whats the point in buying ancient coins

  • if rare just decides to hand them out for doing something as simple as fish the most common fish in the game?

that just makes everything i bought just seem like wasted money

i honestly don't think these events that pay ancient coins should even be a thing

give people some other currency with all these ancient coins im being awarded for free be it ancient skeleton or event theres really no point in spending anymore money since its all just being handed out

just a week ago under a 2 day span i found 3 of those skeletons

almost allowing me to buy some of the more expensive ship sets in the store

this is why the economy in this game is broken

you keep handing out things for free and make things worth more than they should theres very little effort or time put into actually earning any of it

one of my friends started 2 weeks ago hes almost got 3 mil in his pocket
sure hes been playing with day one legends but still

  • The point of buying Ancient Coins using real cash is to support the studio; spending more money on the game outside of the initial purchase is to help keep future updates free, and to keep the servers running.

Also, your anecdotes are quite interesting. First, you encountered three Ancient Skeletons in the span of two days. I'd say you got extraordinarily lucky.

Second, you said your friend just started playing and almost has three million gold, but that he almost solely plays with Pirate Legends. Athena's Voyages are very lucrative in terms of their final payout; if he hasn't been buying any cosmetics it makes perfect sense that he'd reach three million gold by doing nothing but ride the coattails of more successful and skilled pirates.

  • @jollyolsteamed euhm, you have to catch 300! Of one specific fish to obtain a mere 150 ancient coins, thats hours of work to get 1.5 dollars worth of AC

I have both purchased AC and obtained them via ancient skellys and i genuinly couldnt care less

this has nothing to do with anything i brought up

people don't buy things to support anything

thats not how items of value or interest works

people buy things out of their own interest seeing an item they think looks good or seems like a fun mechanic or gimick to use

its basically just the same as buying this game nobody buys it for the sole reason to just support the devs

its a purchase not a charity

besides if the purchases are to keep updates free it doesn't make sense to hand out ancient coins

but more or less buying ancient coins to support the devs is more like a side effect

    for example take gofundme pages

people make donations to these to save lives or otherwise make life for others easier

yes but it also self empowers the donator with the feeling of being charitable a trait that makes one feel good about themselves this is within their own interest

the charitable trait is also a very egoistical trait

Also, your anecdotes are quite interesting. First, you encountered three Ancient Skeletons in the span of two days. I'd say you got extraordinarily lucky.

even if i was lucky i don't think this is how it should work

nonetheless however rare it is to happen upon these encounters

something you pay for with extra real life money should not be handed out to people

it just counters the purpose of actually buying anything

also makes the things you bought from the store seem like a waste of money because you could have just waited instead of spending something around 40-80 bucks worth of pets cosmetics and ship sets

had i known with a little bit of patience all those ancient coins would just be handed out as if i was a beggar i wouldn't have spent money in the first place

    i am very patient

yes it was a poor arguement

but nonetheless getting money even as a starter isn't hard at all

which is why this economy in this game is broken and not balanced not in the slightest

when i first started this game

it would take you a whole play session to unlock one cosmetic

not so much anymore as everything is just handed out to you because people are too lazy to actually put in some work for it

im detesting the way this ship is currently sterring call it a mutiny by unpopular reasons

i disagree with this and i will stand for that

  • It sounds like you're really not interested in having a reasonable discussion. I told you the reason buying Ancient Coins exists, and you're trying to turn it into a bigger argument.

This is where I drop anchor. You say it's a "mutiny," when you're the only one raising your voice. Best walk the plank and be done with it now, matey.

  • @jollyolsteamed
    1 Ruby Splashtail = about 3 minutes each = 20 fish per hour .... 300 / 20 = 15 hours 🤷🏻‍♂️

Overpayed event? Really? 300(!!) Ruby splashtails for 150 ancient coins is ridiculous, thats less than 2 Euro and you have to work for hours to get that...
Also the possibility to get ancient coins without paying real money was already before this event in the game...ancient skellies, so why make a thread now with this event and not long before because of these skellies?

By the way, I won't go for these 300 fishes...it's really not worthit at all

Wow, you really got ridiculous issues with Rare handing over less than 2 Euro to people...think of this again and stop overreacting that much for something like that... 🤦🏻‍♂️

  • @jollyolsteamed also, there is a really good point in giving away a few coins...guess how many people think "ohh, i got now 150 coins, but that thing I want costs a bit more...f*** it, I'll just buy a few coins to get that"
So that's how strategy works...give them a little, so they are more willing to spend a little money on it...same as coupons, or "take 2 and buy it for less"-offers in regular shops...

