Devil's Roar Lore & Speculation - Let me tell ye a secret

  • Ahoy maties!

The Forsaken Shores update introduced in the game this huge area called The Devil's Roar and it is full of lore. As it can be difficult to put the pieces together under the volcanoes, I thought it was interesting to gather all these elements in a thread to be able to discuss and confront our ideas safely.

    Forsaken Shores

    The story behind Devil's Roar

Grace, or Captain's Morrow, was the leader of the Forsaken Shores Alliance. They had a charmed figurehead that allowed them to sail through The Devil's Shroud and to arrive safely in this new area much hotter than the last where they were. They reached an accord and named it The Devil's Roar. Even if those lands were inhospitable, they explored it for months in search of riches and with the intention of settling there one day.

Nevertheless, Jim Stitcher, following orders from his secret friend, plotted to stab them in the back. It turns out Jim's master was the first Gold Hoarder and was looking for a Box of Wondrous Secrets, something very rare and that has the power to corrupt crews. When the Alliance found it, Jim betrayed them and tried to kill everyone. However, the poison wasn't strong enough to kill Grace who has already drunk worst than that.

Grace chased Jim out of the area but unfortunately her ship, the Shroudbreaker, was smashed in a storm and got wrecked.

    ShroudBreaker

Alone, she learned how to survive the volcanoes and giant sharks that roam the area. She almost ended up in the belly of Redmaw, the biggest and most dangerous of them. Then there was the merfolk incident but Grace married their prince and things got smoothed over. After that, The Ferry of the Damned appeared and she spent decades in service of the Ferryman. Several years flew by during the invasion of the crabs but Grace took down Lord Pinch.

The figurehead fragments drifted through the Shroud and dispelled it completely. As Pirates are now able to sail safely towards The Devil's Roar without the charmed figurehead, Grace decided to stay there to keep the place safe from Jim. Even if she miss her home, The Wilds, she said it's her duty to protect The Roar.

    Jim

In the mean time, while everyone was scrabbling to explore The Devil's Roar, Jim was digging up his old stash, The Box of Wonderous Secrets. His plans are already in motion and he's now resting on Liar's Backbone.

    The Original Gold Hoarder

The Gold Hoarders are one of the three Trading Companies in the Sea of Thieves but they are tied with one of the terrifying Skeleton Lords, the original Gold Hoarder. The latter has a love of treasure so strong, it drives him even after death. His l**t for wealth has led him to replace parts of his own decayed body with his most precious riches.

    Gold Hoarder

Jim, who wears the Gold Hoarders tattoo, was sent by this Skeleton Lord to bring back a Box of Wondrous Secrets. Unfortunately, Hyde, the Gold Hoarder of Morrow's Peak Outpost, declined to give us more information about their acolyte. However, Stitcher told us that he actually owns a Box and his plans are still in motion. The Gold Hoarder will probably manage to get his hands on it, but for what purpose?

    Box of Wondrous Secrets

Grace thinks this Box has the power to create or break a curse. As a reminder, the Gold Hoarder is cursed, so does he want to get out of it? Or does he want to spread this curse? If you find one, be careful, it's still unclear what dangerous secrets it may contains. In any case this box seems to push their holder in their madness.

I guess it's something we will find out very soon.

    Redmaw

    Megalodon

Grace reveals that she fought a big shark she called Redmaw in her diary found on Ashen Reaches. If you remember our dear friend Merrick, this one told us where to face the Hungering One, just below Devil's Ridge on the border of the Devil's Shroud.

Now, if you look on the map you will see that this place is weirdly between Devil's Ridge and Ashen Reaches. Could the Hungering One be Redmaw? Grace and Merrick could possibly know each other.

    The Merfolk

The mermaids are very interesting creatures but were so far only tales and, even if they were there, they have since departed, most likely spooked by the Devil's Shroud.

