy to steal from me...
Later I don't care at all anymore, because there's always more...and it get's more and more almost every update

  • @rowge-gaming I saw all these Posts. Very sad that Rare and Microsoft Game Studios aren't able to set this up. I think a lot of people would play this title if you got the possibility to switch off pvp. But I guess Rare and Msg are just like EA. Killing every good game with stupid mechanics

  • @thekingjojo898 im sorry but I learned it different. Nearly all of the other boats attacked us, and we was doing "our" thing without any aggressive behavior. That's pretty frustrating if you are new to the game

  • @mk-raw sagte in Why is this Game so toxic? What to do against it?:

SoT didn't change to this...it ALWAYS WAS LIKE THIS and also advertised as this...so if you don't like PvP and buy SoT anyway it's your own fault

  • @dlchief58 thanks for the tips. I'm just telling the story from a newbie perspective. It was really frustrating.

  • @schwammlgott looks like you one of these fheads that chill the hole day at the cash in spots. No this was never advertised and this trashcan of game never tells you about this risk in the toturial. I hope your sleeves gets wet next time you wash your hands.

  • I wonder if the forums of rust have people complaining about pvp too..

I'm mostly a PvE player and I run most times if someone is able to come near...so much for that thing

Don't know where you got this from, but it was always advertised this way...look into the description of the game "...shared world...everybody can be friend or foe..."
If you don't understand what that means it's your problem

  • @kommodoreyenser thanks for the info. Stupid games doesn't tell you this

  • @mk-raw sagte in Why is this Game so toxic? What to do against it?:

@kommodoreyenser thanks for the info. Stupid games doesn't tell you this

Kids these days need a tutorial for every single thing...guess what, this game is out over 2,5 years...the maiden voyage got added last year in december, so less than a year old...we day1 players had to find everything out on our own and that's a good thing!
Games tell too much these days, go find it out by yourself or watch some YT videos...there are plenty of them

  • @d3adst1ck while saling OK, but waiting at the cash in locations?

  • @mk-raw said in Why is this Game so toxic? What to do against it?:

The game doesn't have to tell you to exercise basic common sense.
