Five Reaper Chest not Enough

  • Hello!

Sometimes we get simple tasks that are relatively boring, like selling 500 cargo's, for some cosmetics, but now we get something awesome, the Reaper's Chest, and we only have to sell 5? I Sailed for 2 hours carrying 3 reaper chests where I only got chased by a sloop for 2 minutes until he randomly scuttled. The chest brought many experienced players back to adventure mode. There is almost one month left until next time event.

How about a commendation for 25 (or more) reaper Chests to be sold, with some Reaper Cannons or cosmetics at the end of the grind? I believe this will keep adventure servers under constant chaos for a good while.

Ignore the Ugly Cannon, just a reference

  • If it's a fun feature, why the carrot at the end of the stick? That's something that's really starting to bother me. Are pirates and adventurers of the Sea of Thieves just driven by collecting useless stuffs, making a number grows and getting a higher % of completion?

Why does it always have to be about commendations, titles and achievements? At this point why not make it unlimited and make ranks for each x amount of reapers chests sold?

I've nothing against grinders, completionnists and achievers but I would love to see updates that caters to sailors that just like to explore, discover new things without feeling being encouraged of doing it because of cool cosmectics at the end, etc. I know I can still do it but it's been 3 years I've been sailing those seas and it's just not the same.

Sorry for the rant but the only joy I find nowadays is in Insiders when there's new things to learn, discover (at a point where I didn't even do the Tall Tales in the main build because I mostly have done it all in Insiders (and I loved it)). I'm probably not the usual SoT player but there was a time where I would find joy just sailing the high seas not knowing what to be found, searching for undiscovered places, etc.

  • @jetorchidee97 you say "I know I can still do it but it's been 3 years I've been sailing those seas and it's just not the same." even though it's not even been out for 3 years :D

whilst the devs acknowledge the sailors who like to explore they must tend to the majority player base who are these grinders, completionnists and achievers whilst also on the side every now and then giving things like tall tales for the explorers to have fun with.

  • @jetorchidee97 Because people need incentives. Cosmetic rewards are good incentives when the actual content is not good enough to be its own reward. Tall Tale done once, was good enough imo. Yet they still added the "do it five times guys".

@PhuzzyBond Come on don't ask for more grind than what is already the case. I must respectfully disagree with having a steeper grind, especially for events.
I do agree that the difference in requierements between the commendations don't make sense.

You're right, I lost track it seems, I started in the Alpha so more like 2 years and a few months? edit: maybe less in fact, I've no idea, can someone enlighten me when the Alpha started?

There was a time where there wasn't a progression system, no reputation at all and I prefered it that way but that's probably just me.

There was an entire era of video games... really up until the last 15 years, honestly, where the incentive was the gameplay and fun. This RPG-driven incentive and reward delivery is a false prophet, and in fact detrimental to how players approach gaming.

Also, these are not event commendations - they are permanent.

OP: If what you seek is the fun of chasing or being chased with a Reaper's Chest, that will be there forever. Do you need an incentive other than that if you love the gameplay?

  • @PhuzzyBond you mean someting like this: legendary RC commendation???

It would fit perfectly with the others comms.

For the people who don't care about commendations. You are not obliged to do it. Play the game the way you want.

  • I agree. Since it's going to be a permanent feature, a legendary commendation with a cool title and hopefully even a cosmetic would give people a reason to keep going for them. The doubloon reward is not enough to keep me interested or others like me who have over 1k of them saved up and just like our millions of gold nothing to spend it on. 100 for PL title and if it would have a cosmetic attached to it 250 would be more suitable imo.

  • You are right about many things, carrot at the end of the stick is not the way to, but it has been like this in SoT for every single event, Rare got the players used to this. When I have 3 reaper Chests on me and no one bothers to chase for more than 2 hours, it makes them worthless. Don't forget the update is only three days old. Just another piece of loot in shipwrecks.

