Buy a mic.

  • Spend a bunch of money on an online game but not $12 for a mic???? I wish I could kick peeps off my boat who join without a $12 mic. The logic of not having a mic eludes me.

  • Or maybe they don't want to speak? Everyone can do whatever they want. Sometimes, I enter some crews and I don't want to talk, so I write in the chat or use the non-verbal communication system.

    1. An extra peripheral is not required to play a game.

    2. Talking is not required to play the game.

    3. Money isn't always plentiful for unneeded peripherals

    4. Keyboards function to type messages.

    5. Sometimes I don't want to talk.

Here is some of that eluding logic.

I have an idea if you want to get away from crew members without a mic. Find a new boat. You don’t have to ask for the ability to kick them. You can kick yourself instead.

  • With that kind of attitude hiw can you be sure they don't have a mic and just don't want to talk to you?

  • On the positive side, I can honestly say, this has been the only game that has encouraged me to use voice communication to those outside of my closest friends. I appreciate the importance of voice communication in the Sea of Thieves.

  • FYI my MIC does not work for this game, that's my reason.

  • I use my mic when playing with friends. If playing with strangers I prefer not to use my mic. This doesnt affect my gameplay or ability to communicate or take orders.

I find people that complain about none-mic-users more annoying than people that dont use mics.

  • When playing with open crews and I find myself paired with kids, I definitely don't use a mic.

The communication tools available to us through the use of every object in the game is good enough to communicate with.

  • @needsmokes

I’m the same. I’ll play with kids, but rarely will I do so on a mic. The tools Rare have made in this game for non-mic chat are exceptional, and something I hope other devs follow.

  • indeed.

For everyone saying mic isn't required to play this game - you're right but mic is required to sail on my ship.

  • i rarely speak ingame, more on discord with my crew and i let my crew handle ingame communication with other crews (if needed).

  • @TigerOmega123 It's easy to say that when you yourself aren't socially awkward or anti social. It's actually really big hurdle to talk to strangers online or in person for lot of people including me. And I think everyone on Xbox gets that trashy mic in the box (at least I did) so everyone has one unless they broke it.

  • As long as they use the ingame "chat emotes" then I don't see a problem, its the totally quiet ones that get me as I have no idea if they are understanding instructions

  • I have a mic and will talk when I feel comfortable doing so personally.
There’s a multitude of reasons why someone might not use a headset.

  • My mic will not work for this game lately, so if you want to leave a crew then do so.

  • @tigeromega123
I personally don't use a mic to avoid possible trolls ingame. I also don't do open crews, but like others have said, phrases can work for general instructions.

  • @tigeromega123 Judging from this post I wouldn't wanna talk to you either.

  • Yea I get op people on here without mics only hinder thier crew this game requires you to be able to listen and provide information at every given second.

  • @needsmokes that slowness and lack of detail from those radial texts can be costly or a time waster though.

  • I think whats the OP means is that players need to communicate more i dont think that it would really bother to OP if the other player can type but most of the players are xbox players and they cant type other then the generic auto chat so it depends if they have a mic or not.
I agree with that but the game shouldnt do anything bad to those who decided for any reason (as much as i freaking hate them) not to speak, its their choice but i really wish to see more players who wants to communicate.

  • I often sail with two friends from Germany and another from Texas, and I'm Cornish UK.
And even if we do use mics, we often can't tell what the hell is going on, even after thousands of hours together 😂

Everyone saying they don't mind it are the people without mics. This is a heavy cooperative game and mics will give you the advantage every time. Especially on Xbox (people here forget we can't type). The chat wheels are great but they dont cover everything, and interrupt your actual gameplay to do (again especially on xbox). It's fine if people dont use mics, I have a crew who does. But the crew with mics is gonna beat the one without every time.

I mainly get frustrated when other ships dont have mics. Proximity chat is god's gift to gaming and this game is awesome for it. Makes for really tense moments or really funny ones. Either way, if I pull up on a crew to chat or mess around or alliance and they don't have mics, I'm sinking them for that reason.

  • I'm on PC and I always do a "mic check" when I load into game now because the game is known to randomly stop recognising mics. Thankfully, this is a lot easier now with the voice indicator (remember when that somehow wasn't a thing?)

When I sail with my crew, at least one of them will have a mic that doesn't work in game for whatever reason. I'm not blaming the game though, it's more-often-than-not a Windows 10 issue.

Anyway, even with a working mic, I have major social anxiety so will only use it if I feel comfortable to do so. I'll usually listen for a bit to gauge the people I am around before talking over voice chat, and part of that is my Irish accent can get a variety of reactions, some pleasant and some not so much.

  • @tigeromega123

Say this to someone who is legitimately mute and would kill for the ability to vocally communicate in a multiplayer game, but just can't.

I bet you'd rethink this line of thinking very quickly...

Nope. I’m currently using a $400 mic plugged into a powered multichannel mixing console, dedicated audio compressor, and a Lexicon effects rack. I still do not mind people without a mic. I had a change of heart on this many months ago as I made friends from other countries and ones who are pretty shy online.

  • @realstyli that is a fair point gamechat is still broken half the time

  • When I play at night I never use a mic because my other half is sleeping in the next room.

Nice setup. Is your $400 mic a Shure SM7B? Or perhaps an E/V RE20?

to this i would simply respect thy wishes and move on to another vessel however if you happened to join me on a silent session i would welcome you regardless. To each their own i say.

  • I have a streamer quality mic setup that use a mixer and I often don't use my mic when I play. The reason is that I either don't want to bother people sleeping or that I simply don't feel like talking. I can communicate very well with pirate chat or by typing pretty fast with my keyboard.

Communication is very important in this game, but voice communication is overrated. While it is incredibly useful to chat with friends about random topics, it is of limited advantage when actually playing the game. I often end up on EU server (as an NA player) and I find that my random crew can understand each other more easily by text without any accent involved.

If you want absolutely that all your crew communicate by microphone, you should either use LFG or do a mic check when you join the server. If they don't have a mic, you can leave and hope your next crew has one.

I personally appreciate when someone leave my crew at the start of a game because a crewmate don't use the mic or because we don't use clothing/titles that suggest we are experienced player. It helps to filter the kind of player I really don't want to play with.

  • Non communication is one of the biggest problems in the game. Any instant you are loaded onto a ship with lack of communication you should automatically go into sabotage mode because at that point it's just you against your crew. What are you actually trying to achieve without communicating? nothing! So might as well make it worthwhile

  • @kushdrifter Or you could be a decent person and just find another crew. I understand acting as a pirate against other crew, but you should not hinder your crew. Especially for self imposed reasons.

I thought that way until today I have been on SOT since the stream started this morning at like 9:30 or 10 EST I have not found ONE usable crew OR ONE communicating crew from the time I started this morning until the time we are chatting now at 4:54 p.m. EST. So the ONLY way to make the game enjoyable is to keep dropping anchor and chest on the people who are making my game time impossible.

Rode NT2-A that I have for music and voice work. Overkill for this, but I wanted to put some pitch shift and heavy reverb on my voice, stand on the Ferry in Athena garb, and greet people as they arrived in the underworld. Then I discovered pitching even further down and whistling made a really spooky sound, so I sometimes hide on ships and enjoy the “what the heck was that?!” responses. I keep thinking I’ll hook up one of the synthesizers and mess about but my partner is starting question all this stuff sitting in the gaming room with cables everywhere.
