"More locks/filters would defeat the purpose of the random character creator."

  • No, it wouldn't. It would just prevent hours and hours of rolls. A lot of us are roleplayers or character fanatics. We have a specific character or idea in mind when we set out to play a game with character options. These kind of people, myself included, aren't going to suddenly change that ideal after the 9000th none matching character is shown to us. We will just get frustrated with rolling and quit or keep remaking the pirates until we happen upon winning the lottery and finding the perfect match.

Simple locks would fix a lot of this struggle. Lock gender, age, skin tone, weight, etc. I am not going to play a male toon or 80+ year old, no matter how many random roll, having half my roles wasted on them isn't going to change my mind.

But really, this game could easily have a simplistic character editor after selecting the random one. Think WoW style, not super detailed but you can pick a few different noses, a couple different weights. Etc. I am on my third day an over 700 rolls, and have seen every piece of the pirate I want to make on other pirates, but none quite matched that dream.

Any game where you roleplay and progress with friends, a lot of people are going to want a character who is relatable, who they can stake their pride in or who makes them laugh. Something they want to be known for and build their legacy on. Shoving a narrative down our throat at the expense of character creation, is the last thing a drowning game needs to do.

Heck, I cannot even find anything similar to a large number of the pirates that were advertised for the game. Feels like Mass Effect: Andromeda, early on it looked different then like a "Haha!" it all was ripped away.

They game has enough reasons for criticism. Being completely unable to get the character you want for your pirate adventure doesn't need to be one. Some of us aren't just gamers dropping in for the gameplay. Many of us are roleplayers who see this as our chance to have that pirate adventure we always wanted.

Hope none of this is seen as too aggressive or critical. I love the game, but me and a couple people I know either gave up or are on many many hours of rolling character.

I also noticed it is really easy to get decent looking dudes but about 80% of the females I roll are old ladies.

  • I definitely agree. I've already had to reroll my character twice just because I couldn't get behind them not being relatable for me.

Currently sitting here playing the endless roulette trying to get red-hair, only to have one pop up and it not be anywhere near relatable in face or body.

How am I supposed to get in the mood of inserting myself into the world that the game developers hand-crafted beautifully, if I'm just sitting here going. 'But it just isn't ME.'?

It's not like the developers had to RNG the islands until they came out just perfect. Why do we have to play the lottery to get one even anywhere NEAR what we want?

You can't even say that it's to make sure that people don't just make the most attractive characters, because you'll go watch people make characters in video games and they'll intentionally do weird things to their characters. Or you'll go watch Day[9]'s playthrough of the game and he intentionally chooses to be this huge fat guy.

Overall, I'd like to just play the game and feel behind the character I make, not sit here rolling until the end of time since there are enough combinations to fill up three lines of these forum posts with digits.

  • @personalc0ffee

    For a reason.

  • Bruh I didn't even know you could roll.

I picked the least cruddy of 5(?)

And accepted my fate, I'd have to pirate to earn a living.. just an ugly duckling.

IMO get ready to pay and reroll till your hearts consent when that ingame shop opens up ;)

  • @honestfuture85

I am not even leveling a character till I get one I want. And over 700 rolls in that may be never, there are trillions of total combination so getting the one I want is very unlikely. Will probably stop playing and monitor the game till they add more content, a 3 man ship and better character creation. In the meantime going to get a refund. Will re-purchase once it is cheaper, on sale and fixed.

  • @miles-traveler

Heh like I said I didn't even know..

I was like this is it? Lol.

I pretty much assumed every game has microtransactions and when I found out I could reroll a new one at the start and or delete mine I was already mid 20s with my sail..

    Cheers though. I do understand

  • @honestfuture85 I deleted my level 22-23-22 because she looked all wrong and somebody showed me the reroll. I was constantly feeling hesitant to bother progressing because I did not like my character. And now I am hesitant to play at all, what if they add proper filters and editing in the future? Will I have to delete a pirate legend then? Character creations is big for me in every game I play, so I am afraid to bother until it is fixed. Along with a 3 man ship, my crew of 3 is sick of using a big, encumbered 4 man ship.

