Make the "old map" great again!

  • So Rare,

why make 80% of the map worthless to do voyages in?
i turned in 4 villainous skulls, 3 hateful, 1 disgraced, spice box, gunpowder barrel on demand, got 7,5k for all mentioned above....... O_o took me 2hours+
i think the reward cuts are to severe and now the ones in the devil's roar pay at least 3x the amount then outside of that tiny boring bottleneck.
don't have a big map if you can only effectively use 1/5th of it.
in other words RAISE the rewards again!!!!!!!!

  • Hmm I think you will find that the DR chests only give 50-100% more from what I have been reading, not 3x more. The effort in DR is definitely more than double to get chests from there.

It really comes down to a risk verse reward scenario, and I like the way it currently works (noting I am a new player who has only been playing for a week).

I have found groups that prefer the challenge of the DR, and others who would prefer to much more safely gather treasure, with smaller gold coming from chests.

  • @daantjebnl

Keep playing, before long you'll have more gold than you know what to do with.
I passed the 4 million mark a few days ago. What good does it do me?
Whilst nothing really appeals to me, I have bought updated cosmetics of everything and can only use one of each at any given time.
Even less if you count shirts, coats, scars and tattoos.

I'd happily trade it all for some lasting game play content.

  • @personalc0ffee nope 900 for a villainous skull and like 2200 for one in the roar, thats more then double why are you lying.i dont say those need to go down can you read? i say the rest of the map has become useless. d* they need to go up a bit again. there is no reason for not being in that same boring tiny area , that's not a expansion, the usable productive area got shrunken down 75%

  • @admiral-rrrsole i already have enough, i just find it atrocious the rewards they give there, there is 0 reason to even be outside of the roar anymore, its a joke.

  • @personalc0ffee almost all normal villaimous go for 900, in roar 2200, best one ive seen lately in normal was like 1,025g , so not quite double/half, in the normal area it's not worth doing skulls or chests anymore, regardless of what a developer said. no matter what the exact numbers might be, it's not even half, and just not worth it.

  • Cargo runs in the original map are an excellent way to make gold quickly if you start stacking them

  • @daantjebnl sagte in Make the "old map" great again!:

I have seen a villianous skull under 1000 gold maybe 10-20 times...and I'm PL, so I saw alot of them...the most valuable one was about 1340 gold...it IS the double value, not more

  • @schwammlgott k well ive seen almost only 900-ish ones lately , maybe some that barely gave 1100.

  • @personalc0ffee said in Make the "old map" great again!:

@admiral-rrrsole Curious do you own every cosmetic in the game, yet?

As @Ant-Heuser-Kush pointed out correctly, no. I have no interest in a purple this or a green that. They all work the same and I can only ever use one at a time so why bother?

I have upgrades to all utilities, clothing and ship livery, sails, figurehead, etc.
One or two of each item.
The only people it effects are my crew mates. I rarely see myself so who cares? I wore the pre-order Black Dog clothing for at least 4 months straight until @Jacknife-Wilson suggested that I should maybe take a bath and a change of clothes. lol
Before that I was in my underwear for the first month or so and it didn't phase me in the slightest.

I paid full price for gloves and boots when I only have one hand and one foot. lol

After I buy Sanctuary Outpost and Thieves Haven I might retire, grow a veggie garden and open a brothel. Who knows?

  • Ran a normal Athena voyage last night (outside the Roar) and had a really fun time. Made less stressful by not having to dodge volcanoes here and there. Frankly, our crew enjoyed ourselves regardless of the value of the loot we handed in. Quite a lot of worth in that, from our perspective.

  • @solestone563412 again someone missing the point, NOT the value in the roar is a problem, but the hillariously low value of things in the rest of the 75% of the map. it makes it feel forced to just go to devils roar all the time..
and no the devils roar isnt hard AT ALL, skeleton killing is even easier there , just lead them over a geiser.

  • @luciansanchez82 want some virtue with your signalling? like you cant have fun and also realise how ridiculous the rewards are outside the roar.

people alliancing in the roar do NOT put in more effort yet gold keeps flooding in, i hope they revive the rest of the world again at some point, because it feels worthless to spend time there as it is.

  • @nikinjapan yeh or just regular animal farming even better, just the gold and souls voyages are worthless there now, like, completely worthless.

