Doubloon Currency - Developer Update

  • Thanks for the calcification. I think it will be a good change honestly.

  • I have purchased my dabloons with my cash to support this game and get things I actually want...I dont want to spend them on what commemorative reskins your putting out...I want a freaking refund then and I will stop purchasing the plunder pass too...this is total BS. You really do not understand your players and their wants!!!

  • What concerns me the most isn’t the wipe of collected doubloons or the return of cosmetics which were (multiple times) announced to be time-limited. Thats just Rares‘ usual disrespect for dedicated players‘ time. After playing this game for nearly eight years now, I got used it.

This decision is - at least in my opinion - yet another proof that the team have no idea what to do with this game or how to handle it properly. They obviously didn’t have any reliable long-term plan when they first introduced doubloons and I’m almost sure they don’t know what to do with them when they are running out of ideas for the new black market (why did it even got shut down in the first place?).

It reminds me a lot of the captaincy release: introducing a mechanism to track commendations 4 years after launching the game just shows that they haven’t put any deep thought into the whole situation. The same applies for a lot of other game-mechanics they’ve introduced over the years like skull of siren song or the quest board. Basically good ideas which were brought in to slowly die. Because there were no deep thoughts put into and no long-time-plan made for them.

Now I know, complaining is the easy part and - believe it or not - I really don’t want to be that guy. Judging from their videos and posts, the developers seem to be nice guys.

… but I have lost all confidence in them. I don’t think this team will lead SoT to a bright future. Maybe they‘ve lost passion for the project over time or maybe they are overworked due to other projects. I don’t know. But I‘m certain they do not have a clear vision for this game.

  • Reset gold and use gold to purchase items, as designed.

  • @sonicbob
"These items will be priced highly, aimed as recognition purchases for those dedicated players who have spent time amassing a Doubloon fortune."

This part is the part I'm worried about. I've been playing since 2019 and have had hoards of doubloons with nothing to spend them on other then gold. I've also been a collector of time limited things, especially ones that are achieveable that appear to be truly exclusive time-limited items. I only have about 5k doubloons right now, and I've seen others in the exact same spot in these replies who've been playing long periods of time and being those true dedicated players who've racked up hoards of doubloons, but not longer have such hoard because we didn't expect this even a month ago. I don't think it would be fair for players such as us to be told doubloons are going away, and the only way to get the commemorative items is to have tens or even hundreds of thousands in doubloons. I hope these items don't cost thousands each, it just simply would not be a fair deal.

  • @sonicbob said in Doubloon Currency - Developer Update:

For players wanting to bag themselves one of these commemorative items, they will remain available for a whole month, so there's still a chance to earn some Doubloons and grab one before they go.

An entire month to earn doubloons and grab ONE?
...These are going to be very, very expensive aren't they?

  • @fred-fisheye Honestly at this point most people would not even care if they bring back every time-limited cosmetics. I own most of them and I woun't not even be mad if someone - in complete legit way - grinded his butt to get 100k doubloons to buy Fashionista Gloves or Black Dog set or something equaly super unique. How many people would even do it 5? Yea... world would end after that.
We got proven many times for years "time-limited" only exist when Rare want's to highlight some event and then they forget they say that. Only thing that matter at the end of the day is gameplay and Black Market doesn't change it.
Im on the oposite spectrum of this Black Market return - bring all the items with assurance all the ways of getting doubloons were and will be legit. If you really really wanna keep stuff like mementos, keep the PL plunder pass items to keep the income in. Reality is Rare do not have profit from 3rd party item selling and this should disapear once for all. Wanna do big moves, do them fully or not at all.

Also we launched this game on many platforms and a lot of people didn't have even ways to obtain those items at time.

  • @hegemon3 please no, seasonal resets would be awful. Please go back to arc raiders with that idea.

You can't buy doubloons with cash.

  • @loktai1917

Exactly. Rare seems to think there are only 2 categories of players: new players or veteran who have limitless stock of doubloons.

There are also long time players who missed a season or 2 who had to spend 20-30+k doubloons (I even made a spreadsheet to keep track of how much I had to farm) to get the missing season rewards. I have been farming and spending doubloons for the past few seasons just to get the rewards from 1 missing season (I'm not even done yet). This means I barely have any doubloons in stock, but have millions of gold with nothing to do with it. Therefore I will miss the time-limited doubloon rewards just because I chose to engage with the current economy.

  • I'm glad you took that decision, even though I'm a bit sad because if I knew you were going to do this, I would have saved my doublons for the commemorative items instead of spending them all quite recently.

I was wondering if the ancient cosmetics of season 12, 13 etc will be all buyable at the black market ? Or will they appear for gold in the outposts?
As someone who missed those two seasons, I was really excited to buy the usual returning cosmetics next seasons (especially the haircuts). If they return in the black market I hope they won't be too expensive, because a sole month to purchase items before they change, giving that there will only be a weekend per month to earn proper amounts of dubloons, seems a little short in time and makes me a little nervous. I hope it won't be a new FOMO thing. Maybe try to make such items reappear in the black market regularly?