  • @miles-traveler 100%!!! Adding even 1 filter will cut hours out of process. Male/female, hair color, ethnicity, body are all options. If that would defeat the purpose of the IPG than let it be defeated.

  • @king-brouille Exactly, sadly too many hipsters around here whine that somebody might get away with making an attractive character in a video game.

  • Update: Got a character I thought was pretty swell, wasn't a fan of the face but it could pass. Game crashed. Time to start spinning again... https://i.imgur.com/GtofteE.jpg

  • It's a bit insulting that they decided to give us some trashy pirate generator instead of the ability to create our own characters. One of them actually said, paraphrased, "We made the IPG because otherwise people would all look the same." What kind of tool must this person be? Even worse are those fools who agreed with that person and decided to allow this "feature" to be included in the release version.

  • I still think my idea was great. Would be easy to implement, and appease most of those complaining. Idea:

Here's 5 pirates. Pick the one you like best. Here's 4 more pirates similar to the one you like. Pick the one you like best. Rinse and repeat until you have a pirate you're happy with.

  • As a result everyone looks more varied that they otherwise would. I love it as is.

  • @verminpup People who would play randomized characters still would. People who won't will reroll for hours if necessary to get what they want. And sorry, no matter how many times you shove a 400lbs dude, old grandma or crossdresser at somebody who doesn't want it, they won't change their mind.

Simply filters like Gender, Race, Weight and Age would not change the variety at all, they would cut down on search time for those of us who are passionate about our characters.

Have to defend Rare slightly here. Being that our setting is some sort of fantasy pirate realm, there may not be any genders or races.

  • @miles-traveler I think the statement RARE is making here is exactly against this kind of gaming philosophy of looking exactly the way you want to. Sure, you can still re-roll 400 times to look like another jack sparrow or black beard among a thousand other, but the game doesn't encourage it.

I re-rolled quite a bit, ended up picking something I was mostly okay with, but then she grew on me and with me and I'm really glad I didn't have the option to fine tune it.

  • @verminpup I find that a false argument and very poor justification for expecting people to roleplay and progress in a long standing world as something they aren't attached to. Adding filters wouldn't create thousands of Jack Sparrows and a large number of people who ask for them just want to find a female who isn't hideous, which is quite easy if you are picking a male. Loads of nice options there. Took me many hours to find a female who wasn't 300lbs, 50lbs, an old granny, super broad shouldered or who had a masculine face.

By rerolling "quite a bit", in essence you did fine tune it.

Exactly this, unless like my brother you picked the first thing Rare threw at you, you still wanted control over how your character looked. And why the f**k wouldn't you? It is a roleplaying, open world social environment. Rare either was just too lazy to make a character maker or was trying to push an agenda.

I think what RARE is doing is making a point that these characters are not Hideous. They are ''Normal'' people of different builds and shapes and such.

Maybe not all the characters would look like jack sparrow, but you kinda confirmed my point by saying that you just want to play a sexy lady pirate and nothing else.

Being Fat isn't being hideous, nor is being wide shouldered, barrel-chested, or just old. There's a lot of value in the design philosophy even by just looking at it through lenses of inclusivity and diversity.

I did, yes, because RARE was generous enough to change that feature since the earlier phases of development. Otherwise I would have been stuck with a more random character, and I would have been fine with that.

I'm not above or immune to vanity.

  • @VerminPup So how does giving choice to the players remove inclusivity and diversity?

You yourself didn't like the choices given to you and sat until you found one you were "mostly okay with". How does giving the option to make the character how you like remove anything?

People are going to do what they want. I've seen people spam random on character customization and roll with that and I've seen people spend hours going down to the finest detail when possibly. Both are just fine here, as it's the players choice. Removing that choice does nothing but frustrate people.

