A complete essay on fishing in sea of thieves

  • Ok, so I really like the fishing feature introduced in the anniversary update. It's without a doubt, one of my favorite part of the game. I love the feeling a sailing around catching fishes. But there is one or two issues that I need to adress.

First things first, the most part of fishing is on point. I don't have any problems with the splahtails, islehoppers, ancientscales, plentyfins, wildsplashes, battlegills and stormfish. I also think that selling 50 times each regular fishes and 10 times each legendary fishes is a good number in order to become a legendary hunter. I also have to warn you that my native language is french, so I may do some grammar mistakes. That being said let's get to the major issues.

    The Baits :
There is a huge problem with baits. At first they were very rare and it was very tedious to fish because you only found them in barrels. But Rare fixed that and let you dig the ground to get baits. It's a wonderful idea. Each baits are on speficic parts of the island. Leeches near the sea, Grubs in the sand, and Earthworms in the ground. But the problem is that it's very difficult to have earthworms. 7 out of 10 times, if you dig in a patch of grass, you will get grubs because the game considers that you dug sand. Even I you dug in the middle of a big patch of grass. It's very frustrating, because I don't think that it was intended.

    The Blackcloud Wrecker:
This fish is very weird. All of the other fish in sea of thieves have no conditions (Splashtails), or one conditions that you need to respect in order to catch them (Wildsplashes in the Wilds for example). But this little guy have two conditions. You need to fish near a Shipwreck and under the storm. It's very confusing, because it's the only one that needs 2 conditions for its spawning, and apart from its name you don't have any clues on how to fish it. In English it's more obvious but in french it's called "Naufrageur des cieux funestes" roughly "Wrecker of the sinister skies" which is more ambiguous. In order to fix it you can either delete the storm condition for this particular fish, or give clearer informations to the player, because If you have to go to the wiki to understand how to catch a fish then I think that there is a problem. Why not let the hunters of the seaposts tell you that this fish is special ? There is already a small box of text that gives tips on fishing, but right now it's completely useless. Which leads to my next point.

The Hunters on the Seaposts :
The Hunter on the seaposts are completely useless. They're only usefull when you have to sell fishes and when you want to buy the pieces of the Killer Whales set. The other factions give you quests, but they don't. I understand that it's difficult to create a type of quest for the Hunter's Call, but I think that it's still possible to create some kinds of fetch quests where the hunters ask you to find peculiar types of fishes in exchange for more gols and reputation.

    The Devilfishes :
The devilfishes are fished in the devil's roar. Why are they sold for the same price as the Plentyfins ? Devilfishes have to be sold for more gold, like the ashen chests, and the ashen skulls, because it's more difficult to get them. Maybe not as much as the wreckers and the battlegills, but definitly more than the plentyfins, the wildsplashes and the ancientscales.

    The storm :
It's very difficult to know where the storm is going when you want to fish stormfishes. I think that it would be a good idea to make some kind of visual cue to let the player know where the storm is heading. Not an obvious one, but maybe something that's hard to tell, something discreet.

    Hunter's call gears :
Finally, I have a problem with the Hunter's Call rewards. Apart from the Killer Whale set there is no reward for the Hunter's Call, no cosmetics in the shops, and no doubloons for the commendations. I mean, I think that it's kind of weird that completing the Legendary hunter of the Sea of thieves commendation doesn't give you any doubloons. It just gives you a title which is pretty cool, but considering that it may be one of the most tedious commendation of the game, not having any other rewards is very disappointing. It could be cool if you could unlock a peculiar set of cosmetic with the "Master hunter" commendation or the "Legendary Hunter" commendation.

Well that concludes my feedback. Keep in mind that I really love fishing even though I have my problems with it. I think that it's the most fun part of the game. If I have any other thoughts I will post them as comments in this entry.

    The Bait

I think that's just an issue with the grass being layered over the sand. If you go to a big island and dig further up and away from the beach, it should go better for you.

    The Blackcloud Wrecker

I can see that the translations may cause a problem for this, and agree that the tip boxes should tell you of them. However, you don't need to search a wiki - that kind of knowledge spreads by players. For instance, few people know that the orange crystals on volcanoes light up as it gets closer to eruption, and it spreads by people who do know telling others.

    Hunter's Call Quests

The Hunter's Call was designed to not need quests, but to be something that you can do freely in whatever way you wish. You can find fish passively in barrel patches and rowboats, actually fish for them, search wrecks for them, steal them from skeleton and player ships alike, etc.

    Devilfish Value

I agree that they should have double value, as all Devil's Roar items do. That said, the Devil's Roar as a whole needs a revamp.

    Storm Movements

You can track the storm's movements by just watching it. It bounces around like a pinball, only changing direction at the edges of the map most of the time.

