Country flags!

  • I think that it will be a great idea to add country flags in the Sea of Thieves. I also think that the game needs more flags so it would be a big choice of flags to select.
I'll like to share my danish flag to the battlefield!

  • Sorry Matey.
Country flags.... Not going to happen.
Please feel free to use search function to see how extensively this has been discussed previously.

  • I would like this and think it would be fun!

    [mod edited]

And it stinks too cause the Union Jack (is that what you brits call your flag?) is synonymous with ships like these sailing and stuff!

  • It's a good way to promote nationalism, tribalism, and jingoism.

Nothing kills immersion faster than a Filipino or Canadian pirate ship.

    Not such a great idea.

  • @dragoncat159

What I have previously said, in every thread of this nature.
Since we are having the same discussion again... here is my same series of thoughts. :)

Whilst I agree we should all have a sense of national pride no matter what lump of land we occupy, lets leave that in real life.
National flags are too decisive and exclusive.
Whilst we all live under a flag of one colour or another.
To other people the 'statement & the symbol' of "Whatever" flag, can have, & often has a different meaning to different people.

History and national rivalry runs deep, a flag that unites one identity, often divides another.

I quote 3 articles from the "Pirate Code"
They aren't directly related to this issue,
But none the less the introduction of "National Flags" breaks their spirit.

Article 1 : The Sea Calls To Us All
Everyone is welcome on the Sea of Thieves regardless of age, gender, race, sexuality, nationality or creed.
Article 2 : The Sea Unites Us as One Community
Outside the heat of battle or piracy on the high seas, all crews shall bond together as a community of like-minded souls.
Article 4 : All Crewmates Are Equal
Let each crewmate be respected as equal and free to follow their own bearing, speak openly and vote in affairs of the voyage.

    Issues

Far too political: which is against the games ethos.

Timeline: SoT is based in the golden age of piracy, ( current or old style flags?, oh wait a second... my country doesn't exist back then )

Practicality: There are at least 250+ current national flags.
Then why stop at national flags?
Special interest flags? ( White/Black nationalist organisations... etc )
I know you aren't asking for the aforementioned, no sane individual would.
But they are symbols in their own right that people identify with.
Rightly or Wrongly... not a discussion for here.

I believe at times.... real life issues should be separated from what is an experience for all.
A place where we can leave all that c*** behind in real life.
    Where it belongs.
We are here to play the game, & enjoy our journeys.

  • @glannigan thing is pirates only flew a countries flag if they wanted to fool another ship or if they recognized that countries law and payed those taxes.

In the sea of thieves we have disowned our heritage and we no longer live in a nation apart from the SoT.

Also while patriotism is all good this will promote nationalism more then anything else

  • Well what if they just used the ones from every Pirate game ever?

    English
    Dutch
    Spanish
    French

How can that possibly be a big deal?

I'm not that young matey :)

  • @glannigan stop this dude you are bordering on discrimination with the call out to a certain age group, multiple non age grouped reasons have been pointed out over the course of the suggestion that has been suggested a fair few times now.

  • @glannigan then its a good thing that dude is considered gender neutral

  • I dont know about that idea as much as im up for being proud of your country i can see so many ugly arguments, im french and i live in Israel everytime i mention Israel everyone have an opinion for the good or bad.
People ddosd my pc killed me in many games while calling me a child murderer (makes me laugh everytime) what im saying that the downside of this feature is endless arguments.
Of course that if someone is saying anything racist you can report him but would bring too many pointless arguments.

  • You have to be aware that the " Millenials " as you call them , have gone to school and were educated by people of our age...We have seen what we and previous generations have done wrong and try to avoid future calamities…

Now , personally , i would be disgusted to see my own flag in the Sea. Am i a traitor ? Do i not have proud feelings about my origin? No, i'm proud ,in a sane way to my little ackward country but seeing that ugly coloured flag would be such an atmosphere killer that i would rather not have it in the game...

Another thing , many Pirates are excluded or avoided because of their language ...i have been a spectator and have met crews that are avoided because some people couldn't understand nor communicate with them...A flag would turn many immediatly around even if , let us take Spanish , this Spanish Pirate could speak some English too…

this is a game and i play side by side by People from UK, USA , Australia , France , Netherlands , Spain, Portugal ,Germany and so many others ...If there is a will ,then there is a way to understand eachother but flags ...nah...This game doesn't need flags and certainly not an ugly coloured one like mine...

  • Could we all agree the Union Jack 🇬🇧 is synonymous with ships
Of this period and the Flag and even a matching Hull and Sails would look fantastic?

Can we just agree on that? Take the politics out of it, it would be a beautiful sight.

And No I ain’t British but cool is cool and pretty is pretty!

Now with the store maybe capitalism will over come political correctness cause I wouldn’t hesitate to drop $20.00 to 29.99 on a British looking Livery or an Australian one or a few others if they looked sweet!

  • @l4chsfps Well spotted matey!

Just going to remind those above that Sea of Thieves calls to all even Balsa Wood... and we must remain respectful to each other.

  • @glannigan Your post has been edited as it goes against the Forum Rules and Pirate Code.

    ALWAYS:

Be respectful. Sea of Thieves is a game for everyone regardless of age, gender, race, sexuality, nationality, creed or disability. Treat everyone with respect. Diversity only enriches this larger-than-life pirate community of ours and makes Sea of Thieves’ world a far more interesting one to explore. When we all play, everyone wins.

    NEVER:

Discriminate against anyone based on who they are. As stated previously, Sea of Thieves is a game for everyone regardless of age, gender, race, sexuality, nationality, creed or disability. Prejudice of any kind is totally unacceptable.

Name calling, personal attacks and using derogatory language against Community Members, Rare Employees, Global Moderators or Deckhands is not acceptable. Using such language will result in a warning, then temporary ban from the Forums and a final warning. If the action is persistent or increasingly aggressive, a permanent ban from the Forums will be issued.

Please read and abide by the Forum Rules and Pirate Code in future.

    Thank you.

Couldn’t agree more....BUT the Gay Pride 🏳️‍🌈 flag is proudly displayed in the game. (Which I think is great BTW). But kills your whole point 😐

Not sure I have a 3rd grade education. BUT I do have money and like I mentioned pretty is pretty and I would love to buy some ship livery’s and I think “Country” Flag type livery’s like the Australian And English flag would just be beautiful cosmetically speaking and I would spend Money on them!

    Lots of it!

And I wouldn’t be offended by anyone’s Livery choice (Other than the stupid one that makes the cannons Look like Lobsters and the anchor look like a mushroom, I don’t like that one).

  • @glannigan Ahoy matey!

The flag isn't named that anywhere in the game, it has just become synonymous with that movement.

And if anything, it isn't gay pride any more and much more a sign of being all-inclusive and not something to divide, as country flags would be.

  • @glannigan I think that flags and ship livery made by rare would be beautiful. I just dont think it fits into Sea of Thieves. While it is a pirate game it's based on Pirate Fantasy not the real world.

As much as the game is an escape for us, the lore makes SoT an escape for people who find entry.

  • @captain-coel

Not to think that it would not make sense for a country flag to exist of a country our pirates supposedly know nothing of... as they don't exist in the world of Sea of Thieves. It would be fourth wall, context breaking.

But was it a good idea? That also brings the real world into the game, which is why country flags shouldn't be added.

Union Jack is for the United Kingdom and Northern Ireland. Back in the days of pirates the flag representing England was flown which is a white flag with a red cross we call Saint George's Cross.

  • Smiley face flag pls 😁

  • Would love more flags, but can we please stop pricing them the same as other ship parts?????