For the amount of effort Rare puts into these events, servers are usually calm, and they are trying to amplify the presence of players in Adventure since Arena was out and it is not working. Hence the messages "Please play Insider" "Play at that day and get this ship cosmetic", because they need analysis and graphs to optimize the game which they aren't getting.

Rare already gave us 500 Skelly Ships to grind which is 100 times harder than 25 Reaper Chests. Some didn't finish them yet, including myself, and still try and finish that. These are reasons specially for Open crews to keep coming back to the game.

I work as an Indie game developer for mobile games, I face the same issues Rare goes through but at a smaller scale due to the platform, when I don't have enough data for certain games, I cannot make proper updates, and bugs are always there because I am not getting enough feedback.

All I am saying is, things that get players excited should by highlighted and taken advantage of.

Yes something like that, something to make you "need" to chase other ships.

100% agree. Last night took 2 in a solo sloop and I was so nervous. It's almost as exciting as stealing an Athena so give us that comm and title to show off. It could unlock ghost cannons.

I'll keep doing it cause it's fun, but a goal will incentive me more (I'll say 50 or 100 chests depends on the spawn rate after the event).

  • How about no? :)

Because it’s hard enough to get them safely but they take forever to spawn!!

  • @agent-samuraii not for me. Right now it's more common than megs. I haven't seen any in a week.

  • @guilleont

Megalodons are indeed hard to get to spawn lately, but I don’t care at this point in time cuz legit, even sailing out in open waters for an extended period of time won’t always summon her, and I sail between islands a lot so that doesn’t grant her a chance to spawn too much. Dunno what you’re doing, but it’s purely RNG based regardless.

  • @phuzzybond should have been 3 commendation
    XXXX Sold
    XX Stolen
XXXX Mileage sailed with a reapers chest on board.

I dont really see it as a grind, they could have a new reaper inspired cosmetic unlock after every chest sold or every 5 chests. It wouldn't be so much of a grind but a nice extra reward as you keep cashing in the chests. If you take anything and grind it out then that's your own doing. Nothing is a grind if your having fun. I love the chests as they are but seeing a fully decked out reaper pirate with all the ship, clothing, weapons would be cool and you would know they handed in a ton of chests.

I think a definition of what I mean by what a grind is would be helpful:
"In video gaming, grinding is performing repetitive tasks, usually for a gameplay advantage or loot but in some cases for purely aesthetic or cosmetic benefits."

So it is a grind. Nothing to do with how you do it, but how many times you have to do it.

If you enjoy this, then you enjoy grinding. And that's fine ^^

  • @ironuzuka Yeah I know and the unfortunate side effects of any open world sandbox games is having to reuse and spread the content out. There just wouldn't be enough to keep players engaged with one and done things. For people who want more they can redo it and others can just passively do it over time or not do it at all I guess was my point. I just mainly want more cosmetics you can earn through gold, doubloons, commendations, or even a new random cosmetic loot item to be found in world.

  • @starquest Understood.
Don't get me wrong they did an awesome job with Tall Tales. You would get stuff from one completion, but also more stuff from grinding it.
This design was perfectly fine with me.

It is true that you either make achievements grindy to keep players engaged. Or you, like with the shrouded ghost, you add randomness and "low drop probability".
Both strategies are there to have players grind the content.

I would agree that 5 reapers chest are not enough if it wasn't a limited time event.
Some people play the game once a week for one or two hours. These people should have a chance at completing these commendations.

The 240 Arena victories is ridiculous, so most people will just overlook it. People who enjoy Arena will either grind rush it, or simply play and whenever they hit 240, be ahappy about it.
But this is not limited in time. So I have no issues with it.

As I said, I'm happy to see people grind stuff or simply casually play the content once.

  • I think 5 stolen ones would have been do-able

  • @phuzzybond

One addition to video games I hate the most are achievements and commendations to unlock skins or rewards.