Even I wish I could reroll my character, but I've been saving gold and building rep so I'm biting the bullet till they give me that option.

  • @lucid-stew really? Well I'd have to say if there truly are no genders or races in Rare's pirate world they probably shouldn't have exclusively used design cues from THIS world.
1 filter, that's it. Give us one filter. Everyone won't look the same. They can keep the randomness of hair, scars, tattoos, facial features intact. I think if you took a poll of what matters most to players when picking their pirate it would rank as follows:
    Gender
    Body type
    Race
If Rare allowed us to pick just one of those, I'd be happy. That still leaves a whole bunch of room for Rare's random 'magic'. Besides if rare really wanted everyone to look unique they wouldn't have left us with such a lackluster supply of cosmetics, but that's a whole other topic

So attractive women aren't "normal"? That's not a terribly inclusive attitude. They didn't say anything about a "sexy lady pirate", they merely said most options for women seemed to be old, obese, or masculine and that they didn't desire those traits in their character.

I did, yes, because RARE was generous enough to change that feature since the earlier phases of development. Otherwise I would have been stuck with a more random character, and I would have been fine with that.

You had the option to take what was given to you or choose another. How is what you did any different than what the OP is requesting? Because you settled for 50%(or whatever)? The implication that everyone would choose the same is a bit offensive, really. But I guess the p***s need to be directed by the ruling class to make the "proper decisions" now and again.

  • @verminpup Again, by shoving an agenda, they are accomplishing nothing.

B: Loads of super attractive cartoony guys in this game, excluding females from that and making it very hard to accomplish an attractive one is either a lazy oversight or politics pushing.

Two of those can be affected and the third is almost never as drastic as people want to pretend.

D: I am a normal woman, I haven't been able to find a single one that looks like me. I work in an office with 20 other normal women of many ages, races and weights. Not a single one of them is hideous like a SoT female(unless you reroll 5000 times).

E: Being fat is unhealthy, scientific fact, there is plenty wrong with it and it is not attractive because it is considered a marker of low self control and drive. Evolution, eat it.

You aren't going to make somebody who wants an SUV suddenly want a Sedan by constantly showing them Sedans instead of what they asked for. G: Yes I want to play a sexy pirate lady, so the f**k what? I am sexy irl and work hard for it. And I want my pirate to be relatable. Get over it, being hot isn't a bad thing and having the option to play attractive characters is a positive, period.

H: Wasting players time to push an agenda or cover up lazy design, is inexcusable except to hipsters, fangirls and SJWs. People who want an attractive pirate, will get one or quit trying. And won't just choose toothless granny because it showed it to them again.

Yes, really. If you can tell me exactly WHERE in this world Sea of Thieves is set, I invite you to do so. Gender varies across cultures. That's a fact. Race, as most people understand it, doesn't exist. That's a fact. So what exactly are you putting in the game other than a bunch of stereotypes if you include those two?

Where did I say that pretty women are not normal? What I said is that pretty is a societal and cultural construct and/or a personal preference.

being Fat is not Unhealty. Plenty of people are bigger and heavier than others and are perfectly healthy. This whole fat-shaming is really unecessary. So is calling "Masculine" women hideous.

I personally find that most of the men in the game are silly looking, more than they are sexy. I also find that many of the women in the game do fall into the weight, body type, and facial features that most would consider very attractive.

Clearly we disagree on the value of this system, and clearly you disagree with RARE's view on this as well. And I'm glad RARE are doing it this way.

  • @lucid-stew I am a girl, I want a filter that filters out the ones who look like they have an X and Y chromosome instead of an X and X.

Right, genetic sex exists and there's no changing that. However, being that males and females vary greatly physically, defining just what a male and female look like when they aren't nude isn't so simple.

Yeah, because I think they get it on some level. Rather than imposing an idea on you, they've given you the freedom to decide what that means for yourself.

Don't get me wrong, I think the IGP sucks too. I just don't think filters or locks are the solution to the issue.
