Sea of Thieves Anniversary Update Feedback

  • I made a post of feedback, but I figured I might as well meld it into here instead of a whole new thread.
I played the Anniversary update with much glee, and although I enjoyed most of what I've experienced thus far, there were a few small things that I noticed and thought about, which I'll list here.

    FISH RUNNING INTO ENVIRONMENT
There's already been some talk about it here, but I'll bring it up as well. There seems to be a some complaints about fish running into a rock or dock pole and snapping you off. While I can understand some people's frustration, I don't mind it to a degree. Having been a fisherman since I was barely three (15 total years of it, in both fresh and salt water) I know that this is a very common behavior of fish when they're hooked, they will duck into rock holes or around logs and structure in an attempt to free themselves. However,I agree it is a bit annoying that you cannot do anything to stop it, so perhaps reeling in while a fish is struggling in a direction will stop it moving temporarily, at the risk of having it spit your hook?

    MEGALODON MEAT
While sailing with a friend yesterday, we encountered two Crested Queens and a Shadowmaw. While I don't mind that fact (unknown to me if the spawn rate was intentionally buffed or we just got lucky) I found it a bit odd that the new meat you get from killing one is simply called "Megalodon". I think maybe the developers forgot to change the placeholder name before release, or maybe they meant it that way, but I definitely find it a bit immersion breaking that it is not called "Megalodon Flesh" or something similar.
(NOTE: while I have yet to encounter a Kraken since the update, I assume the name issue is the same, the meat it drops simply named "Kraken")

    FISHING VISUAL BUG
There seems to be a bug while fishing, in which you'll have a line in the water and be fishing, but visually your rod will still be in the overhead, about to cast position. Not at all gamebreaking and its to be expected for day one release, but just putting it out. I'm gonna submit a ticket for it and hopefully it'll be patched soon.

    THE HUNTER'S CALL QUESTS
Despite the title, the new Hunter's Call company does not seem to have any voyages. I think it would fit well for them to issue two different types of angling themed quests to keep players like me "hooked" on the fishing mechanic.

To catch a certain list of different fish varieties, like the merchant animal quests. Example:
You must catch one Ruby Splashtail, one Olive Plentifin, and one Moss Islandhopper and bring them to ___ seapost by ___ date & time. This could also be done for the other meats that were added, like chicken, snake, pork, shark, and even the kraken and meg meat.
A voyage where you get sent for a specific trophy fish, not minding of color, IE just a Trophy Splashtail instead of a Trophy Ruby Splashtail. This voyage should give out much more than the trophy fish would by itself.
Both of these voyages would start out by requesting more common species, like Splashtails and Plentifins, and begin asking for the more uncommon catches as you level up your reputation with The Hunter's Call.
    MOUNTING TROPHY FISH
Like the look of a trophy fish you just hauled up? Wishing you could display it on your humble fishing sloop? Well, why not?
Why not be able to take a trophy fish to the shipwright. by pressing "X" on xbox to turn it in, it will become a mount on a board, and can then can be equipped to your ship like any other cosmetic, and could be displayed above the voyage table on all three ships. Only one fish could be displayed on the mount, as turning in a new trophy fish to the shipwright would delete the old one and the new fish would be the one on display. Like all cosmetics, the trophy mount would remain in your ship customization chest even after you log off.

  • @galactic-geek There's not enough time in the day to play!

I had a 4 hour session yesterday that started off with some fishing and then went to arena. Was a lot of fun. Little disappointed with the rewards for hunters call. Very little gold even for trophy fish. I'll have to try and find some of the rarer species.

Can't wait to do tall tales!

My only complaint so far is arena matchmaking, which they are aware of, and swordplay. Not being able to chain hits off the environment feels awful with the extended miss penalty. I suppose I'll have to get used to it.

Not specific to the anniversary update, but it would be really great if you guys could bring over HDR support to the PC. It's very odd that there isn't feature parity here with the Xbox version. I was hoping it would be added with this update but I can't find confirmation that it has.

I recently purchased a 4K TV and would love to sit back and play Sea of Thieves on PC at its fullest potential from the comfort of my couch.

Its in the patch notes under the Anniversary Updates button:

High Dynamic Range – Support has been improved for HDR-compatible screens on PC. Players can access a ‘HDR Calibration’ page within their Settings to calibrate the brightness of the display.

  • @d3adst1ck thanks!

I did a control F search on the patch notes for "HDR" prior to posting but my browser refused to show me any results.

  • Tonight, me and my crew try Arena! Will post my thoughts on the morrow :)

  • @katttruewalker

No dude you dont understand, I'm mad because all the new damage maked it IMPOSSIBLE to repair as a solo if your mast breaks. You're anchored, you cant move till you fix the mast, and they have infinite cannonballs. Try it. You'll see. I stress that this is when you are playing solo, but either way skeletons shouldnt be able to just dump cannonhalls into you for 30 minutes without having to re-arm same as players do, like a 15 second downtime while they "reload" or have to to to a barrel. All im saying is try solo repairing a broken mast while still in island cannon range. I'll uninstall my game if you can prove you did it.

