Why are they starting to sell voyages with doubloons?

  • There is no consistent way of getting Doubloons which I find annoying. If you want to make Doubloons a way to buy voyages that is fair enough, maybe a gold alternative, I wouldn't mind paying 100, 000 gold as long as the risk is worth the reward. I also would not mind a more consistent way of getting them either.

  • @itz-the-aj Ahoy there!

Joe talked about in today's Dev Update that those of us who regularly participate in the Insider (revamped Pioneer Program) Program will be able to earn gold, doubloons, and exclusive cosmetics for their time and feedback. This implies to me that Rare has a few ideas up their sleeves on how to implement more ways for us to earn more doubloons.

Take a look at what he said specifically in regards to Insider rewards (it starts at 2:46):

    Hope that helps!

  • Because they are Duke's is my guess.
The voyage cost is low, easily obtainable for new players by lighting their lantern a couple times.

The zero sum implementation for the bilge rat adventures worked in that closed loop, those that did the adventure, got the doubloons and then could get the limited time cosmetics.

When they then added other expendables, the levels and gold, players would have to choose between the cosmetics and the infusions. Then they added doubloons to the commendations so you could afford both. You can earn them from previous campaigns.

While they are a finite resource, every update increases the amount earned from commendations. So if you are not spending them on the gold or levels, even with purchasing every cosmetic from Duke, you have a lot left over.

I am not sure these will result in a gain or a loss due to their initial costs after the ship livery is purchased.

  • @itz-the-aj I got 500 right now and don't know what to do with them, so I have no trouble paying 5 doubloons for a voyage.

Because people are beginning to stockpile doubloons, so they need a doubloon-sink for you to waste them on... welcome to gaming.

  • There are so many commendations for earning dubloons that you could earn far more than you need to buy unlocked cosmetics as long as you are not buying gold and levels with them.

  • My least favourite decision. Especially regarding a commendation needing doubloons spent 5 times to earn.

  • @tre-oni
That's 25 Doubloons you have to spend to get the commendation.
And let's not forget about failed Attempts as well.

  • @sgt-palooggoo yep yep. Its kinda goofy.

  • @je0rgie-p0rgie

I would have appreciated it if people that have done a certain amount of useful bug reports via the ticket system were included in this reward system.
I started playing last month and when I find a problem in the game it's my go-to process to submit a ticket and provide as much informations as I can, including how to reproduce it and when applicable, add screenshots.

You can read about the change which enables doubloons, commendations and titles being still available after events here, while there's been a small gap over Christmas it seems as if there will more regular opportunities to earn doubloons going forward as well as from past events :-

Yay, more exclusive cosmetics in a game that doesn't have enough stuff to buy in the main game. facepalm.gif

You are an edge case, and talking about it in the manner you did really isn't helpful.

By far, MOST folks, this is a very finite resource.

Guess it should be somewhat limited, or everyone will be buying half the levels to 50 with doubloons. As long as you get back enough doubloons to buy the current cosmetics plus a little extra, I think it is fine.

Yep totally agree... it has to be limited. Otherwise, it does't feel special to achieve!

The balance though that will be difficult for Rare to strike will be "how much playtime to put in to earn them (multiplied by the time you spend being sunk :), vs. the time available for the event" to still make them still feel special and an accomplishment, without leaving too many playtime-starved folks out in the cold time after time.

You know everyone can do the events and earn the event exclusives right? Its part of the main game. If you just don't do them, its your fault.

Sorry the game doesn't hand you a trophy every time you want one for doing nothing?

What are the doubloon costs of the ship livery for anyone who has already unlocked it?
    I assume its 30 each?
Trying to calculate what I need/can spend.

I think 15 30 5 or something like that. It ends up totaling 50.

I know the flag was 5.

I can't go back and check anymore lol bought the stuff already

  • @tre-oni

So every player that signs up for the insider program will be accepted?

I don’t want something for nothing I want to be able to earn my stuff in game same as everyone else, but there’s a pitiful selection of stuff available in the game and they continually throw out these exclusives while adding sod all else to the main set of cosmetics permanently available in fame. Which in a game with only cosmetic progression is an absolute joke

Apparently everyone who applies gets in, and to incentivize keeping to an NDA and actually provide reports, and basically do the job you're supposed to do as pioneer you'll be rewarded with doubloons and the like for actually helping out.

