Loot Defense - bury your treasure

  • Being able to bury your treasure seems like it would be a quintessential part of being a pirate. It would come in handy when you end up on the unfortunate end of a pvp combat bout.

I would imagine it to go something like this:

    • I bury the treasure
    • I am able to mark a map to put on the quest radial
    • if killed by another player, they can pick up a copy of that map

I had this idea after losing a vault key last night to another player. I planned to hide on the island with they key while our crew drew the attackers away. Unfortunately, the mermaid flare kept on setting my hiding spot as a beacon.

I’m definitely more of a strategic pirate than I am a combat expert.

  • The best loot defense is turning it in, and it's permanent. Why would I waste time digging holes? If you're in combat, you won't have time to dig them and you'd be wasting time digging it in the first place on the off chance that you get attacked at some point in the future (and then they get your map anyways so...).

    Just turn it in.

  • @d3adst1ck
Why would I turn in a vault key that I can use to get the treasure?

It’s not hard to see another crew sailing toward the island you are on. That give a player ample time to dig a hole and mark the map.

  • @spfirek said in Loot Defense - bury your treasure:

    @d3adst1ck
Why would I turn in a vault key that I can use to get the treasure?

Because you are weighing the risk of holding onto it for more treasure vs. potentially losing it, or cashing it in for what it's worth and securing gold. It's a trade off. Risk vs. Reward.

The only reason to bury treasure is to try to mitigate risk, however if a ship is coming for you and they don't see you bury the totem they are just going to sink you anyways so now instead of hiding treasure you will want to hide yourself, purposely putting your ship at a disadvantage because if they kill you they get the map anyways.

It seems like a pointless addition which only serves to benefit a crew playing keep away. You can already do this by hiding loot on an island. Like you said, it's not hard to see a crew sailing toward the island you are on - hide the treasure in a bush and sail away.

  • @d3adst1ck you’re right, it is a game of keep away. As a PIRATE SIMULATION that is what, in my opinion, the game is. I would interpret the life of a pirate as a steal and don’t get stolen from ideology. At the core, it’s a pirate game. Pirates bury their treasure.

I’m sure you are aware that items hidden above ground let off a bright light. The is never a good way to truly hid the item without burying it.

On your risk vs reward point, I’d much rather risk giving up the map to treasure I buried than just straight up losing it. As one player buries the totem the crew gets the boat out of there. Then I take the mermaid back to the ship. At the very worst, we are sunk further away from the island giving us a chance to get back there. There is also a (small) chance the other crew doesn’t find the map.

This is my last point on it. I can’t waste all day arguing about a game mechanic that would be nice to have. I appreciate seeing your side of it though.

  • @spfirek said in Loot Defense - bury your treasure:

As a PIRATE SIMULATION that is what, in my opinion, the game is.

This game is far from a simulation. It's a fantasy game and not at all realistic nor is it trying to be. We don't get tired, sick or sail around on accurately modeled ships. We can shoot ourselves out of cannons and survive. Loot emits a bright light no matter what the lighting conditions are because they aren't trying to simulate real world conditions.

The bright light is intended to make loot findable. You can try to hide it, and a lot of times you can be successful, but there's always a risk that someone will spot it. This is an intended mechanic. Your dig system with buried loot and retrievable maps is the exact same thing, and therefore redundant.

It's an old idea that gets brought up every couple of months by new players but mechanically it doesn't provide any benefit that we already don't have.

  • Guy says pirates should be able to bury treasure, other guy says it's pointless. 🤔 Wonder who the real pirate is 😂

  • @expsnailer 😂 fair point.

  • You have the ability to hide treasure. Stick it in the caves of Smugglers Bay. Stash it in the secret lab. There are caves in the unmarked islands. But just turn it in. We’ve run with the vault key too. Once we have the distance one of us can jump off the ship with the key and store it in a cave before returning to our ship which has led our chasers away. Your ship had better pass by several islands though to make it hard for your pursuers to figure out what happened if they catch up and sink you.

Neither. It is a video game.

  • @ghostpaw a pirate video game ❤️

  • @expsnailer

Guy says pirates should be able to bury treasure, other guy says it's pointless. 🤔 Wonder who the real pirate is 😂

Pirates also don't fly out of cannons, heal through potassium, and fight the undead. If we want to talk Real pirates, they didn't even bury treasure. That is taken purely from fiction. You're arguing realism when even realism isn't on your side.

  • @nabberwar it's not about realism lol you dig up treasure already no reason why you can bury it to

  • @expsnailer said in Loot Defense - bury your treasure:

@nabberwar it's not about realism lol you dig up treasure already no reason why you can bury it to

Other than it is a completely unnecessary mechanic that adds nothing to gameplay.

  • @expsnailer said in Loot Defense - bury your treasure:

@nabberwar you dig up treasure already no reason why you can't bury it too.

This is actually untrue. It's a colossal waste of time, is a bit redundant, and is OP.

Addressing the 1st point - nobody would ever be able to steal anything because everybody would just dig it up and rebury it where nobody could find it. Forget about stealing it off of a ship, because it won't be there unless they're turning in. This also has the adverse effect of attacks increasing in and around outposts, because it would be about the only time you could guarantee that loot would be on board. This, in turn, means those just joining the seas are more likely to have a bad experience before they ever really get a chance to set sail. Furthermore, why would you want to punish a winning pirate who just vanquished his foes by forcing him to then go find it? All that does is promote a race to the buried loot when 1 crew already won and the other already lost.

