Disgusting players grief my tall tale

  • Just spent hours and hours doing the start thief quest solo, without looking up solutions.

My ship got sunk three times. The first time, some players ran into my boat while I was searching the Island.
They had stolen the star jewel on my boat amongst other chests so when I respawned, I went straight to their location and they were kind enough to give me back the jewel.

I decided to stash the jewels on an Island so I wouldnt have that issue again.

The second time I sunk, It was because of my own dumbassery. I had a keg onboard and it somehow blew up in the middle of the sea, I didnt hit a rock and I wasnt inside a storm. I didnt have enough material to fix my ship so I had to abandon it.

Luckily I had placed my jewels on a rowboat that my boat was carrying, and I was very close to the uncharted Island we have to go to near the end of the tale.
So I was able to make it there with my rowboat.

Once on the island, I started placing the jewels in the eyes of the underground statue. On my way to get my second jewel from the rowboat, I see a brigantine headed my way.
I quickly grab the jewel, stick it in the statue and as soon as I got the totem I hid it somewhere in the cave.
I let the Brigantine crew kill me as I had nothing to lose, in hope that they would leave.

Back on my sloop, I rush to the uncharted Island to finally unlock the vault which was luckily in the very same cave I hid the totem in.
The brigantine was nowhere to be seen.

I drop the anchor at the island and unboard, rush in the cave, get my totem and unlock the vault. The puzzle then starts.
I solve it, get the shroudbreaker piece and then, I turn back, and the door behind me opens up to reveal 2 players from that Brigantine crew, ready to ravage me. They start shooting at me while I desperatly make a run for it while seeing my world crumble.
I really feel like it was a gigantic waste of time and I love this game so much, I understand the first two time I sunk were my fault. But seriously, these guys really had no reason to do that. This game is riddled with human trash and I am filled with disgust and frustration at this point. This is not being pirates, this is being despicable rats with no goal in life other than to remove joy from others.
This quest took me 3 to 4 hours.

    I want to quit

  • @sychers Sounds like hell of an adventure to me. Lucky you.

Also, I wouldn't call other people "human trash" because they beat you in a video game. Show some respect and decency.

  • @l4chsfps These players didnt seem to be decent and respectful anyway by pursuing such act. I was full of anger and frustration when I wrote that so sorry for the wording. Just wanted to talk about this to let the anger flow out

  • @mr-dragon-raaar I agree with you because some of my adventures recently have been ruined by people who don’t need the treasure. They even said that to my friend, and so I wonder why they did such an act. People are awful

  • While I don't agree with that playstyle (camping TT caves and the like), unless they were being vulgar in the process, I don't think they were doing anything wrong - they were just being pirates.

Agreed, not the most admirable behaviour, but it's part of the game. If people are too emotionally fragile to the point of hurling insults at people who bested them in a video game, they might want to close the game, take a deep breath and come back later when they are calmer.

    • Be a good sport. Sea of Thieves is a pirate game, and stealth, stealing and battles are all part of the fun. All pirates on the seas accept that, but be a good sportsman in both victory and loss.

    • Sea of Thieves is a game. Games are meant to be fun. If you become angry or frustrated, take a break. Don’t be rash and act out your anger in a way that could ruin the experience for others and lead to a report being filed against you.

  • @mr-dragon-raaar they didnt call him names, they killed him. In fair play. Maybe they needed something at the island. The problem is the OP isnt following the code of conduct.

Sorry, I have more of a problem with the OPs complaint then the people who sank and killed them.

  • Your own fault for attempting a Tall Tale solo. You were one guy alone on a sloop - easy pickings for a crew of three. Mistake number one. Mistake number two was assuming they'd leave you alone.

Bottom line is this is a Pirate game - people are free to be real nasty and it's not technically against the rules. Stealing, killing, sabotage, the works. It only crosses the line when people start throwing vulgarities. Of course, there are some exceptions in the case of just spawn-camping people on their ship and not sinking them or taking their loot.

  • The perils of doing tales solo.

