I know a good few people who have been wanting to change the physical appearance of their Pirate since the day the game launched, not realising that it was a one time deal.
It is something that has been requested since year one so is it time for RARE to add a system where you can have a single Token to change your pirate appearance without losing progress but any time after that it will cost you Ancient coins to pay for it?
Rare mentioned this about a year ago in a dev update or behind the scenes clip.
The idea is there be a fountain of youth which u will be able to reach via voyages (maybe like a tall tale) which will give u the abilty to change the way your pirate looks.
My best guess it is coming but we dont know when.
not really, just shy of a couple of months for the two year anniversary and its still not possible change your pirate's appearance without losing progress and creating a new one, I think as its something that has been requested by community since launch that well.

Nope, still doesn't work for me. But I've got some oddly specific hangups, so don't let my opinion bother you. =)
I think it's on their list of things they would like to add to the game but it's not a priority.
Two things they could do in the shorter term that would help are:
add a splash screen to the pirate carousel at the start to explain the importance of choosing your pirate carefully - mentioning the things that can be changed afterwards and those that can't.
When you favourite choices on the carousel, it should give you the option to reroll the others using the same/similar characteristics. So press the normal button for totally random (as-is) but another button could reroll based on favourites.
@cokney-charmer A much requested option largely unaddressed by Rare. I wouldn't expect it anytime soon.

I have already tested this extensively recently and it seems it's not the case, sadly. It may have been just a coincidence in your case.

That's a weird stipulation to me to be honest. I'd be fine with the feature being paid through emporium as many times as someone wanted, I'd just want it to be more feature specific than paying for a whole character reroll

Would be just a good gold sink for those that want an almost new complete character instead of the other eye to be droopy or clear some space for an in-game tattoo.
Also, otherwise you couldn't even recognise your own crew if they change every feature they have :).
