Adding sirens to the game?

  • I feel that the addition of Sirens would be awesome! Say your out sailing with your team and you start to hear the sirens call, My thoughts would be that the sirens take control of your 3 other team mates and force them to drop the anchor and start to grab loot and force them into the water while the last team mate has to stop them, Possibly by jumping in the water and fighting the sirens. Maybe 3 sirens and for each one killed a team mate gains control back. Just a little idea i thought of the other day. Thoughts anyone?

  • The siren call could act like a storm making it difficult to stear your ship.

  • would be interesting to see.

  • @aussie-demonx New content? I'm for it! (I disagree with your interaction between Siren and player but but Sirens would be great.)

  • There are older clues, concept art that this might already be in roadmap in the firm of unfriendly merfolk guarding underwater ruins.

  • Maybe sirens can call you into fog banks and not just not being able to see rocks hide in the fog banks. :)

  • How about Sirens luring your whole crew, like how grog disrupts movement, except players are safe by being "nearby" player music?

    Imagine;
    Harpies, nesting in the crags that spear out of the sea, luring passing ships into crashing.
    In their nest lays sparkling treasure & fine tradegoods.
    A clever crew nullifies the Harpy Song with music of their own, an uses cannon to launch into their nest!

    Easy to patch in, as everything already exists in-game (except a Harpy model). Just leave the Harpy model as scenery (like the birds, bats, & fishes) until a later date when proper models & AI are being added.

    I came up this, an many other easy concepts (like mermaid ambushes & island pond Vodnìks).
    If my idea sounded good please tell me; I REALLY need to make a post to get support for them.

    Mythologically speaking, Sirens are Harpies (so are mermaids, but we'll ignore this).

  • @sgt-conley I like where this is going!

    Oh! What about evil mermaids? They could protect under water ruins?

  • This kinda stuff is exactly what i wanted! I would love to see them in the game. Honestly one of the coolest creatures. Imagine the panic as you look over the side of your ship and see them swimming all around. I would love to see more underwater combat.

  • I love this concept. Especially the musical components. It would give another use of the instruments and give some additional challenges.

  • You shouldn't aim to take control away from players. That's not fun. Reverse the controls so on PC for instance W is S, A is D and so on...that's something. Sirens would be cool you just aren't going to get away with beguilement removing control of the players involved.

  • I think it would be cool if sirens were sort of a disruptive essence. Such as when one player was swimming with loot from shipwrecks and towards the ship a siren could appear and start to drag the player down into the depths and drown him. The other players would have to jump in and kill the siren in order to save the player and the loot.

  • I think sirens should spawn on rocks and emit a fog around the surrounding area. As the myth goes they usually try to guide ships into rocks.

  • I also think sirens or harpies or evil mermaids would be cool! Definitely some kind of "pull you away" mechanics should be involved, though I don't know what kind would be best. ^^

  • @psycothicparrot And then solos would be screwed?

  • @amrylin1337 I guess they could add a ''struggle'' mechanic or something. So you just kind of let go of the chest when the siren drags you down and then you have to spam a button to break loose and then kill the siren to safely swim back up to grab the chest and get on your ship.

  • Sirens and mermaids are the same thing. Sirens just go even further back to Greek mythology while mermaids are more current.

  • @amrylin1337
    Think of the effects of Grog, but movement is slightly biased towards a Siren. Easy enough to physically fight, but playing a instrument removes the effect entirely.

  • @neminati

    Imagion;
    A crew sailing across the seas, when bursting wood is heard down below!
    A harpoon has pierced the hull from below! The ship has stopped dead!
    Suddenly, mermaides armed with blades crawl up the sides & start trying to cut folks on deck!
    The smart crew destroys the harpoons' head & patches the hole, lettting their ship escape!
    Gunshot easly removes the remaning bandit mermaids!

    How's that?
    It would be harder to code than the simple harpie stuff I wrote of, but it does just use the currently unfinished "Kracken Grabbing Ship" code.

  • @trenix90
    Harpies, Siren, & Mermaids are all the same mythology just warped over time by different cultures.

    YES! I love it!

  • @neminati
    I also enjoy your thought of having Hostile Mermaids defending ruins BUT what is there was friendly mermaid ruins where you could pick-up Voyages to clear out other ruins with sharks &/or Hostile Mermaids.
    Rewards would be;
    •Sharks: Random Trade Goods (they eat weird stuff)
    •Mermaids: Etherial Skulls (special humanoid opponets drop skulls)
    •Ruins: Random Trade Goods or Treasure Chests (just like islands)

    Simple to do. Same code for Voyages & Islands.

  • @sgt-conley I like it. Under water traders, with under water voyages. Man I hope the devs see this :)

  • @neminati
    I've been writting a... pitch, I guess, but I'm keep having to rewrite it.
    Delivery is everything.

    So i had a talk with my friend. Ill list the ideas in dot points. Also adding in what other people have suggested.

    • You can see them on rocks or swimming in the ocean and they start their song and then your ship starts steering towards them, Kinda like when a storm happens you can fight it but the wheel goes all wacky.

    • The mixing up of controls when under the influence of their song, Maybe like forward changes to lef or something.

    • They can attack your ship in the water. Kinda like pulling at it creating holes, forcing you shoot them off or something

    • Playing music can break the effect of the sirens song but only for a little.

    Going to keep thinking but i think this would be dope.

  • @aussie-demonx
    Your Sirens do to much & are poorly defined.
    Think of what they look like, their simple effects on players & gameplay, & how to make it nothing but interesting to deal with them. To me, you described 2 different enemies.
    A Harpy (with siren elements) and a Mermaid.

    Example;

    Looks like a harpie (bird humanoid). Flies around crags like a seagull, uneffected by players (gunshot, cannon, ect; like seagull).
    Cause a player movement bias towards roost crag (like grog & storms) if player is within 60 meters.
    Players "cure" movement bias with instrument song.
    Players use cannons to reach & plunder treasure sprinkled harpy nest.

    You can look to a responce I had to Neminati regarding mermaid interaction. Try thinking about that, please.

  • @aussie-demonx I like where the idea is going. I'm not sure whether sirens should be killable, or whether they should just be an obstacle to avoid while sailing, perhaps particularly dangerous at night?.. If you go near rocks (i like the idea suggested above of them emitting mist so you can't see exactly where rocks are) then you hear a singing... the singing can mesmerize your pirate for 2 seconds where you start walking towards the sirens... then you manage to snap yourself out of it and can move around your ship. 5-10 seconds later you are mesmerized again, but this time for 2.5 or 3 seconds. Every time you are mesmerized it lasts longer, and if you don't steer away in time you will be permanently mermerised and almost guaranteed to crash your ship. The wheel of the ship could automatically turn towards the rocks the sirens are singing from too.

  • Maybe you'd have to play music on board to drown out the sound of the sirens!

  • @dorax707 Wow that's an interesting idea! I almost feel like this would be too easy to counter though, I think the main counter should be avoidance.. you want to think 'oh no, there are sirens!' not 'oh look, sirens, someone bang their accordion out please! And we can forget they exist' if you see what I'm saying

  • @trenix90 Sirens in greek mythology are birds with human heads that fly over ships and try to drown crew members. They aren't the same as mermaids at all, we just changed the origins of the myth.

  • @aussie-demonx yeah, i think siens would be a good idea, maybe when you hear the sire song, you get the drunk dizziness effect (no vomit of course) but just the screen blur and wobble