  • @itz-the-aj Hi there, let's assume you are buying all the voyages by your self without splitting the cost with crew mates you will need 7 voyages (5x7=35 doublones) to complete all the commendations that will give you back 90 of them, so you will end up with a +55. Now i did not check how mutch will cost the new cosmetic but i will gamble is equal or less then 55 in total. I don't see any problem in paying 5 for a voyage.

  • @fluidsc I can understand that, but an alternative option for people with no doubloons would be nice

I would love to see Rare add more ship cosmetics to the game because frankly, they're my favorite thing to collect. I agree that Rare should periodically add more cosmetics to the game for players to purchase from the shipwrights. I think it'd be cool to see some more expensive and extravagantly designed sets that players could purchase for a large portion of gold.

While I understand the frustration you have for the lack of new purchasable (with gold) cosmetics I think Rare is using the rewards program to entice players to participate in the Insider Program. Sure, seeing new content before it's released and getting your voice heard about how that content operates is an awesome experience but having a few rewards helps motivate people to participate even more and I think that's what this is all about. The more people testing, the higher quality the patch, the smoother the launch day.

  • I feel like some exclusive items are acceptable from time to time, but I also think Rare should focus more on adding a ton of cosmetics (bought with gold) to the main game.

  • @itz-the-aj What! I have 738 doubloons!

  • I get the risk/reward idea, but it doesn't work correctly because the supply of dubloons is limited and finite.

That leads to ridiculous situations where I bought a voyage for 5 dubloons, the game crashed before I could finish it, and now I have to spend another 5 dubloons just to hopefully break even by getting 10! No advantage to me for having completed the voyage, and I would have been better off just doing something else to earn dubloons instead.

Gold is infinite in supply and has consequently makes far more sense to use as a currency that can be 'lost' in this way. The new voyages should have a high gold cost, in the thousands or tens of thousands depending on the rewards and how often Rare anticipate we should be re-playing them, so that if players have to go offline for whatever reason they aren't throwing away a limited resource.

Or what happened to me a moment ago. Disconnects!

  • I feel like people complaining that there aren't enough ways to earn Doubloons spent all of theirs on buying pirate legend. That was their choice to spend everything they had to take a short cut to pirate legend. I personally did not purchase any levels and have over 800. Not to mention if you purchase the quest for 5 doubloons they award 10....so not seeing the real point of people complaining. Completing Duke's 3 current quests and achieving all available achievements, playing solo, you would spend 35 doubloons to purchase quests. After completing them all you would be awarded 70 doubloons total. Then it is again your choice to spend awarded doubloons on the new ship/sails/flag skin or not.

  • Dabloons are plentiful as long as you haven’t wasted them on gold or reputation.

The other solution is teaching your kids to play and having them purchase the voyages from duke. They may whine, but you save your Dabloons haha

I hit PL before doubloons existed and I think spending doubloons on voyages to earn doubloons is dumb

nope. i spent it all on exclusive limited time cosmetics. I did miss out on a lot of dubloons because I often play solo and so don't complete all the items in time before event is over. I did buy one level each though to see how the process worked.

If you want expensive, try to collect the Scurvy Bilge Rat one. Very expensive stuff there.

  • @itz-the-aj
I suggest doing the Forsaken Shores challenges to earn doubloons! They are fairly easy and they don’t take too long.
Also, I agree and think buying doubloons would be a great addition. On the other hand, then people could buy those doubloons to earn more reputation, instead of earning it.

  • @lucky-13-x I've got every ship cosmetic, minus the one's that are reserved for specific groups, except for half of the Legend set and all of the Ghost set. Sadly I haven't had a chance to get out and plunder as much as I'd like with my semester wrapping up and finals happening :\ but soon I shall have them all!

I really only have very few of the Shrouded Spoils left. I have almost all of the others besides kill 200 skeletons with cursed cannonballs. The ones I have left rely on me lucking out in game like finding a kraken or the Shrouded Ghost shark.
