Game Chat is still a problem

  • Rare, it’s still an issue with game chat - voice chat.

Some people cant hear me (and they dont have other crews muted) or I can’t hear them (and I NEVER have other crews muted) and whenever I ask (if they can hear me), they always say their mics aren’t muted and I always check my own mic beforehand.

This mic communication has caused many issues for me as well as other fellow pirates out on the seas. Conflicts when none were to be started in the first place, is the major on. Had a crew with the reapers flag roll up to me and they were in game chat saying they needed commendations, but I couldn’t hear them and I opened fire because it appeared like one of them was going for their own cannons. They informed me later what was up.

Is there ever going to be a fix for this?

  • I've had the same problem last update and this update.. It's not as fun at TFOD if you cannot hear other players In your alliance

  • It's unfortunate that we have to deal with this issue, but at least the quick chat still works.

  • @galactic-geek

It doesn’t help prevent situations like ones I’ve been in

  • @agent-samuraii

I had this the other night. I always check my mic when I load in and the game was showing the indicator. (If my crew had been on, I could have checked with them I know but it had been working fine the night before so I wrongly assumed it was okay!)

I met a crew, wanting to form an alliance to do FotD and they were talking to me. I was trying to talk to them (again, indicator showing up) but they couldn't hear me talk. They kept asking me if I had a mic and I was next to yelling down my mic at them. They got frustrated and killed me over and over as I attempted to type in text chat explaining.

    Fun times in SoT.

  • @galactic-geek not sure about quick chat or what it is.. I'm what they call a trash console player! Chat was really bad tonight most of the time it didn't work...sigh. Can't believe I boarded a brig without sweet talking my way up there first ( was seeking ships to help me kill the gally that was hoging the Fotd) typing msgs manually outside game is not fun.

  • The convoluted xbox chat system doesn't help.

On PC, it doesn't work half the time (sounds bad, mic transmits garbage, flat out doesn't work at all in some cases) and the interface is just bad so most people use discord.

On XBox, you can't use party and game chat at the same time so if you are in one, you can't hear people in the other channel. Who thought that was a good idea?

I assume that the game chat functionality is actually a Microsoft service and not Rare's own implementation so it will probably take ages to get fixed or see any improvement at all.

You would like to think that a company like Microsoft would have a decent well thought out program for PC. It is so weird that it is the complete opposite. The app itself is clunkily designed and microphones are such a pain to get working. I have no issues with any other game, steam, or discord in getting my microphone to work. Even my buddy on Xbox can't hear the other players half the time. He isn't even in party chat at that moment either.

It boggles my mind that Rare struggles so much with dealing with basic quality of life updates. Hit registration is still horrible, it took months to finally fix people shooting ourselves from cannons, and black screen is still a thing.

On XBox, you can't use party and game chat at the same time so if you are in one, you can't hear people in the other channel. Who thought that was a good idea?

This is such a community standard in PC gaming, it feels so weird that others can't do this. Wish Xbox would allow apps to run in the background, Xbox is missing out on a well designed program like Discord.

  • @nabberwar i dont have any issues with party chat on xbox or using it on my phone. the problem is in the game itself. it can't seem to handle more than 5 or 6 people at the same time. its really bad at the FOTD with the huge gatherings i've been seeing.

They really need to just allow game chat and party chat at the same time like on PC.

For me it was something to do with dealing with Teredo for the Xbox app in order to get my mic to properly function. This thing actually blocked my microphone, not the simple solution of just changing the default input device on.

If you want a glimpse of how fun that trouble shooting, here is some light reading.

  • @nabberwar Toredo tunnel is a pain. I had my windows firewall disabled because I'm behind a network firewall and I know what I'm doing but it wanted me to enable the firewall so that toredo could do it's thing. So I do that and the party chat worked but half the time when I joined XBox party chat my mic would be blaring high pitched static for some reason. You can imagine how fun that was for the other people in the group.

  • @nabberwar oh yea, i've had that issue before and had to jump through major hoops to get it working. and now teredo is built into windows as of 1903 and that error just randomly pops up even though my network is open. one laptop is fine and it never happens and the other is borked. so yea, i feel your pain. they need to sort that mess out.