    Hunter's Call Rewards

More cosmetics would always be nice, but the Hunter's Call is a family owned and run company - it doesn't have the kinds of connections required for ordering tons of cosmetics. Different sets for different commendations would be nice, though. As for the commendations, they are like all faction commendations, and give reputation instead of doubloons. Only Bilge Rat commendations award doubloons.

  • A Hunters voyage with rate fish spawning at a certain map co-ordinate would be very easy indeed to implement. Would be a nice way to rank up HC rep without relying on RNG

  • I enjoyed reading this post.

I, myself, am not a fisherman, although I certainly did my share of it when it was first introduced....but I appreciate that there are different ways to enjoy the seas....it make the experience more immersive for me...

I like the fact that you've obviously given a lot of thought to this aspect of the game, and your ideas seem reasonable and worthwhile....

Hopefully some of this will be considered by the devs....

I just wish there were bait boxes and trophy fish crates that I could steal from you......

(sorry, can't help it - I'm a pirate by nature, and I NEED your fish lol)

  • @poslio

Fish and bait can be stored in storage crates, and you can consider it an extra challenge to sneak aboard someone's ship and gather their fish (and probably other resources) as well.

  • @ultmateragnarok

That's true enough - and occasionally I am surprised to find someone storing fish like that....

It's always exciting to run across a 'fish stash' (since I don't fish myself)....

I guess I'm thinking more of a dedicated crate for fish (like cannonball or fruit crates) that we can easily identify and target when we're in a hurry....

Maybe they could even have a 'splashtail crate' or something similar that fishers can fill and sell for more gold at the seaposts.....

To be honest, I'm just trying to figure out a way to steal more fish!

  • I always assumed that the storm moved in the direction of the wind...

  • @poslio
Perhaps Merrick could connect with the Merchant Alliance and a bait crate could be made. A fish-specific one could also be made, able to be sold to either faction when full. Selling it to the Hunter's Call would give more reputation and gold but none of the commendations for the fish within.

    @Galactic-Geek
It doesn't stay with the wind, but I believe the storm will bounce with the wind once it decides to change direction. If that leads it out of the map, it seems to force the wind to turn.

    I like this alot.

I'm thinking maybe double gold/no rep for full fish crates, tho - for players like OP who deserve a reason to keep fishing, beyond level 50 and the commendations....?

I definitely think the Hunter's Call alliance should continue to expand it's features for the players that enjoy this part of the game, while incorporating their activities into the interests of pirates like myself....

  • @poslio

Double gold and no rep seems a fair trade for this, they get no guarantee as to what fish it is, but they get to achieve their goal better - feeding the people of the Sea of Thieves. I would say perhaps at max level everything should give more gold, but that wouldn't work for crews and would negate several other things.

  • @ultmateragnarok
The bait crate is a nice idea but the problem is that you can easily farm them.

  • @ultmateragnarok
Thank you for taking the time to respond to my post. I didn't know that the bilge rats commendations were the only ones to give doubloons.

  • @bamboumlasertag

I can see how the bait crates would be farmable, but you can also farm the other crates if you just go between barrels on islands, or in the sea, or on shipwrecks. The bait can be obtained in the same way, or by digging, which is arguably more tedious. You can find sometimes 15 or so bait in a single barrel, but you're not guaranteed to get bait when you dig.

As for the commendations, all factions actually have them, they've always been there. They're normally graded commendations, where you complete the same task in increasingly large numbers and get rewarded more each time, as opposed to the Bilge Rat's one-time completions.

  • I wish the fishing mechanic was better. It's the most unfun fishing mechanic in a game i've played with fishing. Who thought that this nonsensical design was a good idea?

  • @bamboumlasertag personally I'd like to see some more "hunting" aspects.

    1. Selling animal crates to the Hunters Call at any given time, much like the meat system to avoid quests.

    2. Bigger, angrier animals randomly appear on the islands;
-Big pigs charge you with its ivory tusks,
-Snakes grab you similar to the kraken but less like a hoover,

    • Angry Chickens peck you or something idk
    1. Jelifish, (I purposely mispelt it as it has been a "banned" word since I first thought of this, perhaps the despite are already ahead) a large swarm rises up from the deep ocean for a limited time before returning to the depths. In this time players could collect them using a net of sorts like an episode of spongebob.

Swimming in this water is a sure way for a quick trip to the ferry man as these colourful little creatures pack quite the sting on them.

Or a friendly sea horse version

    1. Manta rays, swordfish, basking shark and other monstrous wonders of the sea either naturally spawning in the vast ocean hunting for food or a legendary catch on the fishing rod.

    2. A small shark addition adding hammerheads and or other dangers to the swimming player like pirahannas in shallow waters.
