Did the megs change?

  • Yesterday I had 2 megs spawning on me and they were acting...different...not just circling around the ship, they came closer, attacked from far away and from really close, so you couldn't react to shoot...did they change something there? Don't get me wrong, this unpredictable moving can stay that way, makes them more exciting...I'm just wondering if anyone else experienced this?

only had one and he circled/ attacked us in a different angle, so we couldn't shoot at him, when he bites, also he dived below the ship more times.
Dont know if it was buggy or intended.
Whatever it is, it is different and that is good :D

    Good luck hunting

  • Interesting you should ask the question, because I had the same thing happen to me tonight.

My first meg was pretty normal, but the second did a lot of close-in runs. I'll add the caveat that my second meg didn't have any music, so it might have been bugged out a little.

I enjoyed the more erratic behavior of the 2nd encounter.

  • So if it's bugged, hopefully @Rare-Community-Managers keep it in the game...this unpredictable movement is excellent, makes the meg much less boring

  • Killed a meg yesterday with only 10 cannons and some sniper shots peppered in solo... seemed too easy. THEN it goes and spawns about half a fort’s worth of loot including a bone dust and stronghold chest...the seas sure have gotten way friendly in the last few months.

Almost every meg I kill drops a stronghold item, once I killed the ancient terror and it dropped ALL 3 STRONGHOLD ITEMS!!! That was amazing

Lol that’s the one I got. Wonder if they increased the loot value on the rarer megs... shame I will never know about the shrouded ghost loot. Sigh

Probably 2 foul skulls and a seafarer chest...🤣

  • @schwammlgott hell I would just be happy to nab one, forget the loot! (Helps to say that when you are already maxed though haha)

  • Megs' pathing has been acting up for some time now. Probably like a patch or 2 ago.

  • The newly bugged pathing certainly is interesting, but I don't like it, and hope it gets fixed, specifically because of how you can't effectively react to the meg when it goes under your boat and gets a free bite out of your ship. That's not balanced at all - it's a cheap shot.

It's actually a good thing, makes it upredictable and exciting...it has nothing to do with balance

Everything you said is wrong. You can't learn from unpredictability, therefore you can't consistently have fun. Furthermore, as a video game, everything has to do with balance. Saying otherwise is a non-starter.

As soon as you learn how to beat em, it gets boringly easy...making it unpredictable makes it more exciting...so what's the problem with it? Now it can be a thread, not anymore that super ridiculous easy beast that just circles around you

  • @galactic-geek I like it this way. You never know where or when its going to attack. The old way was easy...shoot left, snipe back, shoot right, snipe front, fix when needed.

  • @schwammlgott shrouded ghost loot is no different to the loot for any other Meg IIRC. I've only fought and defeated it once, and it appeared to drop the same things as the other Megs.

  • @schwammlgott They did tinker with its AI in the last patch.

    From the release notes:

"Megalodons and sharks should no longer crash into sea rocks, islands and ships when chasing their target."

I noticed the Meg no longer swims around my ship in predictable circles. It seems to vary its distance from my ship more frequently. However, when it attacks it sometimes leaves no damage, and sometimes swims right through my ship.

That was a joke...I know it doesn't matter what meg you kill, it's always rng

  • I had one meg act like that, it was the hungering one, it acted the exact same way.

Change is good, but only when it's a transition from 1 expectation to another. If it's random and unexpected, it's usually not a good thing.

  • They became a buggy mess

  • Damn finally. The first time ive seen one I thought they really need a revamp. I hope they eat people in the water too...
Megalodon were bloody boring puppets, hope now they are dangerous as they had to be.

Might check it out, got tired of the game lately of boringness

  • @schwammlgott the funniest thing me and my crew had happen last week was that a meg popped up just outside of ancient spire which we where going to to sell some stuff.

However instead of the usual swimming away when close to an island it kept following us, better yet it pushed us (swimming right behind our galleon Nose touching stern)

We had a good laugh but continued to dock at ancient, then it flew over our ship only to land right next to it and now was trying to push us from the broadside....

And it just kept splashing around there, we killed it with swords and guns, not a single cannonball was fired, pretty handy the loot so close to the outpost though :-p

  • @callmebackdraft something like that happened already before the update...half a year ago, we killed a meg with our swords as well...stuck on the back of our ship on crooked masts

  • Yeah mine were doing like sneak attacks. No audio for bites. Disappearing underwater and biting. very odd
