Virtual Reality Support

  • Every time I play this game, I always think about how amazing of a VR Game this would be. I love VR, and this game is just perfect for it. Adding support for major headsets like the Oculus Rift, Oculus Rift S, Oculus Quest, HTC Vive, and the Valve Index would be amazing.

  • My brother has the HTC Vive and I'm repeatedly floored by how amazing VR really is (sometimes literally)! I absolutely concur, 5,000%! 😄

  • I imagine Sea of Thieves would look absolutely incredible in VR and much of the gameplay would translate very well but given the number of issues that exist around VR sickness/motion sickness I can see Sea of Thieves being an issue to play for many in VR.

Since Microsoft, for some reason, haven't made Windows Mixed Reality headsets compatible with XBox I'm not sure how interested they are in really promoting VR gaming at this time even if they have a number of games that might make for promising VR titles.

Well, MS might be saving it for the NextBox, and Rare has a 2-year lead time on development, so... It's definitely in the realm of possibility.

Oh, and I almost forgot to mention that in 1 of the developer videos showcased months ago, you can clearly see VR applications on 1 of their studio PC monitors. This leads me to believe that it's not a matter of if, but when. 😉

  • @galactic-geek I agree that the XBox Project Scarlett console is likely to support VR.

Not sure why they gave it a miss for this generation when their console competitors didn't. Microsoft has both a console powerful enough to run VR as well as their own VR platform so it doesn't seem like it would really cost them much to implement, making the two compatible denies their competitors a USP, it would massively increase the market for Windows Mixed Reality (both hardware and software) and all the time they would be getting more market research from their consumers.

For whatever reason Microsoft don't seem that interested in pushing VR during this current generation which is probably why they only have two first party hero products for VR in Halo Recruit which is free and is now 2 years old and Minecraft.

As for Sea of Thieves specifically I believe that most figures put the PC player base of Sea of Thieves at under 20% of total. Looking at Steam less than 1% of players have VR according to their hardware surveys. That suggests that the current market for a Sea of Thieves VR title is pretty low and if those figures are accurate reflections then you're looking at less than 0.2% of the current player base being able to play Sea of Thieves in VR, yes VR could potentially increase the playerbase but it's likely that they would only look to implement VR if it would be very cheap for them to do so or they were extremely confident of drawing in considerably far more PC players than they currently have.

Some kind of Sea of Thieves VR experience could definitely be entertaining and when VR adoption gets a bit higher and/or Microsoft shows more interest in VR then Sea of Thieves is something that could make sense to get the VR treatment but I just can't see them making a full VR version of the game in the immediate future as awesome as it could be.

  • @chris5626 thats why its called virtual "reality" sea sickness comes with being a sailor! but yeah it could be an issue

  • @jollyolsteamed lol yes it would certainly add authenticity to the experience!

  • @chris5626 yeah totally! combat could feel a bit more real too!

  • @jollyolsteamed Imagine what the Grog Chest would do to people!

  • @chris5626 omg! that would be worse than the sailing part haha! just your screen woobling about i've played the joyride game on VR and if thats wonky i can't imagine the grog chest

  • I had always hoped Microsoft would get involved with VR, especially as Sony incorporate it already.
But I think they are still nursing the burns from Kinnect.
It surely must play a large part in the future of gaming, and look forward to the day when it finally does arrive on Xbox.
I can only imagine how great this game would look like using it. Seems we are a few years away from that yet though 😭

  • @itsjustchris853
Well Sir , allthough i can't use VR myself because of ,well , bad eyesight , i fully support your call...This is a game that must be placed on the best possible way to play ...on the condition ...that the traditionally way of playing stays supported and developed...

But , in truth , i fear if VR is almost true to realism then you better make a timeshedule to play because having a full stomach and a VR game of Sea of Thieves may lead to Sea sickness....hihihihi, little joke

  • VR is in a good place right now technology-wise (it's legit amazing), but not price-wise (it can break the bank). Costs need to come down if it wants to become more consumer-friendly.

As for becoming sea-sick, my friends have both lost their lunch and nearly broken bones due to just how intense it can become - despite their unfortunate circumstances, it's always fun to watch.

  • VR doesnt make everybody dizzy.
Sure it can be expensive to get into but its worth every penny.

I fully support vr for this game. It would be amazing especially if you are one of the lucky ones like me who doesnt get motion sickness with no comfort options required.

  • @daringclarky that is true VR can make you sick depending on what your doing
and the VR is not for someone with faint wallets like (me) its rather expensive but it would be a nice thing to have

  • @jollyolsteamed I only have PSVR.
Id love a proper pc with VR. I dont have a gaming rig tho.

But id love to explore some of the oc vr games like elite dangerous and that.

Its possible to train yourself to feel ok in VR. But it means subjecting yourself to long sessions pushing through the dizziness.

Eventually a day comes where you have no side effects and you are totally comfortable even playing standing up VR games.

I miss the dizziness playing space flight combat games like eve valkyrie, it was so immersive when my stomach churned doing 180 flips.

You are right though, if the price dropped we'd not only have more vr players but a lot more VR games. Maybe even AAA vr games too.

I don't get sick or dizzy in VR. When I said that I literally hit the floor, I'm referring to either:

    1. Falling from complete exhaustion after hours of play, or
    2. Freaking out after returning to real reality, which always feels weird for a bit after taking off the headset.
  • VR in SoT would be absolutely awesome. However I would definitely have to keep a real bucket handy!

  • @daringclarky yeah that too i run an old gtx 680 which is very old and my pc would not be able to handle a vr i also have a PSVR tho its not as good as the pc vr mainly the games they offer are much much more fun looking and inventive but sea of thieves would be a fun idea to explore in vr

  • @galactic-geek i never experienced dizzy or sick feelings when i started using the psvr tho my feet were giving up on me and lying down had never felt better i guess it depends on the person using it

Ha! Its so wierd when its daylight, take it off and its pitch black.

    Im glad you enjoy VR.
Its truly amazing. Its only gonna get better too.

  • As someone that owns and uses four different V.R. headsets, I can't picture fighting and moving around and fighting very well, in SoT, in V.R. Someone on a console or someone just using a regular P.C. setup would destroy you, the V.R. user.

I mean, if Rare could pull it off, I'd love it, but, yeah... It wouldn't be easy to play like it is now. At least fighting wise. The sailing part would be amazing though.

  • Resurrecting this post, now that SOT is bound for Steam...how bout VR now??? Also too likely may find a way to make it work with Vortex even without support officially...Thoughts?

  • @frcebewthu i doubt it seeing as vr takes forever to implement
