More cursed chests

  • I love the cursed chests. They add a whole new mechanics to transporting a chest. And I suggest adding some more. Here are some of my suggestions.

    Reapers Chest:
Once placed on a ship, you will be marked on the map with the reapers mark. You can't take away this mark unless you drop of the chest. Even a rowboat will be marked. Also works on skelleton ships, marking them as if they are reaper mark player ships.

    Chest of Burning Gold:
You will get damaged as long as you hold the chest. Transporting by hand means you will get a lot of damage and need to keep eating to refill your health. 5% damage per second. More common in the devils roar.

    Skelleton curse chest:
As long as you hold this chest all players look like skelletons and you will look like a gunpowderskelleton to them. Nametags become invisible. Team damage will be turned on as long as you hold it. Without communication your teammates will likely shoot you in confusion.

    Chest of the damned:
Every 30 seconds something on the ship will break. It can be holes, mast damage, steeringwheel or capstan. Can be used against skeleton ships, but as skeletons use planks it is way less effective then the chest of sorrows)

    Northstar chest:
All compasses nearby will point towards the chest instead of north. Making it impossible to navigate by compass, but the northstar will shine more brightly then normal and becomes visible in day even when cloudy. All other ships and players who sail near your ship will be affected as well. You need to find new treasure using the stars and navigate your ship using the map and communication.

  • We also need a chest that might run away when you dig it up... so you have to catch it before you can carry it to your ship. Same problem again at the outposts when you have to catch it again to turn it in.

There has been discussion about this before, but i thought id mention it again.

  • A chest that runs away? I imagine a chest with a crab design that has crab legs and that would be really funny.
But I think its technically hard to code for the devs as its a new AI that they have to make. And how do you make sure it doesn't walk of your ship? Would likely a bit too much for singleplayer sloop players.

  • As long as it doesn't get to the harpoons or ladders lol. It would have ahard time getting away if you stow it in the hold near the bow. Or they could just have it not wander off ledges. Stick it in the crow's nest lol.

I like the northstar chest idea too.

  • Wooow! Finally something really interesting in the forums! TOTALLY YES! haha thoose chest are so cool and sound totally mindblowing, it would add new and original mechanics! I hope Rare Staff check this post! I loved ur ideas in this one! I can imagine all the confussion on the boat with all those confussing mechanichs (like the skelly one and the compass)!! Somebody of the crew is gonna get hurt, definitely!!! HAHAHA
    10/10

    Yeeeehaaaa!!
Spread the curse in the seaaaaas!

  • I like the reaper chest idea really nailed it. As for the rest could use a little work. Burning gold and damned aren’t bad though

  • @andyxxpanda1290 If they could use some more work, then I would love to know how you think it would work better. If we can perfect these suggestions before Rare reads it, then there may be a higher chance they will consider them.

  • @musical-memoirs it’s just 2 chests. The north star chest and the skeleton chest.

North Star- as long as you know the map or use the map it should be easy. Most boats you can use the map and see it from the top tech making no communication really needed. If this chest were a thing you would need to black out the map entirely but that still wouldn’t be effective due to people knowing the map and or just looking for lights at an outpost.

Skeleton chest- I just don’t believe this one will work period I can’t think of any suggestions to make it better.

In the lore I believe there was a chest that lured krakens so why not have that. When in possession you get followed by kraken. It’s mentioned in one of captain falcores videos.

  • @andyxxpanda1290 Cursed chests don't have to make your adventure impossible. It just need to change it up a little. Not being able to use your compass is enough of a change to change your gameplay. If you're pro enough to be able to navigate without it then you can just be happy with your skills to cover the loss of one useful tool.

And why wouldn't the skelly one not work? Skeletons and human players have many coding simelarities. To the point that if a player fails to load you will already see that player as a skeleton. And to the point that skeletons can use every tool a human player can. As explained in one of my other suggestions. https://www.seaofthieves.com/forum/topic/95924/partying-skeletons-protecting-treasure

And yes, in the lore such a chest exists. But ever since the kraken started giving loot, it would be too easy to abuse. Better to keep that as a lore chest we cannot find.