Not the most practical solution, but one that works.
If you know you are going to be in a vault for some time alone, scuttle your ship before you enter.
You can always hide the artifact when you complete task and sail back to collect it. This will alert no one you are on the island.
Adds extra time to your tale, but drastically reduces the chance of being ambushed by such players.

Ahh like the respect and decency they showed him?
    They didnt "win" anything.
They are trash and everything the game could do without!!
Anyone that defends that sort of behaviour is no better.

Still. Calling other people human trash goes way too far and reaches a level on which you begin to dehumanize them. For what? For their playing style?

No matter how much of a pain in the ... these guys are, calling them human trash makes you no better than them. If that is the way you want to settle things, you do you. But then stop crying and act your age.

Also, thanks for assuming that I condone pointless spawn killing for the sake of trolling, thus calling me human trash. Tells me a lot about your type, really.

This was on the uncharted island. No voyages go there except for tall tales, and these generally route you to an unused vault.

tl;dr these guys knew exactly what they were doing. They were trolling for a laugh at someone else’s expense. Punching down to make themselves feel superior. Personally I think those types of people are the worst kind of person.

OP, did they actually take the Shroudbreaker stone in the end?

  • Often people mess up someone's Tall Tales adventure by accident. Usually they are just looking to steal some Loot. This just happens. It's a Pirate Game

But you also get the mentally and emotionally under-developed, insecure, sadistic, wastes of DNA (usually teenage boys) who think it's great fun to ruin other people's game. Unfortunately this happens too.

Luckily the first category largely outnumbers the second category. Unfortunately it just takes a few bad apples to ruin the barrel.

  • @viperishemu2992 unfortunately this one sounds like the latter. Accidental griefing generally doesn’t involve waiting outside the vault for someone to emerge.

Yes, the third event definitely sounds like band of D-bags.

  • stars of a thief is a long journey ,and this players knew what they did maybe they were bored and decided to grief...and 3vs 1 isnt not really fair,i think instead of pve servers we should get ship specific server....

  • @sychers

It's a tough break, dude. I've had that kinda thing happen to me a couple times while running Tales.

Try not to let it get to you too much. People who derive pleasure from ruining others' good time thrive on the negativity their actions create. The best way to fight back is not to give them that negativity. Shake it off and soldier on, secure in the knowledge that they can do nothing to stop your eventual success.

While losing out on the Tale right at the end is frustrating, try not to see it as time wasted. You've become more familiar with the Tale now, so the next time won't take as long. Each run through, successful or not, makes you more efficient at it.

What people like the ones you encountered desperately hope you forget, is that they can't ruin your fun. Not overall. The best they can do is be an annoying speed bump in the short term. But you can come back and you will succeed. And they will be left behind and forgotten as you sail off into the sunset.

  • all this is very sad

  • IMO Tall Tale items should be sellable.
To offset the pain of losing a TT item: If you have acquired the item, you can retrieve it for a small cost from the TT NPC.

This way, both parties can still have a positive outcome from any theft. The TT player can still finish their quest and the thief can get a reward.

  • When people feel the need to call people "Human trash" and get that riled up and personal for dying in a video game, it shows they are emotionally immature and quite petty.

@ViperishEmu2992 If trolls are supposed to be mostly teenagers, I sure hope people who get as riled up against them are as well, I can't imagine grown adults cursing an insulting people over a game.

Not really. Human trash (or despicable rats) is simply a subjective judgement. One could come to such a conclusion after interacting people via any form of media. TV, radio, a public speech, an online video game ...etc.

The third (and final) experience of the OP seems to indicate players who were obviously just trying to ruin another players enjoyment of the game.

Human trash, griefers, despicable rats, bullies, teenage boys.... whatever insult you choose to call them doesn't really matter.

Perhaps these players just made an honest mistake. Maybe they will grow into well developed adults, or maybe they are and always will simply remain trash? Whatever the case the OP is entitled to their feelings. Video game, real world, TV show, movie ... is irrelevant to a subjective experience.

