Community Blacklist for Toxic Players?

  • Hey Everyone,

Is there a way for the community to get after these toxic players that just cuss people out while they are fighting?

I like to tell stories so if you want to bypass the buildup and get to the point then skip the next paragraph.

I'm a pve player and I was sailing yesterday minding my business when a brig started chasing me. Ok, no problem, I'm trying to get used to the pvp element. I sail past an outpost and jump off with some loot and turn it in, mermaid back and repeat for all my loot but one chest. Ok now I can engage and not really worry about losing stuff. They've been chasing me for almost 20 minutes and missed most of their cannon shots as I've been circling the outpost. Last mermaid back to my sloop I realize I didn't aim the ship well and it had crashed into some rocks. Went to repair so I didn't sink fully expecting them to be all over me. What I didn't expect was what they were saying. "Thought you could hide from us you flinging* beach*?" "This is my ship now you bunt*," over and over with lots of variations on the same words.

So aside from handing them a book and having them expand their vocabulary, what can we do about this because that just sucks. Could there be a community blacklist of names of toxic players? I know it won't affect the immediate but maybe if these players are trying to join a discord or something and the discord administrator checks the blacklist they could refuse them? Not sure if that would do anything to stop them but it's all I could think of.

  • In before "naming and shaming isnt allowed" and "fill out a support ticket".

  • @warrior576 Blacklisting isn't the way to go about things, this community is all about promoting and sharing positivity. If you encounter a player where there is a problem then the best thing to do is always report them to Microsoft or Rare.

  • @foxdodge well said

  • @NatiRedGals and @Foxdodge I had heard about reporting players for bad conduct but before sending something to the company and them possibly getting some kind of huge consequence (not sure what Microsoft or Rare does for this type of thing) I thought I would ask if there was something in place within the community first trying to solve it at the lowest level possible.

I hadn't thought about a shaming element and that wasn't my intention, it was more of some kind of way to avoid these players that can't say three words without some sort of expletive jammed in to attempt to add "emphasis".

  • @warrior576 the consequences are based on the offense. They can get a warning, temp ban, permanent ban or nothing at all. It is Rare that should punish and a public shame list isn't a good way to approach it.

Report them, I have sailed a lot and with a mild tolerance for swearing it usually isn't bad. There just some very rude people out there.

  • You could have recorded it and reported them on xbox live and they probably would have received 24 hour bans

Edit: there is a simple reporting function on xbox. Not sure about windows.

  • I never encounterd someone so toxic.. my worst experience is some guys boarding me while i got many chickens so i told them you win i cant fight the chickens dont like it.. then they killed me and sink the boat so i sail back and they are still there so i ignore them and start saving the chickens or they drown but then they killed the chickens -.- i just laughed those where the most pathetic pirates i ever seen so tough to wait and kill the animals like real losers xD so i got new chickens and continued me game :*)

  • Omg somebody call this guy a whambulance. I’ve found that people who complain & cry about others being toxic are usually the most toxic ones. We don’t need to try control people’s ability to free speech no matter how “toxic” when there are already dozens of features that you can utilize to only hear what you want to hear. Party chats, discord’s, you can even play music 🎶 through your Xbox & only hear your favorite songs if you so wanted.

Can you imagine any pro sporting event where competitors are facing off & Lebron James or someone says “wait, stop timeout refereeeee he said a naughty word to meeeee” I’m pretty sure pirates of any era were equally as competitive & spirited. They probably weren’t saying things like “that hat looks really good on you & I really like what you’ve done with your ship” as they were trying to rob & kill you.

  • They could add a censorship to open mic chat for ppl that dont wanna hear that frap* from others somewhere in the settings, but at least u know that they are just a** holes that suck enough at the game to take an approximate 20 mins. or more to finally catch you lol

Or you can mute external crews.

  • @admiral-greyjoy While I do appreciate your feedback and criticism of my experience/my asking for information, I can't help but be confused by your conflicting messages. In your post you are clearly being antagonistic and belittling but you also upvoted @Foxdodge when they stated:

How can you promote positivity and then speak so negatively in the same thread? I'm very confused.