  • @daantjebnl said in Make the "old map" great again!:

Worthless is a strong word though. Yes, you get less gold per item you hand in, but that is simply how the game differentiates between the effort required within the old and new map areas. I wouldn't complain at seeing the value of items going up, but I don't feel it's needed. I'd be happier to just see more fun reasons to play any particular part of the map (more commendations/things to do etc...). That way I could just enjoy the game and let the gold roll in as slow or as fast as it will.

  • @luciansanchez82 was gong to say the same thing - the level of effort required to get 7.5K in Devil's Roar is more than in the other regions.

  • @sshteeve only its not, its way less effort to get 7,5 k in the devils roar.
maybe 4 skulls? wich geysers will kill for you, why do people keep saying the roar is hard, its not. at all. they overestimate their own content and then abandon all that was already there.

What about eruptions? What about geysers taking you out? What about getting back to the ship when the water all around in boiling.
To say that the Devil's Roar is not harder is absurd!

Yes, it's not as hard as folk are making it out to be and it simply takes patience, but the chests should be worth more, otherwise people would never bother going back once they had completed the commendations - there are already Legends who refuse to complete Athena missions there as they can't be slowed as much in The Wilds, Shores of Plenty or Ancient Isles.

We spent almost all of our session over the weekend on the "old map" doing cargo runs because it's easier there than the Roar.

  • @solestone563412, @Admiral-RRRSole so long as I can have first dibs on Sailor's Bounty!

  • @solestone563412

The main problem with prices is that the Random Number Generator parameter is too wide. A typical captain's chest can fetch anywhere between 500 (or even less) and a 1,000 (or even more).
This staggering difference is magnified two fold at the Roar because it's simply x2 the regular value... if there is such a thing as "regular value" of anything (except cargo runs) in this game.

All loot needs their variables to be honed in to a tighter RNG parameter.
Instead of it being 500 to 1,000 make it 500 to 750 or 750 to 1,000. Just a bit of consistency would be nice.

It was ridiculous before the Devil's Roar and now it's ridiculous x2 since the Roar has been introduced.

The only diversity in the entire game is the value of loot, where it doesn't belong. Where as diversity should be in the voyages and quests.

  • @solestone563412 no the items should be about worth as much before they devaluated them that is the point of this topic. the roar is great as it is, the "old items" i feel should go up again a bit its truly disappointing to have shiny glowing floating skull fragments skulls making only 900 gold.

  • @admiral-rrrsole agreed, ideally we would have a set price for all items in the game, rather than an RNG roll.
As I have said to other people in other threads, the whole game is a dice throw - RNG for what the voyage will be like (length, items to collect), then RNG on whether the animals are on the right island, or what item drops/digs up, THEN RNG again for what price you get...

You have a bad night with the Random Number Generator and boy it can be down heartening!

  • @sshteeve yes they should be worth more, for sure, they look cooler 200% agreed, the old items should just be increased again a bit, they might as well have a disappointing trombone playing in the background now as you turn them in.

  • @daantjebnl I'll agree with you on that one. :)

  • @sshteeve
    I totally agree, mate.
Let's not forget the RNG roll of the dice on how many chapters a voyage will have.
At level 50 GH for the Roar commendations, got one single quest for a voyage.
The next voyage had six chapters.

    Go figure.

  • @personalc0ffee said in Make the "old map" great again!:

I want them to tell me if a voyage is a chapter on the voyage table and how many chapters it has. The game knows, why can't I? Why do I have to wait for that banner to tell me if it is a Chapter?

It would make it easier based on my mood to decide to do it.

I don't need or want to know the value or how long it would take.

I agree re. Chapters... if nothing else it would be the game respecting the time I have, and then I could decide to invest in the proposed voyages, or not.
Makes sense, sometimes I find myself towards the end of a play session & I have just time to do one more.
Being stuck with a multi-chapter at this point drags it on.
Granted I could go off & do something else, but I like to make the most of the time I have.

@admiral-rrrsole agreed, ideally we would have a set price for all items in the game, rather than an RNG roll.

Nope, I disagree. It used to be that way and the player base hated it and I would hate it. It became too predictable.

We will have to agree to disagree on this one C0ffee, as someone still trying to get to Legend and a lot of items for the game it is pretty annoying not knowing whether I will get 500, 600, 700, 800 or 900 gold for that Marauder's Chest!
The excitement in the game is still there in what voyage you get and what chest is finally dug up, but as @Admiral-RRRSole has said they need to tighten up the gap at the very least!