    Merfolk

However, Grace reveals something that proves their existence. It seems that there was an incident with them and weren't so friendly, but Grace smoothed things over. She got married with their prince, probably in return for their departure. However, problems with the Devil's Shroud lately could change things and one can wonder if the southwestern lands of the Sea of Thieves known for their famous Merfolk paintings might see their return?

    The Pirate Lord

I think that all good sailor knows this legendary pirate whose tales tell that he would be one of the first to discover the Sea of Thieves. At least, he's a figure that dominates many tall tales if he's not the most renowned.

    Pirate Lord

Nowadays, he can be found in the Athena's Fortune Hideout, or at least his ghost. He's now dead but Grace, Jim and Ruby seemed to know him very well when they were kids.

In any case, we could learn more about his stories with the imminent release of Athena's Fortune Paperback and the future expansion of Athena's Fortune in the game.

The Ferryman and the Ferry of the Damned

    Ferry

The Ferryman is the one who provides mercy and rescues the pirates deceased from the Sea of the Damned. In his diary, referring to the arrival of the Ferry of the Damned, Grace tells us that their discovery of the Devil's Roar goes back a long time ago. As the Ferryman wasn't already there at this time, her friends couldn't be rescued.

Could the deceased members of the Forsaken Shores Alliance be lost in the Sea of the Damned?

    Sea of the Damned

Also, this spooky region has already been explored by Rare where players could somehow be able to sail their ship there. The Ferry of the Damned and its region could be extended in a future update.

    Lord Pinch and the Crabs

    crabs

Apart from the paintings of crabs found on the islands of the South of the Sea of Thieves, those little creatures are very mysterious. But Grace confirmed their existence with Lord Pinch, the huge crab she defeated. There was also this invasion of crabs but they have completely disappeared since. But you can still find a crab trap on Golden Sands and Morrow's Peak outposts.

    Their return is perhaps feared?

    Wild life

    Boars

This area has still many secrets. Apart from bats, there are no animals but wild boars seem to have lived in this region or even be fierce threats to the inhabitants as one can find many totems and skeletons on these islands and even paintings of them on Devil's Ridge.

    Kraken

The Kraken has obviously not escaped to this region and has probably the most beautiful cave of the Devil's Roar. However, another monster seems to have roamed these lands as well. Brave pirates can find its skeleton at the foot of Fetcher's Rest Volcano.

    Monster

While I look forward to read what everyone thinks, remember me maties,

That's a great article, I love my lore!
I doff my cap, thank you Sir!

  • @skulliah Well put together!

  • @skulliah ... what can I say?

    awesome topic!

It's nice to see all of the lore n one place for folk to read and catch-up on!

  • Love this!!

There were a couple bits I hadn't discovered yet.

  • @skulliah LOVE IT

  • @skulliah love this.
    Keep it coming!!!

This comes in agreement with some of my own speculations as well.
Is good to see people think over things.

  • Thank you maties!

However, there is something that I have not explored, that is what Grace drank and which was worse than Jim's poison. The only thing I can think about is the cursed chalice that Flameheart found with his crew. The liquid they drank from it turned everyone into a skeleton. Flameheart was the only survivor and is considered as another Skeleton Lord now.

Would Grace have tasted it, too? But she's not a skeleton tho.

  • @skulliah You lost me at married the mermaid prince.

I think she is implying that she has imbibed stronger, more potent substances when trying to get drunk than the poison Jim gave her.
I would take it as an implication that she can drink ANY sailor under the table!

  • @skulliah hum. Humm. And maybe that calice appearing in the FS trailer is the one Jim used to poison Grace?

But I don't think it's the same Flameheart drunk.
Grace has no indicators of skeleton on herself.

That cup he dunk must had the same components his cannons has thought... Remember Wanda and Salty, they only touched it and turned into skeletons.

That's more likely what she meant haha :)

She just wants to challenge us...

I don't think the poison Jim made her drink was from Flameheart's chalice. But she said that she's already drunk worse than this poison, so I was just wondering if she could have found Flameheart's chalice as well.

