Separating New Players until they hit level 10

  • Played a bit of Open Crew this weekend and kinda figured out the biggest issue with it...The New Player.

The New Player isn't bad (well not always), they just need to learn the game. Now some are very willing to learn the ropes...but most are like trying to herd cats...they are just everywhere and most times just end up brigged on the bigger boats. This actually can create a negative playing experience for new players who simply say goodbye without seeing what the game really has to offer. This also can be a nightmare for experienced players who simply stop playing in open crew so they don't have to deal with that chaos popping in at the wrong time.

What if you separated players who were under level 10 for the 3 main factions (and the easiest faction to level)?

They would be playing with people at the same skill level as them and probably enjoying the game much more as they figure things out. This would also give more advanced players a chance to match up in open crew without having to worry of the chaos factor of having a noob pop in a drop anchor in a firefight or take off with your ship at a wreck.

Before anyone complains...you could still invite a player into your game at any level so if you wanted to play with your friend who just bought the game you could without issue. It just helps with the open crew issues that seem to plague it.

This could also be used in Arena...separating new pirates till they hit Sea Dogs 10.

Hitting 10 is pretty easy...but at least they will have grasped the game by then.

    Thoughts?

  • i think this could be an ok idea the problem is it really doesn’t matter what lvl they are iv seen PL who still don’t quite understand how the game works sometime the biggest problem new players have is they don’t grasp that this game needs communication to work as an effective crew or at minimum not smash into ever island and have an eye out for other crews lvl doesn’t usually mean anything for that...also you have Trolls either lvl 1 across the board or lvl 50 they just suck....the other problem is getting players to understand that Adventure mode IS PVPVE meaning even if you don’t like fighting other crews doesn’t mean they can’t fight you and players of all lvls seem to have a hard time under standing this

  • As long as they stay away from the Anchor I have no problem with Noobs.

  • It'll never happen. Goes against Rare's whole thing about not separating players.

Levels mean nothing regarding skill, knowledge, experience, or competence tbh.

i'm sorry Sir , but i don't agree … Ever since the Alpha's Rare pressed here , on this very Forum, that no one should be excluded for whatever reason: Religion, Gender , Colour and what so ever more...

i take a look at myself and i will tell you that i'm the worst Pirate ever . In a pvp combat situation a toddler of three years old takes it's sword and let me see all the corners of the ship before i go to ask for " forgiveness for all my sins" towards the Ghostly ferryman...If you read this you would never enlist me in yer crew and...i'm Pirate Legend Level 9...which only means i spended a lot of time in this Great Game. But letting me handling sails , repair the ship , take treasure with the "sharpoon" ( * Oh nooo, not the " i sharpened the harpoon and call it a sharpoon" joke ...bloody moron), shoot ships with cannons , then you maybe would reconsider…

No , a new Pirate needs to be embraced , tutored without using the whip. They need to feel welcome or they walk away...i give up easely on Mulitplayer games purely because of the fast and hard judgement people throw on you...A New Pirate won't maybe not as good as you ,since you carry a lot of experience under yer cloak ,but we all started as New Ones once , and people had patience back then, since we were all new...

We learned this game by falling and getting up again. If others have given us that time , if others teached us their tips and tricks , why wouldn't we return the favour towards the New or Newer Pirates?...

i'm not saying you have to break yer head and stay if a New Pirate drops the anchor for the fifth time in a few minutes while everybody else told him/her not to , but if they don't get the blood from under yer fingernails and they listen , even while they make " mistakes " , then why not embrace this Pirate and teach him or her some tricks from you…

When i meet a New , and mostly younger Pirate ,since i'm running in the Autumn of Life, then we try our utmost best to place as much hints into this person and if he or she walks away ,it almost feel like i placed a son or daughter into the Rich World of Sea of Thieves…
And if i see them later again , on the Sea on our or another crew , i try to recognize if he or she still uses a few tricks he or she learned from us and if they do...Then a feel of Pride runs through our veins...in silence.

  • An obviously bad idea.

They need to learn, and the best way to do that is playing with experienced players.

So whats gonna stop me from makin a new account and killin noobs all day?

  • @xshadovvhunterx

The game is a lot more accomodating already compared to the past. The first 4 to 5 months of the games release were the bloodiest of the games history. We all survived back then and learned the game through trial and error.

I don't think its an issue of separating new players and letting them learn. I think its an issue of getting players to ask for help or to focus on learning first before doing other things.

There are players out there that are level 30 in the main factions but level 6 in Athena's. New players are skipping low level questing and going straight for end game quests. Then they get sunk because the quests for them take HOURS since they don't know all the riddles or how to fight or anything, then when they get sunk they get mad because they lost hours of work.

One of the reasons why we have countless Pirate Legends that don't actually know how to play the game and why the Pirate Legend Title is completely useless now.

The other issue is that newer players don't listen very well. They want to be part of all the action but never want to do anything else. When they get bored their attention wanders and when you try to talk to them about the mistakes they made, they get defensive.

It mostly boils down to age really. Adults are easier to communicate with and less likely to get worked up emotionally by criticism. Which is why most people ask for adults only in posts.

If you want newer players to learn then they are going to have to get their own feet wet and ask for help.

  • Pros & cons with this.

If i was new and played with other new players i would probably avoid attacking others to level up and collect gold but the second i would go over 10 and go vs higher levels i would get smacked down since im not used to people attacking me.

  • I'd be ok with an optional matchmaking thing for new players.

Give them servers where it's all new players plus one or two more experienced players who are there to teach.

How would you stop experienced crews from going in there seal cub clubbing though?

If you didn't let more experienced pirates in there who will teach the seal cubs?

The two problems as I see it with new players: 1) they start fights that they cannot win. 2) they get salty when they lose and do things like shout abuse, spawn camp and grief tall tales players, that more experienced pirates frown upon and regard as bad form.

The bad behaviour is usually because when they actually do find a boat they can beat they make the most of it, given that it's not a common occurrance.

I personally think giving them noob servers might help the atmosphere on the seas. The major issue is that it'd break matchmaking even further and lead to quieter and more passive seas over all, which I don't think I'd enjoy.

  • Firstly your level in a faction does not equate in anyway to a skill level the player may or may not have. You could be afk on a galleon, do nothing and get level 10. You still wouldn't have an increased amount of "skill" at the game.

Secondly alt accounts would get used to attack new players or a player could level up all the way to 50 in the 3 main factions but as long as they don't buy the promotions from the trading company they are still considered as level 0.

I get where you are going with the suggestion but personally I can't see it as a workable thing.

  • In theory, I like this idea. However, there are 2 problems:

    1. The newbies are often the most aggressive players in my experience. So it wouldn't create a peaceful environment.
    2. You might think: well yeah, but at least they're not super skilled. But I think there's plenty of very skilled and experienced players out there who would love to create a new account just to mess with new players.

I don't know if this would fix it. Maybe a private server option until level 10 would be a better idea? Then, once they get the hang of voyages, they can practise PvP in the 'real' game.

  • @xshadovvhunterx

It's a good idea for Arena, but not for Adventure I'm afraid.

Adventure is all about meeting players of varying motivations and levels of experience. To separate that in any way would take away from the experience as a whole for the wider player base. It's what makes everyone's stories so unique.

  • Can you imagine the smurfing that would happen?