@BloodyBil If I mute external crews then how will I find encouraging and positive people to play with like @Admiral-GreyJoy

  • I am open to this solution. Let's try it! This is a much bigger problem in the gaming community. People cussing online, yelling racist remarks, or threatening other players is unacceptable. Rare doesn't need those kind of pirates. If they want to keep a positive environment, then holding players accountable needs to be enforced more strictly. Oh and everyone using the free speech argument against this solution is silly. Free speech was never meant to protect toxic players verbal abuse.

  • @bloodybil or that yea lol

  • Its kinda like twitter and facebook. Are they a platform or a publisher?

If Microsoft is a platform, then you can say whatever you like, and no one should be able to complain(excluding incitement and call to action). If Microsoft is a publisher, they are entitled to censor/moderate/ban as they see fit(according to their code of conduct). As a publisher, they are also liable if something bad slips through the cracks, like swearing, racism, sexism, false call to action, etc etc.

Therefore, record the incident, pass it on to MS or rare, and they decide the outcome/punishment, not the community.

Edit: I just re-read that...sorry for being so boring:)

"Free speech" is what you're owed by the government in public spaces. You don't have that in a game's voice channel. The company has the right to mute or ban you for any reason, including they may just not like the sound of your voice cracking over the microphone.

They probably weren’t saying things like “that hat looks really good on you & I really like what you’ve done with your ship” as they were trying to rob & kill you.

You're not a pirate, nor are the people on the other end. Take some responsibility.

This is not an accurate explanation. The referenced law doesn't relate to moderating behavior in voice chat over a video game. The immunization provided by section 230 distinctions is not impacted by common editorial behavior to keep a platform within its terms of service.

You can look up the Communications Decency Act of 1996 and read it, or just find a decent explainer online. The most common source of misinformation about section 230 immunization are people whining when their terrible behavior is addressed by a service of some kind. Find better sources. :)

  • Carebear....
Remember when banter was a way of making new friends?
Now these kids get offended over anything they hear in the internet.

    Sad.

    Just mute them, next time.
    Or talk back.

Now watch me get censored for having a different opinion.

  • @xixaxap
    Sure

  • Maybe these Pirates wanted to have a server on their own for all kinds of reasons...But conquering or acquiring a server on this way is the wrong way...Some people have forgotten how to communicate in a normal way...
They are sitting in their sofa , or desk , hiding behind their gamertag and spew out whatever sludgeword comes into them because banning ...hah...does that happen so much? i doubt it.
Best thing to do is like you did , cash in , take them on a long journey and when they finally catch you , then jump to a new game...There is no need to talk back and lower yourself to that kind of level and those words , well, dust them off like dust on yer sleeve and walk on....
There will always be people that think they are untouchable ,but ask yourself this question: " Would they use the same words if they were standing eye to eye with you ?" , If it's a 4 to 1 situation , they maybe would but in a one to one situation i'm pretty sure they would bow down their eyes and seek for the closest corner to hide like a stepped upon chihuahua....Remember that the dog who barks loudest has the most fear running through it's veins....

And a Blacklist...Well, i do believe that sometimes if you can withstand the first defensive outlashes of persons , because some have been trolled upon before and strike first in the hope to shut others before they start , then you would see that some are not bad at all...Internet communication mostly starts with a lot of suspicion , a strike first before striked upon mentality , but many use it as a defensive facade that quickly melts away if you don't let yerself baited and take the first few "verbal punches " on the chin without retaliating....If i would have resentment or hatred towards persons that attack me first but after a while keep quiet or start to talk normally , then my Heart would have been pitchblack....

No, a Blacklist won't help....How many Pirates are not connected to a wellmeaning Fleet but still often lose their pedals when they hear a strange or foreign voice ....Because if you think that there are only GoodHearted Pirates in all those renown Fleets on this Forum, then i fear you may walk upon a few that may have enlisted when they had a blue monday....Try a weird sounding voice or try to mimic an accent other than the most used languages in the game and you will hear for yourself what i mean....