That said, the idea is great and I hope it will work smoothly

  • @hellcat-kate241 you purchased doubloons ? you mean ancient coins. ancient coins is what you can spend real world money on not doubloons

  • @elfy-raven
The only things from Passes that were said to never make a return are:
Season themed Sails, Flags, Tattoos, Scars, Makeups and Titles.

Yes but they were only speaking of seasons.
I also hope theyll realease a list of returning cosmetics from the Bilgerats soon.

  • You know when you go on a long stack voyage and then right at the last minute you get mega-kegged and lose everything but the crew that did it offer you some sort of consolation like you can have the gems, that you don’t want either.

What we’ve been on is an eight year voyage from day one for the devs to take everything and offer something we don’t want.

    We’ll played, kids crying now.

    wipes tears

  • @dermasterbob

they originally said those items where time limited never to return in order too respect players time invested back in the rough early days

they already said in the video that f.i. Bonecrusher stuff that previously fell under this will be returning.

  • @callmebackdraft
They did but that cant be all.
The bonecrusher stuff returns, because we already own parts of it.
If thats the rule, then Wailing Barnacle, Mercenary and Forsaken Ashes could also return.

  • @jumperovsky That stuff is gonna be available for gold after, and you can turn your doubloons into gold

  • I sea what yer up to it's obvious yer trying to annoy yer really dedicated pirates. To make that easier just reset all pirates to the point that they have to choose a new pirate with zero gold and none of their cosmetics. that should have the effect yer looking for.

To what exactly is your reply? Please quote or talk more clearly about the topic. I didn't say anything about gold transfer in this post.

  • Amazing rewards!!!!!!!!

    no.

  • I'm sorry, but this still isn't a great solution, especially since it only gives players a month to spend their doubloons (or finish commendation to unlock doubloons before their economy is changed). I love the idea of taking a new look at doubloons and trying to hearken back to the early Bilge Rat days and its Black Market, I played during those first few updates and that chase for doubloons was something special, but taking away the time that people have put in to earn doubloons (even if it's converted to gold) is really frustrating. Especially since a part of those early Bilge Rat Days was looking at my doubloon count, looking at the current items, and making the choice to save them for something better (like I chose not to get the Figurehead of the Wailing Barnacle and saved my doubloons further), not to mention old commendations being wasted for people who already achieved them and now starting from scratch, where new players already have those opportunities (assuming commendations are also staying).

  • I like @Dorgi3‘s idea of basing the “exclusive new commemorative Doubloon-themed” items on a player’s lifetime doubloons earned value instead of their current doubloon count. I can’t even begin to imagine how many doubloons I converted into gold just because there was nothing else to do with them. Not to mention having purchased all the Lucky Hand items for doubloons which, if I knew this was coming, I wouldn’t have because now I feel like I’m going to be woefully short on being able to purchase all the exclusive items.

And, if you’re going to automatically award the items to players if they don’t log in, why even make us purchase them? Why not just say if you’ve earned x doubloons during your pirating career, you’ll find y in your inventory when you next log in after the reset.

I feel like this is yet another punishment aimed at veteran players. The slight feels very similar to when they reduced the number of weeks to complete the Insider Programme from 116 to 66 and could have recognize the players who did it “the hard way” with something as simple as an exclusive trinket but chose not to.

  • March 19th
    Shop opens

    April 16th
    Reset day

That all I need to know.

  • "They're gonna cost a lot" meaning that they will ONLY be affordable by players who used nonstandard gameplay methods to get them (Alliance servers or exploits) or have been playing since before season 1 and therefore have NEVER had anything to spend doubloons on. This also negatively affects players like me who took MONTHS to build up a few thousand, which I spent the day before you announced the reset.

Money is a number that we use to represent stored time or stored work. PLAYERS ALREADY DID THE WORK for their doubloons. Taking those doubloons away mean invalidating the work they put in to get them. Invalidating the work they put in to get them means that players will expect in the future that you will invalidate more of their work and instead of doing more work they'll just play a different game that won't be abusive to them. This is an abusive relationship. You are stealing our storage of time/work. The point of having a huge account is to be able to afford things, that's the point of front loading all the work.

  • the massive disparity in wallets meant that we would be unable to price items in the Black Market that would allow everyone to participate, earn and enjoy the rewards.>
Pricing these new items to accommodate our veteran players’ Doubloon stashes would effectively lock this set of rewards out from the vast majority of both active players and any players that join Sea of Thieves in the future.>

Why does the disparity in Doubloon wallets have to be a factor in pricing of cosmetics?

Price the items like you have for the past several years on returning items from the Season Pass. Those with larger wallets can buy those items immediately. Those who don't have the doubloons have something to work towards.