  • it really comes down to what your time is worth to you. im not going to bother with the 300 fish, cos i can 'earn' 150 ancient coins in about 2 minutes irl.
i reckon the event is intended for people that cant buy ancient coins for some reason or another. either they are too young, or dont have a credit card, etc. i dont have any problem with rare having an option for those people to grind a couple hours for a handful of coins to buy an appearance potion or whatnot.

  • @callmebackdraft 1.5$ is a steal!
At this worth you can buy a sneakers bar!

@JollyOlsteamed Speak for yourself ive bought things to support Rare even before the Emporium shop like the exclusive limited controller pre ordered the game all the books and comics and even the board game.
Ive got something in return but it was a way to support the game and now we have the Emporium shop and yes many people would buy things just becuase they want it but many chose to support Sea of Thieves by buying things.
And they give us a handful amount of coins when we kill very rare skeleton or the new torture of catching freaking 300 rubies!
And for this torture we get a 1.5$?!
I think that its fair and even with that many people buy from the Emporium shop.

Actually I disagree with you here. In most cases I would. However, when this event was announced (ruby splashtail for 150 coins) it was said in that announcement that those coins are just enough to buy the ruby splashtail fishing rod. It is my understanding that that was the intent for this event. 300 splashtails for enough coins to buy the ruby splashtail fishing rod. I genuinely don't believe there is anything more to it.

Sure some people will save that 150 and some people wont bother because is such a low amount but I am glad to see them introducing it in other places.

It says it's enough for that, yes...but that's just an example to make it tasty for people (hope this is the right term for that, translated from german)
If you know how advertising works this would be logical...

the amount isn't the issue at all

events that pay AC should not exist

whos to say we will get more of these events slowly going from 1.5$ to more and more and more

it counters the idea of having a microtransaction shop

and im sure there are a few people who buys to support but i'd argue those numbers are few inbetween

now i bet theres going to be the people who will say they did buy to support just to counter the claims

but i stand for what i think and i disagree and you disagree with me thats fine

  • If anything, the requirement for this event prompted me to just ignore it and buy the coins directly. Also I think what you're saying doesn't make much sense, but hey, everyone can have an opinion.

  • I have gotten so much fun out of this game, and im still playing it with friends every now and then. Lately it has been a little more.

That being said, i have bought ancient coins, naturally to get some neat stuff, BUT also to support Rare, so that they can continue to build on the SoT world and lore of the game.
Im not a "whale", but i do like to buy all kinds of game merchandise like statues and such, and really the ancient coins are not that big of a deal. Especially as you can get them in the game, and also through events. They dont really hurt anyone, as they do not give you any advantage or prevent you from playing the game.

Just my couple of cents on the matter,
    Ghostfire

  • @schwammlgott I run my own business I understand how it works perfectly. They put that event out with the intention that people would buy the rod with those coins.

From a business perspective they are hoping people will just buy coins because they make more of a profit because of it.

I do not mind that there are ways to get free ancient coins. I just buy them because id rather do that than fish (which I suck at) or hope for an ancient skelly to pop up. More of a convenience thing for me.

    completly understandable

also proving the fact that purchasing AC to support this game is a side note and not the main reason for it

but no matter the fact that they don't give you any advantages

money spent is still money spent

it would still irk me over the fact that the money i had spent could have just stayed in my pocket if i knew they'd just hand it out for free for a mere couple of ingame leisure hours

indeed everyone is allowed an opinion even you (even if it be disagreeing with me and i respect your opinion no matter what your opinion is everyone is entitled to one)

but i was merely remarking the fact if rare is going to make these events to hand out AC theres really no point in spending any cash in the microtransaction shop

    all one requires is patience

  • Ultimately it's not our place to tell you how to spend your money.
You should absolutely feel free to buy - or not buy - any cosmetics and pets you desire by way of ancient skeletons and timed events!
    Happy fishing! 🎣

  • @jollyolsteamed the point is that those who have the patience to grind for premium currencies are willing to do so because they're not going to spend any cash anyway. It's the same strategy used by f2p games: entice the player with premium rewards that are easily obtainable with money, but very difficult to reach by just playing. It's actually a tried and true business model that makes the fortune of many a mobile game. Also, like others pointed out, obtaining free coins and being juuust short of the coins required to buy what you wish is an incentive to actually buy the coins you're missing with real money.
I suggest you watch a few Youtube videos about these money-making models and the so-called "whales", they're very interesting. It's something I absolutely despise, mind you, as it takes advantage of vulnerable people, but at least I think Sea of Thieves does it in a way more honest and affordable way.
