Changing Pirate Appearance

  • Hello Everybody
When it was revealed in the crews of rage trailer I was really excited to see the pirate appearance potion make its way to the emporium, I've been using the same pirate since launch and I would like to stare at something different. However, upon using the potion it reminded me just how flawed the pirate randomizer is, I did probably about 50 rerolls to find nothing that I was satisfied with In a game all about the customization I want to have a pirate that looks like what I envision.

Anyways so I am suggesting 2 things. First the obvious one... Just add character customization once you hit PL! However, I don't know how hard this would be to implement so I have a better idea.
This idea makes much more sense to me, upon consuming a pirate appearance potion allow the player to choose specific categories of what pirate they want, what I mean by this is allowing the player BEFORE rerolling pirates can choose if they want a Female/Male, Young/Old/, Fat/Buff/Neutral, etc Type of pirate. I think this would be a much better solution than just adding player customization because Rare would still make a profit from the potion.

This is something that doesn't matter to a lot of people but I know there are people like me that really care about Pirate appearance in SoT.

The IPG is intended to force imperfections onto your pirate. Direct control over customization would remove that - creating the 'ideal' pirate, be it stolen from a book/movie or some original concept, is not what Rare wants. I could see gender and body type being lockable, if requested enough, but it does allow bypassing of the imperfections. You're meant to connect to your pirate, too, so changing it at a milestone like Pirate Legend makes no sense.

I wholeheartedly agree that a filter for the Infamous Pirate Generator (IPG); or even better a character creation menu, is a much needed addition to Sea of Thieves. It's unfortunate though that despite this suggestion constantly popping up over the past two years, RARE just doesn't seem to care about the player characters in general at all.

    @UltmateRagnarok

So I'm meant to 'connect' with my pirate during the duration of playing this game? If that's the case then wouldn't it make more sense to grant the player the ability to actually customize their pirate to a greater degree than simply forcing them to pick a random one? At least for me personally I would be much more attached to an 'ideal' character I spent the time and effort in creating as opposed to the 'imperfect' randomly generated one I'm forced to pick because I'm tired of re-rolling the character lottery trying to get the one true pirate I actually want.

Ideally you'd end up growing connected through your experiences while with that character, rather than entirely off of pre-conceived notions, but not everyone lets themselves do that.

  • @cptmorganz my pirate is an ugly mug that cannot fit in any darn hat he puts on and there for i am known as jolly the hatless pirate and this is not a name i have given myself my crew and friends alike call my pirate this now i interduce myself as this name in game i mean kraken hat sovereign hat crab hat hell not even the ghost hat i spent ages grinding to get i don't fit into that either i really agree with @UltmateRagnarok you do get connected with your pirate once you find your pirates charm

  • The only thing I don’t like about my pirate is he looks like he forgot leg day. Which I couldn’t tell due to his pants when I first did the IPG for almost two hours at launch. Now his legs in certain pants look like chicken legs.

I haven’t bought the potion because I’ve shared to many tales with the fellow to just discard him. To bad the potion wouldn’t let you adjust the body size or muscle build without changing the face.

    Basically a paid pirate diet.

    Just my thoughts.

You could do what I do for that - wear a jacket. People always are complaining about large pirates not fitting into things, but the more rare jackets are actually closed and work quite well. The Fearless Bone Crusher one is good for it if you don't have the ones from the Bone Crusher or Wailing Barnacle sets. With the jacket of the Wailing Barnacle and the hat/hook to match, my pirate is quite recognizable to those who know him, and the face is one I've grown to like. For yours in particular, if you don't like that the legs are so thin, you could wear pants similar in shape to those you originally saw.

  • @ultmateragnarok yeah I have the bone crusher and wailing sets. I do usually wear a coat but the legs look like kickstands haha.

Executive Admiral pants are nice and puffy! 👍 my go to.

  • I got lucky. My pirate is PERFECT.

    Well said

Character appearance is not and should not be a readily customizable feature. We're meant to pick a Pirate at the beginning, and that Pirate is meant to be our identity in the Sea of Thieves. Your Pirate is who you are in the world.

I believe that this is Rare's logic, too. As is evident by the fact that the Pirate Appearance Potion has only just been added to the game after nearly two years. They were reluctant to add this feature I believe.

The way they have added it is perfect - it costs the player their real life hard earned dollars. Why? Because you're literally changing your visual identity that was meant to stick with you for your entire pirate life on the Sea of Thieves.

The decision to change your character should be momentous and costly, and the ancient coin cost should be there to deter players from doing it often, or maybe even to get the player to wonder if they really need that character reroll as much as they thought they did!

I would say the opposite. It is because Rare cares about the look of the game that they created the IPG.
Its easy to do what has already been done, Rare wanted to get players out of a comfort zone.
No matter how common or unique a character in game looks, they all look wonky and crazy enough to belong in the SoT as pirates.

So I'm meant to 'connect' with my pirate during the duration of playing this game? If that's the case then wouldn't it make more sense to grant the player the ability to actually customize their pirate to a greater degree than simply forcing them to pick a random one?

I think the intent is to choose a character that resonates with the player. For whatever reason, and that choice may be different from your original intention.
I cant stand more than twenty minutes staring at pirates, if nothing truly unique appears in that time, I'll just come back later.
It is entirely likely I'll have to sack a pirate after seeing how he looks in game for the first time, since the IPG wont let me zoom in or rotate around pirates in that tavern.

In short, you don't get to play God, you have to interview actors for a role.