Second point - with all of the bushes, rocks, caves, nooks, and crannies EVERYWHERE, hiding your loot is incredibly easy, but is never full-proof to those with a keen eye or those willing to explore. I myself know a few good spots, with my favorite being on Ship Wreck Bay (impossible to see unless you have an eagle's eye).

Third point - well, I actually already covered that 1. There's no chance someone will find it. That is unless they kill you... This has the added negative affect of pirates killing you just to see if you have a map, which unnecessarily promotes PvP over say, a mutually beneficial alliance that could result in a great social dynamic and potentially making new friends - kiss that goodbye, as everyone will be out to gut you.

You asked who the real pirate was. Just pulling you out of a delusion. Playing a video game does not make anyone a pirate, astronaut, hit man, city designer, football player, pro racer, or gun slinger in the west.

  • @dlchief58 so you wouldn't find it fun to find another pirates buried treasure? You must not like the gold hoarders lol

  • @galactic-geek PvP isn't promoted enough anyhow, there's a map so it would not be impossible to find, and for your second point lol who cares if someone gets outpost raided it's a pirate game it ain't "Sea of Friends" as some like to say ❤️

  • @ghostpaw maybe to you, some people like to be immersed in the world's created by game developers. I am a pirate ❤️

  • I definitely think it's odd that there's no way to bury your own treasure in a pirate fantasy game, but I can't really think of a way that isn't pointless.

  • Ok I may be an odd person out here but I kinda think it would be fun to bury treasure.

I know whats the point? Like I said I think it would be fun. I would bury an odd piece here and there just in the event I get killed whoever killed me can find it. Then again I do not take getting killed personally either.

True unless you are already one and are playing a game about it. How fun would it be though to play a space game with a real astronaut? I dont know I feel like they would get waaaaaay over technical about things. Playing a hitman game with a real hitman? I would get a tiny bit nervous I would do something to tick them off. I can have a bit of a loud trap on me.

And it doesn't need to be, because it's already prevalent enough.

You THINK it would be fun. I assure you that, if implemented, you would learn to hate it very quickly - to the point of not ever really using it ever again, therefore defeating its own purpose and bringing you right back to square one.

    so why bother?

Why would I hate it? Im just interested as to why you think I would "learn to hate it quickly". Kind of a big statement to make about someone you dont know.

I played a truck simulator game with real truckers before, that was kinda interesting. I actually kinda forgot about that. Its a PC game.

  • @galactic-geek thats debatable

  • As much as I love this idea, I don't think this will be needed, besides, in Sea of Thieves currently, there are loads of way to get gold and treasure.
I would consider this some time in the future but the main reason why not now is because with the loading/processing that comes with this might be overwhelming for the games system, like dropping a copy of the made if killed.
I do like your thinking but not right now

Let me simply ask you this then:

    1. Do you hide your loot frequently?
    2. Do you like hiding your loot?
    3. Do you like sinking or attacking ships only to discover they have no loot?
    4. Do you like having another voyage chapter that you did not expect?
    5. Do you enjoy losing after you already won?
    6. Do you like being attacked at outposts?
    7. Do you like being stalked by other ships?
    8. Do you like it when an ally betrays you?
    9. Do you like having a lot of voyages on your quest radial?

If the answer is no to any question, then this mechanic is not for you.

You don't actually have to answer here. Your answer will be for you as an individual to contend with.

Let me simply ask you this then:

    1. Do you hide your loot frequently?

Actually yes I do. When I was a solo slooper and if I was being chased by a larger ship and had good loot I did not want to risk losing I would set my wheel straight hop off my ship and go hide it , mermaid back and mark the island on my map.

I also will sometimes leave loot in a spot for someone else to find just for fun.

    1. Do you like hiding your loot?

    I do actually.

    1. Do you like sinking or attacking ships only to discover they have no loot?

I dont really attack ships much. I dont think everyone would burry their loot though and have nothing on board. Do you know what pain it would be stopping to bury every piece of loot during an athena run? Also why would people bury everything? Dont they want to turn it into an outpost?

    1. Do you like having another voyage chapter that you did not expect?

Sure why not? Its something to do. To be honest when I am with my crew I dont even pay attention to how many voyage chapters there are.

    1. Do you enjoy losing after you already won?

Not sure what you mean by that.

    1. Do you like being attacked at outposts?

Outpost camping is a very poor way to play the game. So I would not be worried of some outpost camper waiting for me to kill me for the map I may or may not even have. I have only ever been attacked at an outpost less times I can count on one hand after playing for nearly three years now.

    1. Do you like being stalked by other ships?

This happens anyways. Also yes I do very much.

    1. Do you like it when an ally betrays you?

    I do not do allies.

    1. Do you like having a lot of voyages on your quest radial?

    I dont care.

If the answer is no to any question, then this mechanic is not for you.

I fail to see how some of these questions have to do with burying treasure.

You don't actually have to answer here. Your answer will be for you as an individual to contend with.

Its fine I answered, only took a minute.

  • I have thought about this aswell but the thing that worries me is server merges.

Would it be safe to carry over?

Burying would be good for one session but then again its probably safer and more convenient on your ship.

    But it would add options.
As cool as this is though i probably wouldnt ever use it.

Perhaps i could bury it when im on an island doing a riddle or something but im never not watching the horizon to be caught unawares. Usually.

Even so, it would be a chore if i had a lot of loot burying it all. Id probably not bother and just focus in being as quick as i can.

If im the attacker i gotta kill someone to get the map, goodbye stealth heists if they bury everything.

I think using hiding spots would be better for balance.

  • This is an awsome idea to able to hide your loot is a massive help and a great idea