  • @personalc0ffee G'day mate.

What do think about a tighter RNG parameter? Not a standard value but something a little closer to the value of the next equivalent chest.
It's stupid to dig up two identical captain's chests on the same island and sell one for half to two thirds of the value of the other.
Both chests took just as many shovels to unearth, both weighed the same to carry back to the boat and then along the same dock to the same GH.

This happens with multiple chests of supposedly equal value.
I think it was @stacky-a and I cashing-in nine captain's chests one after the other in turn.
Each one I cashed in was above $900 whilst hers were all well under. In the $600 bracket if I recall correctly.
I don't know, maybe the GH fancied me more? lol

P.S. Sorry if it wasn't you, Stacey. It could have possibly been a koala... or a possum. lol

  • @sshteeve

You've just reminded me of another gripe I have with loot value.

You can sometimes get paid more for a Marauder's chest than a Captain's chest. This should NEVER be the case.

  • @daantjebnl said in Make the "old map" great again!:

why make 80% of the map worthless to do voyages in?

I think the simple answer here is they haven't. Yeah they might have dropped the rewards some, and maybe that might need a little bit of tweaking, but that doesn't make the rest of the map worthless, even if you are grinding for cash. And if you're not then you can still have just as much fun playing the game.

  • @personalc0ffee you say that "RNG loot value role has no bearing on reputation though so I'm not sure why you said that." but do we know this for sure?

What I know is that I get a better rep gain for a boom boom that is on a merchant voyage than I do for one that is just sold for a hundred gold. There doesn't seem to be a wealth of information surrounding rep either online, but if we have something from Rare that says otherwise fair enough.
I have always assumed that there is no "fixed" value for an item for rep gain and just presumed that it was linked to the variable used for gold gains. Saves on programming, which is what I would assume most folks would go for.

If I'm wrong I'm wrong though - would just like some evidence to the contrary! :)

    [EDIT]

Just having a look back through previous messages from Rare, at the launch of the game we had an issue with the reputation and/or gold not increasing properly, with a patchnote saying:

    • Due to the volume of players, our services that awards players gold and reputation when cashing in rewards can be delayed. Players should expect to see these rewards eventually come through, as they are queued up in our message service.

Clearly there is a service, probably a subroutine within the server itself (given the delay we had) that handles player statistical changes, such as rep, doubloons and gold gains.
I would doubt that there is more than one subroutine as this would be really inefficient, but instead one function that takes a couple of arguments from the calling code as parameters (amount to be increased and item to increase), with the necessary changes then being made to a player save state server-side, which the client then picks up.

    [EDIT 2]
    ALSO:
    https://www.seaofthieves.com/forum/topic/59535/are-reputation-and-gold-values-similar-or-equivalent-i-may-have-found-the-answer

SOOO... perhaps rep changes are static, or perhaps they are linked intrinsically to gold collected, perhaps the changes are so minute, especially at later levels, that we don't even notice the difference between them.

Anyways - RNG sucks and there is too much randomness in the game.

  • @daantjebnl and @PersonalC0ffee The regular old Villainous sell for between 900 up to a little over 1200. Ash Villainous sell for 2200-2600. So sometimes you can say it is up to 2 and a half times the value.

I agree with Coffee though, the risks in DR are as much as 3-4 times more to acquire the loot than anywhere else on the map.

If you like the old map, then sail the old map. Most likely you won't see much in the way of PvP as DR is still very popular. Especially for Athena runs. Just last night we had 4 out of a possible 6 ships in DR. Ours, another brig and two galleons. So the risk from a PvP point was 3 times more likely than the rest of the map. Plus the various new ways to sink/die because of the environment make DR a lot harder to acquire the loot from. So it has greater value. Not only that, but the loot looks better. LOL

  • As for the OP asking to make the original map great again, the only way to truly do that is to add specific quests to that region. Quests that are unique, not necessarily unique because of value received, but unique in that they offer something different. Something new and fun. I have seen several ideas on new quests over the past couple of months from scavenger hunt type quests to new story styled quests. All of which sound very entertaining and something Rare should look at. I do agree that the old map seems bare these days. In fact, the only time I have been there is during initial spawn, and for a couple of forts that popped up. Otherwise, since FS release, all of my time sailing has been in DR. So much more exciting to be there.

  • @daantjebnl no trump parody's please.
