About crew and ship sizes, again

  • I want to pick up a topic again because I have accurate feedback from a certain group of players.

I'm active in a World Of Tanks clan that has a core strength of 16 players. Of these 16 players, 9 played Sea Of Thieves. Currently it's only me playing with a friend who doesn't belong to our clan.

Why is that so, what happened? The development is foreseeable. We agreed who would come into the game when. Since we can't adjust the ship size without canceling an order or finishing it, we're not very dynamic. We always tried to start with the intention of adjusting the ship size. Had three people agreed to meet, a brigantine, etc. In the course of time one of the following events always occurred:

    • A player won't join or has to leave early - the ship is too big.
    • A player would like to join, but the ship is too small.

Leaving a crew of friends on too large a ship is considered disgraceful. The players therefore often play over the fun and torture themselves - actually they must have stopped long ago, but because of the crew, well, still a little...

Not being able to admit a friend to the crew because you have chosen a ship that is too small is regrettable to the playing crew. With one more person you would choose another job, a more lucrative or more demanding one. Do you break off and start again on a bigger ship? How long this will take! Oh no, too bad, you keep playing. Very often we play together on a sloop, while three friends are in the party with us, but don't join the game, because the entry is too complicated. They watch a video, play something else. This means that players are only prevented from playing the game by the rigid system.

That's why in the future you have to think about playing it over and over again, or do I choose a game where I can play in a group, but still come and go? Especially if you just want to play a few rounds. The latter wins.

Don't think LFG or Discord would fix this. Everytime we start LFG or Discord to get people join, but guess what, it is not the same as playing with your real friends, neither does this work every time. It is not the same and a flaw.

So the old suggestion is repeated:

    • Please let us change the ship type at the outpost while the order is running and while the session is running, depending on the size of the crew.
    • And please let players who have been active during a section of the game get their share of the success, even if they leave the game before.

  • Fully agree on that.
My crew is also around 10 players and we often have someone leave or other who want to join while a journey, especially if we do Athena and also punishing if you need to leave a ship full of supplies and maybe even a good portion of fish to be able to invite the 4th mate.
And if you are on a Galleone and 2 need to go earlier it's a pain to finish the voyage with 2 on a Galleone.

It would really be cool if we can change the ship type at the outpost.
I wouldnt mind to pay 1000 gold for that.

  • not a bad idea but i honestly think you should first try to plan your sessions more carefully if you know you might have something come up dont start anything that you know will take time and if a friend texts you tell him to wait until you turn your stuff in i just really dont want to chase a sloop and have them switch to a galleon at an outpost and load 4 cannonballs into each cannon and unload at me and it all really comes down to planning make sure the people and yourself know how long they can sail before you start anything under an hour theres barley no point in sailing an hour is like minimal depending on what you do

  • SoT is definitely the kind of game that requires preplanning to prevent these sorts of things from happening. Try to plan for a time when everybody's available, like the weekend, and plan early, like a week in advance. Make it a big deal so everyone is psyched.

While changing ships is a much-wanted feature by many, and the devs support it, they have gone on record stating the difficulties in adding such a feature, especially due to server limitations and player count - even if it were added, you may still not be able to use it if the server is too full.

  • @galactic-geek and if they do intend to add it they better add a function so you cant switch during combat

  • @jollyolsteamed No, I imagine it would require scuttling and losing all of your loot and supplies 1st...

  • @galactic-geek oh thats good enough for me

  • I think it’s just cause they like Tanks more than Pirate ships.

How come you think we don't try our best to do so, my friend? We do, but still, this things just happen all the time. :)

You may think so, but I can communicate with them - therefore, wrong, made up suggestion of yours, sorry.

I would not mind a server migration in such a case, should I?

    ... ... ... ah ... ... nope ... ... 😲😲😲

Yeah, something like that. Sell your things, store your supplies, take one or two grogs in the tavern while the shipbuilders rebuild your ship. Meanwhile, new players, suited to the size of the ship, could join and sing a song with the crew in the tavern, server migrations can happen without any loss.

You know, it should be a bit quicker and much smoother compared to start a complete new session and you shouldn't have to cancel the running order.

Not to forget: Pirates, who in the meantime ride along on an order, would have to be paid proportionately, the codex requires that. They made their contribution. OK, that probably leads to bad abuse. Forget it. Not every idea is a good one...

Dont mind, there is no need.
If you on a Brig with 3 mates and the server is full with 5 Galleons with 4 players each you wont be too many players if you switch to a Galleone.
If you are the 6th ship on a server it doesnt matter if you are solo on a sloop or 4 on a Galleone.
As long as someone has a ship on the server it's irrelevant what size this ship is and how many players run it.

  • @goedecke-michel I feel your pain. As someone who has a nice friendly community that plays the game there is often people leaving or dropping in. A way for mlre friends to join would also be nice. And indeed switching ships when people drop out.
