Failure as an Option (PvE)

  • I have been thinking alot about this recently. Rare has made the game very accessable for crews of all sizes. This has unfortunately lead to some things being nerfed in the eyes of experienced players.

We understand that the Megaladon needs different behaviors and maybe needed to be kinder to small boats. The Kraken was tweaked and then made into a joke(sloop version for sure).

Skeletons have had their cannon accuracy nerfed, their EoR accuracy nerfed or outright removed.

The devils roar sniper volcanoes have also had their power stripped.

None of this is news to anyone. Experienced players have gotten better and content has been made easier. It is a vicious conundrum.

So I am not sure what needs to be done, but we need a challenge. A PvE threat that actually makes you sit up in your chair. Something that makes it so you have to be "all hands on deck."

Failure needs to be an option. There has to be a threat that can take everything away. Please Rare introduce a challenge, a threat, an advesary strong enough to give us a run for our gold and supplies.

    Thank you.

Other player crews have always been that number 1 threat that can take everything from you. I don't think the PVE threats were ever meant to be that or ever will be.

That being said, I didn't think the PVE threats needed to be nerfed. But I think Rare is trying to make the game more accessible to more people.

  • @little-squash I agree that PvP threats were always meant to be number 1, but PvE is barely number 2. I can tell you my crew would be a whole lot less bloodthirsty if we had a PvE threat that was fun and challenging.

    I just want a competent #2.

  • I cant agree more.
The pve threats in this game are a joke.
Sad times on the seas if u want a good challenge

  • Don’t forget about lightning. I want pre Festival of the Damned lightning back.

  • @br0crastinat0r you mean during, pre is the similar if not a 1% more chance of hitting than post.

  • @captain-coel agree, but instead of doing that I feel like they should separate players into different servers based on there reputation and depending on how good your rep is, the harder the compition is with enemies

  • ^ sorry meant competition ^

  • @thatzjdub reputation does not equal skill. Nor should we fracture the Adventure mode population.

  • @weststormborn to be fair it was way easier pre Festival, now I can sail through a storm and not get hit at all.

  • @captain-coel Honesy the devils roar was always an option and so I dont see why they ever nerfed it. It's your choice to sail there and they should add more hard areas that you must seek out. They can nerf or "balance" threats that come out of nowhere but nerfing threats you have to go to is kind of odd.

  • @weststormborn said in Failure as an Option (PvE):

Nah, we don't need the uptick in strikes, just more damage. IMO, a lightning strike should result in an instant-kill (against a pirate, not the ship), unless you're under cover - this would make travelling through the storm considerably more dangerous. It would also provide that "oh snap!" kind of moment...

  • @galactic-geek perhaps

  • @captain-coel I think to make things more challenging they need to have some bosses which aren’t just damage sponges.

Have enemies where you can only kill them a certain way, like by shooting a weak spot ect..

  • @captain-coel

    I would love that.

But what you and me consider challenging, other players will come to the forums and Reddit to complain non-stop about it until it's nerfed.

Unfortunately I don't think this will happen as long as so many people are demanding safety nets from the possibility of losing...

  • The biggest difference between ppl who want more nerfs (often non PL or PL10) and the ppl who want more challanges (PL or PL10).

    • The first group doesn't want to lose their loot and the majority wants PvE servers.
    • The second group see that the loot is not the main element in the game but the voyages / fun etc is. and don't mind the PvPvE in adventure and often welcome it.
  • @knifelife Love the idea of this, I just think it will create more calls for nerfing

Take the Kraken for example, and the tenecule wrap, its ok for us knowing to hit the smaller tent, but for a new person it can seem impossible to overcome.
I would love for more of this "inside" knowledge making its way into the game but I also feel it doesn't balance well with new people.

It's a hard one as people don't like learning from their mistakes

  • Agree with this post, pve is too easy. Solo'd a fort last night. Skeletons never fired upon me while on my ship. Ship was parked next to the island. Skeletons were directly below me and where they once fired at me from similar spots, now they never fired at all. Once the long range was taken care of the sword dealing skeletons were easily taken care of.
With no other ships contesting the fort, it was an easy win.

Skeleton ship then approached me at the fort. Fired few cannon balls hit them with a ballast ball; followed with a few more cannonballs; and it was done. They never fired a shot at my ship stocked with gunpowder kegs.

    PvE is definitely too easy.

  • Imagine if the lightning strike didn't just kill players in 1 strike.

Kraken tentacle wrapping the ship? Gone!
Meg about to bite your ship? Gone!
Pirate Lord about to wreck your crew? Gone!

It would make for some funny moments, for sure!

  • @badassfro Yeah I was thinking a bit more about it and I think they should have bosses like that which are for the more seasoned players.

I think the workaround could be instead of making them emergent threats in the world, you summon them like you did with the Meg from the hungering deep. That way say you have to collect some relics and place them somewhere in the world. You would need that information and game sense before you go and do it.

So I don’t think it would make the experiences of newer players harder, unless they decide to invest in the fight.

  • @knifelife Agreed gating them behind a summons would work, as long at that couldn't then be used as a weapon.

That being said I remembered thinking how cool it would be to get 5 people together to summon a Meg while being chased lol.

  • @badassfro Can we have a summonable huge Kraken please?

I just feel like I need to scream from the crows nest:
    ”RELEASE THE KRAKEN”
At a small fishing boat or something, because you know, everyone needs to brush there ego now and again 😂

  • @knifelife don't we summon the Kraken by defeating cloud events? She just doesn't follow orders well.

  • @d-jaguar Valid point! Now we can summon her, I just need to tame her..