  • If your doing good in video games your doing good life. They probably had a ****** day and wanted to vent. Or have a ****** life and need to vent all the time. All in all you can't get mad at people in video games, it will go nowhere. Just count it up as a loss and move on. It's better for the soul.

  • @gundy-the-shark there are multiple tall tales that go to same island, no way to know if they needed to be there.

This still isn't griefing, its pvp.

  • @viperishemu2992 Sure thing, OP is entitled to his petty feelings. Some people cuss, some throw insults, some flip tables, some break things, whatever immature people needs to vent their irrational and confusing emotions 👍

  • @bloodybil said in Disgusting players grief my tall tale:

Some people cuss, some throw insults, some flip tables, some break things,

And some steal objects in SoT that have no value to them.

If only we could all grow up together. =P

Of course that would be ideal! Why not be the bigger man when this outcome looks unlikely though? ;)

  • The problem is playing the game just so you can rob people and grief has with it zero risk and can have high pay offs, let's face it what's the worst that can happend to a PvP greifer crew if they fail? there is zero penalties or risk involved, their ship gets sank (no problem) they lose nothing and are up in running again instantly with a brand new ship ready to attack you again, rinse and repeat....ad infinitum, balance that with doing voyages and events which are high risk have little pay off (unless you invest hours) and have massive penalties when you are killed as you can lose hours of time you have invested.

Untill PvP carries any risk and some sort of penalty for failing, I would just adobt the PvP play style as the game has now turned into one big team deathmatch rather than an online pirate RPG.

  • @bloodybil

Which is my general approach to such situations. Still, that stance came about after much trial and error during my younger, stupider days. So I can't begrudge people who haven't quite reached that conclusion yet.

But that's why my go-to advice for this type of situation is to ignore and persevere. It doesn't mean the aggressors should be let free to do as they please, but we should be able to seperate discussion of the topic from anger at being trounced ingame.

Relax they are just venting on a forum through pure frustration, we all like to vent our emotions now and again it's what we all do as humans, it's not like any names were mentioned or anyone was approached personally, but getting personal and calling someone 'petty' and 'immature' is a sure way to get this locked, please be nice 🙂.

People can vent, I have nothing against that. It can be done in a more civilised way for sure though. I doubt this thread would get locked, but if anything, I think calling people "human garbage" and "despicable rat" is a tad more demeaning than "petty".

  • I still wonder why Tall Tale items can be picked up by non-crew members at all.

If they could be sold or used to finish your own tale I'd completely understand it but as is this feature means they can only be used to fail someone else's tall tale.

Had this been addressed? Seems like an obvious fix, unless I'm not considering something.

Removing this would mean one could happily pvp, even be killed or sunk, and just get back to the tale after. Granted you'd need to plan ahead in case of a sink, and there are other ways to halt a tale, but better that than having a random crew dump your item in the red (happened to me once, boy, revenge was fierce that day).

Getting personal is not very civilised and I am not getting into a game of 'what he said' just be nice and kind to people, that's all 🙂

Agreed, calling players names for not agreeing with their play style isn't civilised, let's all be nice and kind! :)

  • You didnt really lose anything, just time which comes and goes.
Yes it very bad and disrespectful too mess with a quest/story mission when you really gain nothing for doing so. (Gaming wise) It still a pirate thing to do, ruin a sailors day.

Just do it again, and since you already done it once, you should know most of what u need to do and zip on by it.

  • I was on a 3-man brig last night doing a TT when two sloops try to double team us (4v3) and then when we sank them, a Galleon approached us right after. While they were trying to attack, I was on the island working on the TT while my friends held them off. We managed to get the TT finished and dipped out with our prize before they could catch us.

Going solo isn't easy, and I suggest using the official Sea of Thieves Discord linked here: discord.gg/seaofthieves . People there are willing to help work towards a common goal on that server. Best of luck!

  • Yep, unfortunately Tall Tales are wholly incompatible with the "rules" of the world that Rare has set up.

This is why the game cannot grow.
