Bait Rework - more specific fishing

  • I really enjoy fishing in Sea of Thieves. It's rather simple and straightforward. However, looking for a certain type of fish can prove frustrating when more than one type share the same bait.
Let me say that, while this is a really minor complaint, I feel like a small change can improve fishing while being more thematically appropriate (you'll se what I mean).
Let's say I'm currently in the Ancient Isles, during a storm, looking for Stormfish. I cast my rod, leeches attached, and three to four times I get an Ancientscale. Boring, right? And now the storm has moved away from my ship and I have to relocate.
As a refresher, these are the types of fish you can get with the three types of bait:

    • Grubs: Devilfish - Battlegill

    • Leeches: Ancientscale - Stormfish

    • Earthworms: Plentifin - Wildsplash - Wrecker
The change I suggest is pretty simple, as it requires to swap the bait requirement of just three types, so that their spawn conditions don't overlap anymore.
Since the other two regional types require the same bait, I consider Earthworms to be more appropriate for Ancientscales. This way they can no longer appear when looking for Stormfishes.
Replacing Ancientscales, Devilfishes could be caught using Leeches, since storms don't appear in the Devil's Roar.
Finally, Wreckers should require Grubs, since they're kind of similar to Battlegills as they're both attracted to destruction and mayhem, although in different environments.
      To sum it up:

    • Devilfish: Leeches

    • Ancientscale: Earthworms

    • Wreckers: Grubs
Fish that can be caught with no bait/any bait doesn't factor in this equation, since it's kind of a random fish that is always around.
This way, you have a neat fish/bait table with no more than one fish requiring specific bait in specific locations, for the joy of all us fishing (and OCD suffering) enthusiasts.
Since this is really a small change on such a minor detail I doubt my suggestion will be taken into consideration, but I still wanted to share it with you guys, and I sincerely think it would make fishing more immersive.

  • @bobbcane This seems like a lot of work and unnecessary confusion when you can just look at the fish and pull up your rod if it isn’t the fish you want.

  • Well, it's not such a lot of work, and it's not confusing at all. It would be simply a matter of changing some text and a few lines. While I agree that this is a minor detail and a rather insignificant point, it does remove a little bit of unnecessary tedium while keeping things more thematically appropriate (it really bugs me that Ancientscales don't share the same bait as the other regional types and can be found alongside Stormfishes, when they have absolutely nothing in common).
Of course I don't expect Rare to do something like this, unless they overhaul the whole fishing system and decide to adjust bait in a similar way.