  • im not saying it’s not possible to appear as a skeleton. Technically that’s an abusable chest as well. Hold onto it and appear as a skeleton. That chest may even be an advantage so you can hide and blend in more. If you see a skeleton on a player ship you could assume it’s a player making it useless unless you are on an island hiding. And hiding the name above a persons head permanently as long as they have the chest is also a huge advantage. People tuck and hide their name but it’s not permanent. I agree with 3 of the chests you thought of and they sound amazing I just don’t think those 2 are ideal. And of course there would be a cool down with the kraken chest but if somone can take out 5 krakens in a row without having time to resupply then they deserve all the loot they can get. It would be easy to do on a sloop for sure but a galleon 5 times in a row? I much rather see Skelton body parts or bodies as a pirate lore curse than a chest.

  • I liked the idea of blacking out the map for one of them. Hiding like a skeleton sounds fun too.

  • @br0crastinat0r The problem with blacking out the map is that inexperienced players become forced to use online map tools. Those map tools break a bit of the fun of the game as it removes the need to learn the layout of the world yourself.

  • @musical-memoirs weak! I still like the idea for one who know the Sea of Thieves.

  • I love this

  • I, too, have been thinking about this and was considering the fun of a "Night Eye" chest that would mostly blind you when carrying it, similar to a serpent's spit but worse. A totally blinding one would be cool but take more team effort.

Even having a curse where it blinds any who are on the ship (like cursed cannonballs) would be hard but interesting.

  • A long time ago, Rare teased a chest that would occasionally spawn a ghostly doppleganger of one of your crew, who had to be killed as if they were a player. If not dealt with, they would:

    Eat all your food
    raise/lower sails randomly
    lower anchor
turn the wheel a random direction
    Fire cannonballs randomly
    Ignite/Snuff the torches
    Drop the rowboat randomly
    etc.

I always thought that would've been awesome to see implemented in game... perhaps some of your ideas will make it in, because I think any new variety to the loot is a good idea, and the cursed chests seem to be a great spot for expansion.

  • @bactatankbill Hmm I guess they didn't implement this yet because it was likely quite hard to do. As that seems way harder to code then most of my suggestions.

  • @andyxxpanda1290 If you appear as a skelleton your likely to be killed by random players. So I don't think its that exploitable. Especially when people know this cursed chest would be a thing in the game.

I'm gonna look up the lore of that kraken luring chest to see if its logical to appear widespread and then add it to my list. I can think of a solution to make it less exploitable while still giving you krakens.

Everyone has their opinions what would work or not, but in the end it's the devs that decide on their potential application. So no harm to suggesting a lot of ideas.

This is my favorite one you've come up with. Seems like a more hardcore Chest of Sorrows!

    Northstar chest:

I would actually suggest a variation on this idea, called the Chest of Storms. A super high value chest that is only found on islands where a storm is overhead, and periodically throws your wheel and compass out of whack while on board, even under sunny skies.

  • The Chest of Storms was suggested a while ago, the suggestion then was that digging it up would cause a storm to form over the island and follow you as you tried to turn it in. This storm would be of a different different appearance to other storms with purple lightning. I added to this by suggesting a counter could be displayed on the chest that would show its value. All the time you were in deep water this counter would increase. So do you sell it straight away or try to ride out the storm for more money and hope no nobody tries to take it from you?

  • The skeleton curse chest could spawn random skeletons, this would happen until it was turned in. They would even appear on your ship as you tried to sail to the outpost.

  • Oh yes, please. I love them.

    Foggy chest:
There, where the chest is, is dense fog. Correctly dense fog.

    Deaf-mute's chest:
You can't hear anything in the surroundings of the chest.

    Chest of the wind:
This chest changes the wind directions faster than you can see.

    Chest of Darkness:
This chest makes you perceive the environment as if it were night.

  • @musical-memoirs that's the fun part it should jump off the ship 😅

  • Chest of the dammed should open
a second portal on the ferry that players can jump into then come out the chest 😅