I understand the motive behind it. Give players a grind that forces them to keep playing for something. However thats what I hate about it. I feel almost forced into doing it.

They are playing on an innate human emotion/nature (I forgot what it was but its an actual thing) where humans will do something because it sounds like a deal or has been presented as a limited time offer. They will do things, buy things, or try to acquire things they wouldn't normally bother with or care about, but because of this play on human nature you are almost forced into it.

You might think its not enough but I think its just fine. You have to remember there are a lot of players that don't have the same amount of time you do. Its almost a **** move to make something only accessible to players who have more time on their hands which punish other players. After a time those players will feel like they are missing out on too much and just stop playing the game.

Now if the commendations and rewards were permanent or not time limited then I would give a flying bird. However, since that is not the case then I don't think you have a good idea.

If you need a personal goal then set one, don't force other players to have to play your way to finish something or to get a reward. Thats just selfish.

Sorry, I hate that feeling the most of all. After a while the games that I used to play with my friends for fun turned into "hey we got daily's and weekly's. Oh hey lets try to work on that commendation that takes forever to accomplish so that we can get that one item that we will never use again ever"

Limited items feel nice to have right? You feel special and accomplished? You have something not many people have, its a great feeling. How often do you wear the skin? Ever? Might have wore it for a few weeks then started to wear the next big hit thing.

Like the Founder skins. That skin looks SOOOO good, but do we ever see it out on the Sea?? I haven't seen it in over a year. Used to see it every once in a while in the game after launch but not since May have I seen that skin.

Sorry, I just abhor time limited items and events. Daily's and weekly's and what not. All in the process to trick the human brain into playing your game longer and longer. Its the lazy man's way of adding nothing to something to make it seem like something more.

SIDE NOTE The reaper chest themselves are not time limited but the event is. So the commendation for them are I think. I'll have to check.

  • @xultanis-dragon The commendation to turn 5 in is not time limited. I believe it's the only non time limited part of the event.

All I am saying is, things that get players excited should by highlighted and taken advantage of.

The point is that loot is so f--kn worthless that there is no reason to even do any of these events. I'll dab into PvP but not for the loot, but for something to do. I don't want to keep killing skeletons and collecting loot if there is nothing to buy. What's the point of fighting for a chest that's essentially worthless. The reaper chest could be worth 0 doubloons or 100. It's all the same to me. At the end of the day, what am I gonna spend it on?

  • Just to add to my little rant: everything comes down to cosmetics or things to buy. There should always be a goal guy are trying to achieve to keep people playing. For example, GTA Online. It's a game that I played for years. I always had something I wanted to buy. Cars, clothing, houses, yacht, planes, helicopters. There was always a goal. It would take me days of grinding just to buy a $3,000,000 car and fix it up but it was worth it. With sea of Thieves, there is nothing to buy or grind for.

  • @shut-ur-mouth

Things are worthless because Rare did 2 things.

They lowered the Rep grind but increased the cosmetic grind so to speak.

Cosmetics used to be tied to Rep ONLY. Commendations were just a plus towards completion. Wasn't necessary for getting cosmetics, only the rep was. They changed it because Rep is so easy to get now and cosmetics not so much.

It used to cost 149 for the ship skins? During an age where Captain chests were still uncommon even with level 45 GH quests. Forts spawned every 3 to 4 hours and only had about 10 to 15k worth of loot? Even then the loot didn't really help with Merchant alliance.

Then Players started getting to Pirate Legend. After getting Pirate Legend I guess the amount of aggression went up in the game. Causing issues for the newer players who felt resentment at being attacked by players who have accomplished getting to the end game.

You had to work to actually get skins and Rep. Even dedicated players would take a month of grinding to actually get Pirate Legend and that was from hours upon hours a day.

Now the same amount of work can be done in less than a week and the amount of gold they are producing is causing an issue.

Rare had a good thing but got scared and pressured by the casual crowd. So they dumbed it down but a HUGE margin.
