Messenger Birds & Marked Ships

  • Idea for Implementation to Game :

    Messenger Birds :
-Ability to Wright notes from Captains Chair/Mission Desk
-Ability to give notes to bird on "railing" to deliver to allied ships

    Marked Ships :
-Implements a new system where particular violent crews can be marked and seen on the ocean map to all much like the reapers mark.
-Requirements to be marked could be such as sinking a ship that has never fired upon you/ landed a shot.

    Personal Opinion :
Especially with the addition of the Arena giving PVP'ers an outlet to play more competitively I feel their is a need to make the game more enjoyable to more passive play styles like that of merchants ect..
I do not know how without the game loosing its hard core appeal though I feel their is less and less player interaction and little trust resulting in very merciless seas.

  • @dworvin-vonst the marked ships idea is something i wanted since i first started playing. it would make things way riskier and fun, especially if you could retaliate and chase down the ship that just sank you. the messenger bird is beyond brilliant, but alliances are rare from my experiences, so a pretty sophisticated mechanic might not see the light of day, considering how little people would use it.

  • WE don't sink ships. WATER, however, does.

  • Thank you for the Feedback to my Pole it is nice to see My ideas get some attention.

The "Red Player" or "Pk-er" is something you see often in RPG's that have a PVP aspect to them as well as fantasized in Shows featuring RPG Games, one so that comes to mind is Sword Art Online with the Laughing coffin guild's intro scene.

I personally think that such a feature for Marking violent players in a way is a win win since it give them more action; it would be very exciting to see a new mechanic down the line come to fruition as a reply to this, being a bounty hunter system that would reward players taking out such villains and cashing in some type of trinket acquired from sinking Marked/Wanted Ships.

I do agree with you that it may be a complicated addition to the game in terms of animating a bird and creating the model for it; otherwise I would imagine it simple to simply wright a message which is already a feature and have it pinged over to crews with the same ally key as yours.
Though with such a system I would imagine alliances becoming more popular since communication will allow you to call for help or coordinate attacks and or progress like collecting flame colors.

Thank you again for the reply. Perhaps with more attention I will add some art to show off how the idea would look in game.

If a player wants more action like that, they can use the Reaper's Mark. Systems which try to detect who sunk a ship don't work, however, as oftentimes there are too many factors in play to truly decide who is responsible. It's possible it might even be a joint effort between multiple crews and PvE threats, even if those forces then turn on each other. Additionally, systems like that would have trouble determining who started the battle. A ship can be on approach for a ram with a player holding a keg on their bow, and have that keg be shot followed by a cannon barrage to finish them off. The game would then likely punish the defenders rather than the aggressors for the fight.

The alliance communication mechanic is a good idea, though.

  • @ultmateragnarok

That is a very good point actually Ragnarok; I really do not know how the system would Mark such players either, its not as cut and dry as an RPG would function.

Though I did get another idea from Reading your message and it would have a similar result, though at the same time be more immersive and versatile.
The new idea could be that instead Marked players could be marked buy players themselves through a bounty hunting guild and players would have to supply the reward money themselves buy bringing chests to the guild and cashing them in for credits they could later spend to mark ships; A physical compass could be awarded to bounty hunters taking the job which instead of marking Marked players on the map. Those with a compass could track them down for bounty hunting reputation, reward money and in turn this would add new feature to the game.

  • @dworvin-vonst The problem with allowing players to mark other players is that it's way too easy to exploit.

    ex:
Someone sees you on the ferry of the damned and identifies you as a member of a crew they are fighting, even though you aren't. They put a bounty out on you, now the server is hunting you for nothing.

Or they see you on the ferry and just want to troll you, so they mark you and you get hunted by mistake, much to their delight.

Player A and Player B want bounty hunter rep, so they procure 2 ships on the same server and sit at golden sands taking turns marking then killing each other until they are both maxed out.

I'm not exactly against a bounty system, but I have never seen it suggested in a way that prevents exploits and/or trolling...

  • @dworvin-vonst marked ships no we have a reapers flag theres no reason to implement something that would force it on you also being that i could be defending myself from an enemy ship and suddenly get marked for defending several chest of legends or valuable loot

  • Thank you again for the Feedback.

The Marked Players/Ship idea does sound like a dud though I do think the messenger bird would add some good balance to the game. perhaps players will have more interest in joining Alliances knowing they will be able to message each other without having to friend a stranger and message them out of the game.

  • @dworvin-vonst

I also disagree for marking ships or have a PK flag or whatever.
And with all respect and knowing where you are coming from and supporting the idea to have more parlay, more socialisation, less mistrust and sink on sight situations i would rather work on to remove glitches that allow exploits and support gamers who abuse it.
Someone recently said when Rare patched out the DGE several streamers instantly stopped playing, because they introduced it to SoT and made it popular.
When they brought it back the streamer came back to "own" people , be jerkish and start abusing glitches again.
Yeah many like it, like Sex sells, also hate and toxicity sells. Bullying sells very well on Twitch. Look these noobs...
But that's an awful, limited aproach imho.

So in general i'm on your side, i played as a PK in a ffa full loot PvP sandbox game already and i know what i'm talking about, but red flags and such arent the right way to prevent them from being jerks and exploit, instead remove their ability to abuse glitches and they will ragequit.
That's what we need. And i dont care if 5 of the 10 Million leave SoT then.
Better to have less, but playful players than to have double numbers but gamers gaming the system.

  • @bugaboo-bill

I enjoy seeing the more toxic crews rage-quit after sinking once (quite common for the type), while other crews (including myself) don't, coming back a time or two and winning through of tactics and knowledge rather than from a single exploit. Ship combat is mostly exploit-free, and DGE users aren't as well-practiced with that.

  • @ultmateragnarok

Yep exactly, sunk some really toxic crews with my mates and one day they first sunk us, but wer changed to a ship battle tactic not boarding, not let them board, they were the better dg'ers they were faster with the cutlass, but bad at sailing and cannons and the moment we realized that and switch tactic they sunk and drowned with their insults on their lips what got struck in their throats.