But yes, she's not a skeleton like Wanda and Salty. However, Grace holds Box of Wondrous Secrets that would have the ability to break the curses... :P

  • @skulliah

However, Grace holds Box of Wondrous Secrets that would have the ability to break the curses... :P

    Well put indeed. 🤔

And that's the reason why Jim is trying to get that box to his master. To break his curse...

So this way, yes, she could be a skeleton once, or begun to transform but that box prevent the curse to be completed.

Let's not forget she used to work with the ferry of the Damned. She may know something more about curses.

Wait.. another thing.. I just remembered where Flameheart lost his mind... Was in an island after loosing his ship in the Devils shroud.. so that calice could definitely be the same if the land Flameheart and his crew gave ashore was in the Devils roar.

I think he already has a Box and he's waiting to be able to give it to the Gold Hoarder because he says he hid it and his plans are still in motion.

And oh yay, Jim is not the only one older than he looks. Grace probably hides dark secrets too :D

Exact, The Silver Blade got wrecked in the Devil's Shroud and Flameheart and his crew stranded on an island. I think it's where they found the Kraken chest also. The chalice was found in a cave and was completely in gold if I remember. But I don't think this island was in the Devil's Roar :)

  • @skulliah yep I don't think it's the same either. Just trying to get together all the choices.

Hope to know more about this grace . She's a thought one.
But something we need to have in mind around here is not everyone is what they look to be, right?

Again, awesome job around this lore.

  • @nunoazuldimeter Never trust a Pirate!

  • Good read there Captain!
I have a theory on Stitcher Jim:
I think he's the devil himself, cause Morrow said that he's alot older than he looks, and who's else is really old the Devil!
Not to mention a Trader on one of the sea posts in the Devil's Roar talks about Lucifur!

    He's even invincible too!
I tried doing Morrow's work for her but well... something else happened.

  • aye cheers drinks rum and grog

  • @Skulliah Very nice! So quick question: Can you just find the box of secrets randomly?

One more thing: One of the vendors on a Shores of Plenty outpost (not sure which one) talks about him remembering you and a friend working with the Gold Hoarders in creating a new chest. Interesting...

  • Well done matey!!!

  • This is exceptional work! Well done!

One correction, though: that skeleton is a kraken skeleton. These can be found in other parts of SoT and have been there since Beta at least. The skulls match up with the art designs for the kraken and its been widely accepted that these are kraken skulls.

  • I would love it if this story became so clear during the game. Unfortunately this doesn't happen and we have to read about it in a forum. Anyway, or just because of that, thank you so much for your story.

  • @sgt-palooggoo "older then he looks" this is likely just a reference to the weird nature of time in the SOT. It's already been like 30 years in game time, since it launched. And if Morrow knew The Pirate Lord when he was alive, the Forsaken Shores Alliance probably went out into the shroud sometime ago.

  • @skulliah
awesome speculation, is it possible Red Maw could actually be the Shadowmaw? it does have similar qualities and color scheme to something that would be ashen variant. also i’m praying that they add Lord Pinch as a sea monster to fight in the future.

    Thank you matey!

Many things have changed since Forsaken Shores and Athena's Fortune book have been released!

Although Shrouded Spoils update has brought different species of Megalodon, we don't have more information about where they come from. It's hard to know which species was Red Maw but maybe we'll have more information later? I think Grace still has a lot to tell and Red Maw is probably a lovely mythical creature like The Hungering One, Old Mother or Lord Pinch...

I will leave the choice to the @Quartermasters if this thread should be closed, don't hesitate to open a new discussion, I would be happy to participate! That being said, with the next big update coming in one month, I look forward to write a new lore and speculation thread with all the informations I gathered and connect all the stories together! :D

  • @Deckhands, a foul necromancer has raised this thread from Davy Jones' locker.

  • @blam320 they have indeed. I’ll lock it for now as it is indeed a necroed post, but perhaps @Skulliah can link back to it when he posts his new thread after the mega update arrives :D
