one of the main reasons I stopped playing SOT was my hate for cursed cannonballs. I thought they were pointless and stupid and ruined the game. I was wondering if they are still a thing.

Yup!
They are still a thing... but a lot less common than they were at launch, plus used a lot less than they were before.
@evil-wolf-snipe Like @Musicmee said I’ve found them to be quite the rarity to be honest. Very rarely get a stockpile of them like you used to.
@evil-wolf-snipe AI skeleton ships seem to have an infinite supply of them and those ships will randomly spawn on you more often than not. Players hardly use them anymore though.

Sheesh, strong opinions.
Regardless, I think you'll be happy to know that the spawn rate of cursed cannonballs was significantly toned down; finding dozens of them at a time was just a product of the event linked to their introduction, just like the spawn rate of sharks was increased as a teaser for The Hungering Deep.
Though, Skeleton Ships now roam the seas on their own, and can spawn on unsuspecting players. They still use plenty of Cursed Cannonballs, but they're also much easier to take down than their event counterparts.
Really, IMO you got worked up over nothing. When someone uses a CCB, it's more of an event now; you think to yourself "Curses! They had an Anchorball!" And then you move on your merry way.
@evil-wolf-snipe Yeh I've noticed they are harder to find now but personally I do love them. Especially if you are a 2 man sloop up against a Galleon.
@evil-wolf-snipe yes, I remember when they came out no one was excited but honestly they have become a very welcome addition to the game due to their semi rare nature and availability on a per session basis.
