Crashing even after reinstall and verifying over and over

  • Hi,

I'm having an issue with Sea of Thieves on Steam — the game keeps crashing. Every time I launch it, it either crashes immediately or within 2 to 3 minutes of playing. When it crashes, File Explorer sometimes opens by itself.

I've already tried several fixes, including:

    Repairing and reinstalling the game

    Updating my graphics card drivers

    Running Windows Update

    Trying compatibility mode

    Unfortunately, none of these worked.

Also, sometimes after a crash, the game seems to get corrupted and automatically verifies the game files when I try to launch it again.

I’ve looked online for solutions, but most of the issues I found don’t quite match what I’m experiencing. Still, I’ve tried various troubleshooting steps with no success.

For reference, I’m currently running Windows 10 and using an AMD graphics card. All my drivers appear to be up to date, and I don’t overclock my system.

    Any help would be appreciated!

    Thanks.

  • It may not help but it's worth ruling out system file issues (Sea of Thieves relies on some Windows files for Xbox Live stuff, so may have issues other games don't). Try running SFC and DISM scans to see if they pick up any corruption.

Open Command Prompt as Administrator and enter (include spaces before slashes):
    DISM /online /cleanup-image /scanhealth

If that finds issues, then run:
    DISM /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth

Either way, then run an SFC scan:
    SFC /scannow

If that finds corruption, it will automatically fix it.

  • @realstyli I'll try it out, thank you for the advice!

  • Have you tried running it in DX11 mode? That solved most of my crashing issues on W10, but I also use nVIDIA not AMD.

  • @realstyli is it a bad sign if im stuck at 92% for the scanhealth T_T

It can get stuck for a bit. Give it time. If you can't complete the DISM scan, do the SFC scan and then DISM after that.

  • @realstyli i did the scans it repaired some corrupted files, but game is still screwed, we are gonna try swapping it to the dx11 if i can even load into the game

  • @dawnofday82
If you can't get into the game, you can set DirectX11 from the game's launch options in Steam with -dx11

  • @realstyli We actually did try that but it still crashed unfortunately

  • This seems like a tricky one.

I don't think it has anything to do with Windows 10 and an AMD GPU, as that's my setup.... unless it's your specific W10 build version, as I'm still on 22H2 which is more stable.

But I would look at other things first, such as whether secure boot is enabled? Or if you're running other kernel level anticheat that may be always running (for example Vanguard for League of Legends, or similar).

Another simple thing you could try is to go into the EasyAnticheat_EOS subfolder in your Program Files (x86) folder and delete the .sys file (NOT the .exe). This is just a log file, but it can get corrupted and cause issues. It will rebuild itself when you next boot the game.

  • @realstyli you know what secure boot is enabled from when i was playing the battlefield beta, that could be it. I'll test it out, thanks so much!

Secure Boot should be enabled. But I wonder if the kernel level Javelin anti-cheat that BF6 uses could be clashing? Like I said, this is a tricky one.

  • @realstyli I am not sure, i uninstalled it after the beta but yeah I honestly am gonna just try uninstalling and reinstalling on a different memory device.

  • Fingers crossed that works.

There are other steps on this support page that may also help:

The TL;DR is basically to add an exception for Sea of Thieves to your antivirus. I would also add an exception for Easy Anti-Cheat.

Beyond that, if you're still having crashing issues, I would recommend raising a Support ticket and detailing the steps you've already taken (maybe even link to this thread), as well as your full system specs.
