PvP Tutorial

  • Hello Sea of Thieves' and Rare's team!

I purchased your game on early july and had a lot of fun during summer holidays; however I have now played for approximately 60 hours, and though I am very bad at PvP in any games, I still haven't sunk any player's sloop.

Though it's a big request, could you please think of an update, maybe in a future season, with a PvP tutorial for beginners to get started on the bases (how to shoot with cannons since it gets sometimes complicated to properly align them with others boats, how to board on an enemy deck, how to use every type of projectiles and in which ways, the different uses of harpoons in a fight...).

Thank you guys for your understanding, I am very respectful of your work on this game and appreciate the thrill of it every time I start a new adventure!

  • @bit0saurusrex ahoy!

What's wrong with youtube and twitch? There are plenty of videos and streamers that teach you how to play the game.

  • @bit0saurusrex Hey Pirate !

I would check out Phuzzybond on YouTube.

With the seas just take your time and throw yourself out there.

I'm glad to see you've enjoyed it so far !

Remember you don't need to be the best or fully understand everything, I understand your ask, but jumping in the deep ocean is the best way for you to create your own experience.

Don't try to play like another Pirate, but take some advice and apply it to yourself and you will do great !

Of course watch some content and just look up some basics from Youtubers like Phuzzy.

Or make a separate post asking for tips about certain things you want to learn and I'm sure some of us will help you.

    Safe Journeys.

Safer Seas, Do the Fleet. You will fight Sloops and Galleons.

  • @Ixxxoloff @Sa1tynutz @BurnBacon Thank you all guys for answering me very quick.

I will try to improve according to your advices in the following days and will update then.

    Thanks again!

    100% this^^

When I first started playing, there was no such thing as Safer Seas. After the maiden voyage, you were off and running, and good luck. I was somehow with a random player I had no idea who they were, and we proceeded to chase after a red flag with 5 marks on it, whatever that was. I then saw it was another ship. We sailed next to them, when suddenly one of them climbed aboard, anchored us, set us on fire, and I'm standing there trying to understand everything, he shoots me dead. "What are you noobs doing, coming at us with nothing but bananas?" I then realized they had taken all our bananas, and I was furious. I had no idea if they were rare, all we'd ever get, etc., but I needed revenge. My random partner left, and after I put out the fire and got the anchor up, I chased after them. I never caught them, so I logged out and didn't play for a week after that, pouting. My husband would ask me if I wanted to play, and I'd reply, "Why, just so's some sweats can board us and steal our bananas? No thanks."

Shortly after that, I discovered Phuzzy's guides on youtube (not going to lie, I think I searched for "How to protect your bananas on your ship?"). I learned quite a lot, and NOW it all started making sense. Others have also created guides, tips, tricks, tactics, etc. you can use at your discretion to help you become more successful. This game has one of the steepest learning curves I've ever seen, so it will take time, experience, learning, etc. to get better at it. The key is to never give up. I have played almost everyday since starting several years ago, so please believe me when I say you'll get better without even realizing it, as long as you keep at it. You might even look back and laugh, like I am now. Afterall, I no longer care if someone steals my bananas anymore LOL.

    Don't give up :)

  • Check out PhuzzyBond and Blurbs on Youtube. Practice fighting skeleton ships is Safer Seas to get a feel for the cannons and the pressure of being under a barrage on cannon fire. Once you're comfortable, consider doing hourglass

  • @bit0saurusrex

    I'd suggest the others suggestions.

I mean...did you do the Maiden Voyage?
How much more did you learn after that wasn't even brought up? How much don't you know still...

It would likely only tell you how to switch weapons, reloading and where to find cannonballs. PvP is waaaay too complicated for a tutorial 😂

  • @bit0saurusrex Phuzzy is going to really improve your mentality in game so I 100% suggest him when you are diving into Sea of Thieves. However if you are wondering what the mechanics of pvp are I would suggest guides from Massive Spong on youtube. For new players I would highly recommend his movement, cannon and helm (its like a wheel guide but cooler) guides, they are easily understandable and actually informative unlike a lot of other competitive guides available. Plus hes the best helm unquestionably so you can pick up some tips from his other videos with of challenging fights.

  • If you're gonna learn from watching people, take the helpful and avoid their bad habits.

Don't get into yelling about bugs all the time

Don't throw sus accusations out there, ever, you will regularly be wrong and it may be used against you in the court of social media. Bad calls are a bad time.

Don't get condescending and passive aggressive in comms with others. Just let it go.

Keep criticisms balanced and substantive. If you find yourself fired up about the game all the time you are either playing the wrong game or approaching this game in a way that will worsen your experience.

Just have fun with it. None of it is that big of a deal. The people that enjoy this game the most have been sunk hundreds and/or thousands of times, no biggie. If it's not fun/rewarding it's not worth firing it up.

You will not regret considering this as you adventure in SoT.

    The rest is just practice.

  • @bit0saurusrex you can hit me up and i will sail with you for a session snd answer any questions you have

  • @bit0saurusrex I understand the need but I don't think there will ever be such thing as a "PVP tutorial". There are as many different ways to PVP as there are pirates on the sea and there's no tutorial that can cover everything. You'd complete the tutorial, enter your first battle, and immediately be faced with something that wasn't covered in the tutorial.

Reiterating what was said above about Massive Sponge's youtube channel and helm guide. But also watch his VOD reviews. Kaijoi is another great Youtuber who has specific in depth guides on each of the roles (helm, bilge, flex, main cannon).

Join the Sea of Thieves discord and check the new-swabbie-lfc channel. People regularly post in there looking to help out new players.

Join groups on social media and ask if anyone could give you a lesson. You'd be surprised how willing people are to help out.

I have a guild for people who want to learn PVP. Search for the Reckless Noob Alliance in the guild recruitment forum and see if you meet the requirements (there are no requirements for levels or hours of play). If you don't meet the requirements for my guild, there will be plenty of others who will have you.

Solo sloop hourglass is absolutely brutal and you will lose 90 - 95% of your matches when you first start, but as a PVP crash course, there's nothing better.

Take my advice and do what I wish I'd done when I first started. Take some recordings of your battles. Watch them back in a few weeks and laugh at how bad you used to be.

If you have any specific questions or want more specific advice, send me a message. I'm happy to help, and I guarantee I'm not the only one. This is a very social game and the best way to play, learn, have fun, and avoid burnout, is by making friends.

  • While i would be up for a tutorial to teach some of the stuff for pvp, i cant think for the life of me how it could be done since most of it boils down to learning how to prioritize on the fly. Cause some times you need to know when you need to bucket and fix, and other times you just need to bucket. Some times in very specific situations you will need to board the enemy ship even if you have a hole or 2.

The only things that could be tought that you dont have to just get game sense for would be the basics you do when fighting skeleton ships in the fleet.

  • This could be an interesting add to the Sea Dogs Tavern... have "Tutorial Table" where a Portal underneath the tavern opens up to the Sea of the Damned where you can partake some combat scenarios that ramp up in difficulty, teaching the different elements of PVP. Like the first one would have just an AI ship do some basic attacks, and you have to prioritize fixing holes, bilging, etc. And after it goes over some basics it puts you in progressively more and more difficult ones.

They could also utilize the ropes course around the tavern, add some training dummies, etc. Could Turn that area into a learning more of the game area. "Lesedi's Pirate Training Academy"

  • I would say watch some content creators with tutorials like Blurbs and just play the game in high seas and try to sink any ship you spot using what you learned in the tutorials, you will sink a lot but's that just part of the experience on learning to attack in the waves.