The issue is that there hasn't been much of anything to spend the Doubloons on for the past several years which is why the disparity exists in the first place. The second reason is that those who have large wallets are playing more and have been playing longer. The wallets are so large because we didn't miss any Season Pass content and have everything.

I don't see why the Doubloons need to be reset to account for larger wallets. Does it really matter that someone can purchase everything right away versus someone that has to spend several months or longer to be able to get everything? WHY not start dumping unreleased items in batches every month and give us a reason to spend our doubloons? Throw in some lower priced items so those with smaller wallets can buy something every month and not feel left out.

THIS DOESN'T STOP WALLETS FROM GROWING AGAIN:

Those who keep playing and play often will regrow their Doubloon wallets. The scarcity of Doubloons post reset and having items to purchase each update are not going to deter active players from stocking up on Doubloons. It may take years(s) but we may very well be back in the same situation down the road. Do not underestimate a player who goes out of their way to hunt down or farm Doubloons en masse.

It doesn't help that each Act's release can be completed in a few days of effort. What else are we supposed to do in this game when we are otherwise maxed out on everything? Might as well rebuild our Doubloon wallets out of spite.

WHAT ABOUT THE DISPARITY IN GOLD WALLETS?

This game came out almost 8 years ago. There are people who play every day with 1-2+ Billion in gold. Fairly active players have 50-500+ in Gold whether or not they purchased everything that is already in the store.

Does the disparity in Gold for player's wallets going to mean that Gold is going to be reset as well?

    Dark Adventurer Set

I think Rare was on the right path with the release of the Dark Adventurer Set. You have a large set of items with a higher end price tag to sink your gold into.

THE PROBLEM; this set was released in 2021 and Rare didn't keep up with adding more ways to spend your Gold in large chunks.

There should have been a comparably priced set released every year. At a minimum, several misc items that are priced high enough to eat up our Gold like The Rare Legend Figurehead.

  • @vorack said in Doubloon Currency - Developer Update:

My thing is the reset is a worthless solution to an issue only rare created and that action won't change anything and have the exact same problems immediately.

Ive been playing since release and have 80k doubloons with nothing to spend them on because I've played through all the past seasons. When I get my doubloons reset I'll end up with thousands of doubloons with nothing to spend them on since I already have all the past cosmetics they are putting in the black market.

As a new player you need to grind thousands of doubloons to get cosmetics from previous seasons,h when the reset happens a new player will have to grind for thousands of doubloons to get cosmetics from previous updates.

They said in the video (6:03) that all current cosmetic doubloon prices will be converted to gold.

Doubloons are and have always been free to earn. You're thinking of Ancient Coins, which are not being reset.

  • So, I do have to ask...

When you say that all Outpost doubloon items will be switched to gold after the reset... do you mean items that cost doubloons that are at the Reaper's Hideout too?

I'm asking because a friend of mine has been trying to grind up for Flameheart's hat for a bit now, and he's unfortunately kind of stressing over the doubloon reset. If it'll end up costing him gold, that's no problem for him. But he doesn't want to have to earn up all the doubloons he's already saved again...

  • Can we learn more about what exactly out of the old 2018/2019 items will be returning?

Right now, I'm expecting to see the following sets return:

    • Wailing Barnacle
    • Mercenary
    • Bone Crusher
    • Forsaken Ashes
  • @jumperovsky said in Doubloon Currency - Developer Update:

Don't want exclusive new commemorative Doubloon-themed items for my Doubloons. I gathered them for a reason to buy stuff I missed in the past not be forced to buy new stuff only to those old items show up after the reset. Thats another FOMO tactic, another time limited offer, another time limited event, another hey we reset your progress so you will stay with us longer.

You can turn all your doubloons into gold, then continue to use that gold on returning season items

  • @allikatoculi said in Doubloon Currency - Developer Update:

i genuinely do not understand the thought process. some people have a lot of doubloons that's for sure. i play nearly daily and i have like 600. So if someone could point me to the magical doubloon voyage where i get hundreds of thousands of doubloons that would be awesome.

I got around 1000 for playing Insiders for years.
Some Bilge Rat commendations still give doubloons (and a couple did in the past).
When you've been playing for a longer time, you don't spend them on returning Seasonal items (as you already have them).
Open those ashen treasure chests and sell the content (each book is 5 doubloons IIRC) and the chest.
Plus all the other items you find on the Seas that give doubloons.

Reaper Emissary also gives multiplier on doubloons.

  • I'm hoping some items we missed out will be part of the black market

For example, the snowburned ship lantern

I wanted this for how long since i was too busy with hourglass to even find a parrot back then during the orb in 2022

-festival of the damned lantern and sails
    -reaper hull and sails

Hopefully adventure cosmetics return, while the titles earned remain exclusive to adventures

  • Honestly as long as you price it according to the people who don't play in alliance servers constantly and have millions of doubloons. Maybe 5k per item. Or less because people will want to grind for these items and it is more doable if they are cheaper then catered to the "cheaters" who sit in alliance servers all day.
