A Solution to the Gold Hoarder’s Curse Dilemma.

  • As many of you are aware, there is currently an ongoing debate/discussion in the community in regards to the Gold Hoarder’s Curse. Some people were dissatisfied with their curse/the RNG nature behind the curses themselves. Because of this, RARE decided to create a single, stagnant design for the Gold Hoarder’s Curse, which upset people who enjoyed the uniqueness of curses/their current curse. This is a problem because both side’s opinions are equally valid and important. Everyone who has the curse undertook the same LONG grind to acquire it. RARE your current plan of action won’t please everyone, in fact it will most likely lead to future dissatisfaction. People like different things, some people like more gold, others like less gold. Someone will always be dissatisfied with a stagnant design you give them because the amount of gold may be too much or too little. I implore you, please consider an alternative solution.

I believe there is a relatively easy solution that would make EVERY party involved happy with their curse. This idea was originally brought up by Zaannox (have to give credit where credit is due), I am simply expanding upon their initial post.

    The Random Curse Generator:

    • Upon completing all of the tall tales and acquiring the Gold Hoarder curse, players will be taken to a menu similar to the character creation menu at the start of the game.
    • This menu will depict said player’s character without any cosmetics on (so you can fully see the curse), and like the character creation menu, will show several randomly generated curses on said pirate.
    • The player is able to go through and view what randomly generate curses look on their pirate until they find one they like.
    • Players have the option to favorite curses they like while they continue to view randomly generated curses.
    • Once a player finds a curse variant they like, they can choose to keep said variant and that becomes their curse permanently.

(Please Note: The curses mentioned above would be completely RNG based, they would not be stagnant designs.)

Essentially, revamp the character creation menu to create randomly generated Gold Hoarder curses.

I feel like this would be the best solution to the situation at hand. Not only would a system like this make EVERY curse unique, it would allow players to have complete control over what their curse looks like. No one would ever feel dissatisfied because they are able to CHOOSE the exact look they want for their pirate. This would please every party involved, and I don’t see any downsides to a system like this. Everybody wins.

  • @exeternautical I appreciate that you mentioned me when you didn't have to :)

I like your expantion on the idea, I think this would be a great addition to the game! This idea really allows players to truly choose what type of curse they want.

  • like the idea.
But still think it should work like a Curse.
so depending on how much gold you have, the curse will spread.

can do the same with the OoS curse.

  • We need a megathread for this @Deckhands

  • Well i was dissapointed that Male characters are covered up so much and females dont
I wouldnt mind it beeing the same amount for both genders

Like everything else was so far.
But there so many ways to solve that, giving diffrent looking gold hoarder curses to everyone who made it
Like the other cosmetics one which less gold, one with a middle amount and one with much
but The exact same for each gender

  • Currently the gold hoarder's curse cosmetic is generated based on a random gold hoarder at any outpost. Similarly, the random tattoos we received were all pre-set appearances later given to us as cosmetic options. Why not just give the player all curse appearances to choose from, similar to when rare released all the tattoo sets at once?

  • @exeternautical, it would be cool to see it grow in relation to how much gold you have.

The downside would be that it would take Rare a very long time to figure out how to randomize the appearance of a texture. :P

so depending on how much gold you have, the curse will spread.

can do the same with the OoS curse.

OOS curse is not of the "Spreading corruption" variety.

The lore of the curse is that you performed a ritual, using kraken's ink, to try to "see beyond this world", and the consequence of doing that ritual is that you become blind because your eyes will be permanently drenched in kraken's ink, which causes the leaking effect.

The lore of the Gold hoarder curse is that you took a coin from the gold hoarder's treasure vault (or handled the gold hoarder coin, little bit confused about which one it is), and this slowly turns you into gold based on the greed in your heart... The curse is linked to the severity of ones own greed, meaning it can grow, or recede depending on your greed.

Not all curses spread, because not all curses share the same nature. Therefore the OOS curse shouldn't have any such function, because "spreading" is not in its nature.

Consider the OOS curse a scar from a wound you got doing something stupid.

And consider the GH curse more like an incurable disease you contracted.

Not remotely similar medical conditions, at all.

I believe you've misunderstood what a curse is, in the SoT universe.

"Currently the gold hoarder's curse cosmetic is generated based on a random gold hoarder at any outpost."

Your information is outdated... That's how it USED to work, not how it currently works.

It was actually a bug that it functioned like that, they fixed the bug, and now it looks the same for EVERYONE.

As for your suggestion, seeing 1 OoS curse, and then 14 duplicates of the Gold Hoarder curse is ugly and messy as hell and... Well let's just say if we make curses actual tattoo's, what's the point in having a tab dedicated exclusively to curses? Why not just make curses actual tattoo's?

There needs to be some inherent unique function or limitation to curses for them to deserve their own tab in the UI.

Why isn't there a date on comments on this forum? o_.
