Twitch Drops not advertised enough?

  • I didn’t learn about this last twitch drop till the last few hours, only got the first two cosmetics. I try keep an eye on community news and such, but the only announcement I saw was after having to sign in here. I don’t have time to sign in often, usually I check the site news section and such as I have seen twitch drops reported there, but not this time. Kind of bummed that the one I missed actually had some sails and figurehead.

  • Most games dont seem to advertise their twitch drops much if they have frequent ones. I have noticed that it tends to fall to the sot content creators to announce them most of the time.

  • @terowulfman sigh

I saw the announcement weeks ago, but forgot. Social Media is not a Rare strongpoint.

  • I saw the Twitch Drops being mentioned earlier this August, though I found out easily through people complaining on Twitter/X. There's also a chance the community subreddit that isn't owned by Sea of Thieves in the slightest, may have also talked about it.

They also advertise incoming/activated Twitch Drops on their YouTube, and assumedly, their Facebook page if they remotely use it a lot

Even though I'm not in the Official Discord, there are also several Discords related to Sea of Thieves and content creators that also feature a specialized discord bot that announces when any Twitch drop related to Sea of Thieves starts.

This was also how I found out about some spontaneous Rising Morningstar Twitch Drops that weren't publicized anywhere recently, they were being offered for a foreign, non-english Sea of Thieves competition most Primary English-speaking players would have never heard of.

In a way, they do advertise their Twitch Drops enough, but it's very much a "frequent social media enjoyer" kind of thing at times if they don't mention it in any Sea of Thieves News videos prior.

  • Social media. Get them on Twitter and hit the bell for notifications for all tweets, that way you’ll never miss a thing, that’s what I’ve done for the last few years now.

  • You kind of have to be tuned into their social media channels to keep up to date with these things. If you're inclined to forget, that's what phone reminders are perfect for.

That said, they do have the ability to announce things in-game on the main menu now, so I wonder if this is another perfect use for that feature?

  • I was going to say they are, but in reality my friendship group remind each other. It is out there but not that prominent

I recall the front end menu does show that "Twitch Drops are happening" via the "What's New" tab, but it's never specific as they expect you to visit their website/view their socials to see what's being offered.

  • Okay, so I see my problem is that I don’t use social media that much. I don’t even have a Twitter, and without an account I don’t know how to view their recent posts. I did catch the last twitch drop, but I remember it being mentioned in a news post on this site or something. I do have a discord but check it infrequently, even less frequently am I on FB. Hmm, tricky seas to navigate.

  • @unleet1 I think this is the page I’ve been looking for, but kind of shows if you don’t know where to look, you’ll miss things.

  • @terowulfman So lets nail this down, random announcements on random platforms is not cutting it.

    IMHO, others welcome.

    • There should be the following announcements for all out of game content, like Twitch drops
    • There should be an announcement well in advance, a few weeks
    • The should be a second announcement the day before and/or (?) the day of the event
    • The announcement should be on ALL supported social media platforms EACH time
    • The announcement should be on the forums EACH time
    • If it is not being used for a in game event the countdown in the forum header should also be used

@triheadedmonkey aka Dog Toy should alert the social media team of "our" decision" :)*

  • 👀

As far as I am aware, Drops are announced via most Social channels and the Official Discord.

I'll try and make sure to post here (on the Forums...not actually HERE) in future when I can.

As for the Morningstar drops, they were organised by Twitch Taiwan and were not a Sea of Thieves event which is why you won't have seen any announcements on our channels. Please refer to Twitch for further information.

You can also always check https://www.twitch.tv/drops/campaigns for current and future Drops Campaigns (not sure how far in the future they show)

Right. But how many bother to read the What's New section? I know I never do. Especially if it's just a generic post. Might it be more effective to have a pin like they do for issues at the top of the main menu?

I've never missed a single Twitch Drop myself, but it seems we always get posts like this not long afterwards.

  • Nevermind, the wonderful Liz DID post a reminder https://www.seaofthieves.com/community/forums/topic/160845/twitch-drops-watch-enjoy-get-rewarded-from-10am-august-18th-10am-august-21st-times-utc/1

  • @triheadedmonkey That is the one I saw but it was so more than a week before the event and I forgot. There should be another the day before and it should be on the forums and all of the social media outlets Rare uses.

  • Xitter is the place to get SoT stuff. Unfortunately. The forums here are pretty quick to pick up on and "suggest other options" aka complaining it wasn't in the in game news or on the forums.

You can announce in game. 'Twould be best...

  • @triheadedmonkey the banner that can be added and removed by the team in the main menu to give us server warnings etc should advertise stuff to players. That way everyone can see it, this makes so much more sense to drive engagement to streamers. Plus it’s more in your face than the “what’s new?” section.

  • If you’re in the SoT discord, you can get notification pings for a specific channel instead of the entire server. Just follow the live-events channel, that’s where the twitch drops are posted. They also post about certain other things in that channel, but it’s not an “anything goes” channel. Just twitch drops, special events, time limited things mostly.

  • Twitter.
    Discord.
    Facebook.
    Our website.

I believe there was an Instagram story as well but they vanish after 24 hours. It should have also been under the 'What's New' section in the game UI.

There's also the option to follow our live-events channel on Discord and have it post to any Discord server you use, that way you don't miss out on anything when it comes to drops or in-game events. We try to cater to as many social platforms as we can and from the minute we do the 'Drops are live' announcements people have 72 hours to get 4 hours of watch time done on Twitch for the Drops.

With regards to a banner in-game - these are used for game-impacting things and server downtime. They are not used for marketing.

  • @terowulfman

I want to get the obsidian pistol, and the only viable way to get it until there's a perk that includes it in the game pass, but I don't have Twitch. I'll find a way to get that pistol and then the blunderbuss cuz I have the obsidian guns, but is there an obsidian sword?

  • Doesn't matter where you post it, someone will complain that they didn't see it.

I don't do anything or follow anything/anyone on twitter and I'm not a part of any of the big discord servers

If I were to recommend a habit for this it would be to bookmark the sot category on twitch and sort high to low and then once a day check it, during drops there will be a bunch of drops titles, it'll be pretty easy to notice

then you don't gotta read the forums or twitter or get involved in discord servers

I'd say that's probably the most effective way to keep up without having to change much other than adding a click to your day