  • I think it's overall great, with some polish needed. Logged on and started fishing as my crew wouldn't be on til later. Second fish I caught on a wreck by Sanctuary was a non-trophy snow wrecker worth 1850g! I think fish values are mostly fine. I'm already closing in on Hunter's Call 20. Meg and Kraken meat I think still need a slight increase.

Defeated a kraken (I think people that were having trouble with it will find it to be much more manageable now that it can't inhale you off the ship from below deck) got 9 pieces of meat for a grand total of 1350g. Somewhere between current value and 500g per piece would seem rewarding without going too far. Mainly because 9 pieces by far is the high mark for how much I've found. Usually more like 3-5 pieces.

The new ship damage plus the harpoons are great! I get why some people are complaining but, about the only complaint I see that's valid is regarding skeleton ship CCB use. If you're getting constantly bombarded with jigballs and sleep balls, it becomes a little too much about luck than skill to come out on top. I'd say either skeleton ships need the rate they can fire CCBs nerfed, or CCBs need to have diminishing returns applied to them.
The other one is taking a look at Devil's Roar lava projectiles from the volcanoes and how they're behaving. If I'm looking at a volcano, see the rocks shoot out, then get killed/sunk because I couldn't/wasn't able to avoid, then fine obviously. If I'm watching each volley of rocks, see that nothing should be landing within hundreds of feet of me, turn to do something, and get killed by a rock anyways before I hear the next volley fire off...that's a problem. Especially with the new damage.

  • @Galactic-Geek

They need to refine the food inventory system and this something that I have been advocating for change.

As a matter in fact I was watching a stream today of Sea of Thieves and the streamer had the exact same concerns abot the food inventory system.

Wit the introduction of many more varied foods, cooking and fishing, they need to compartmentalize the certain food items accordingly:

    • Fruits and Cooked Meat (Slot1) - All fruits and cooked meats need to be in a separate slot and should only contain 5 items.
    • Fish and Raw meat (Slot2) - All fish that are caught or raw meat should be in a separate slot and should contain 5 items.

Currently the limitation on food item slots make it very cumbersome to manage the inventory of the character and transferring items to barrels.

This would also solve the accidentally eating of raw fish/meat or even accidentally eating that trophy fish your just caught.

The same model should be followed that they used for the cannonballs and cursed cannonballs.

  • And by the way all, the Tall Tales are absolutely amazing.

The style of game play is amazing and it forces players to think. LOVE IT!!!

  • I haven't had much time to play the new update myself but have been catching a few streamers doing Arena mode. WOW the open chat in tavern before and after is toxic. I am shocked to hear so many racist slurs over and over again.

I'm down with this so long as the raw foods lose the ability to restore health. Having access to another 5 pieces of food is too much on top of being able to have a 5 stack of pineapple/kraken/meg

  • @KattTruewalker - A note for those of you at RARE.

I feel like this is a great post to tell my story. A buddy of mine and I have been Huge SoT fans since the beginning. We weren't lucky enough to be part of the alpha, but we started on the beta and never looked back (well... kinda never). We have been with Sea of Thieves since day one and experienced all the frustrations: from repetitive missions to crooks hollow or snake island for snakes and pigs to the lack of friends as everyone considered it "boring" or "repetitive" and stopped playing with us. We toughed it out and hit Legend after quite a few months of playing as much as possible. After that accomplishment, we stopped... Athena was all that was left and some of the intermittent updates really just made sailing more difficult and frustrating than it gave us more to do.
Fast forward to this anniversary update. We have both been waiting for this game to be what we all knew it could be. Now that it is out, we are both extremely impressed. I have read through the comments and responses so far. Complaints about matchmaking, Tall Tales being "extended riddles", and difficulty being too high to be enjoyable. While everyone is more than entitled to their opinion, from two very big fans that have held on hope even through disappointment, we LOVE IT. This finally feels like the pirate world we wanted. There are ancient secrets that require a clever mind and experience in the game to solve. The depth of Items now makes us feel like we are part of a world instead of just scraping the surface. We honestly enjoy everything so much that I don't want to extend this already exhaustive reply with details.
An important note that I'd like to leave is this. We were always disappointed that the game felt like it was released too early. We worried the player base suffered because of it. But now that we are legends and this new content is out, I can't help but feel like the first year of SoT really built my character. My pirate has grey hair and is old, tatted, and scarred. He has been through a lot and I feel like all of what we have accomplished together has made us into the excellent pirates we are today. Seeing the subtlety of the new riddles relying on knowledge we built over hundreds of hours without even realizing it. Feeling like my pirate has grown and changed in this world because I have through it... These are things I've never had in a game. Not WoW or any MMO. It's not leveling up. I feel like I have lived in this place and seen it grow and been molded by it. It is honestly a beautiful thing and I will always have a special place in my heart for this game because of it.

Anyway... Sorry if this is TLDR.

I think my friend and I are exactly the people you targeted this game towards. And from the bottom of both of our hearts I really want to say YOU DID IT. I don't get to pretend to be a pirate now while carrying crates or running cargo. I am a Pirate now! and a damn fine one at that. Thank you RARE for making a childhood dream into a reality. I'm sorry not everyone appreciates it. But we do. We REALLY REALLY do.

And for those of you complaining.... GIT GOOD SCRUBS!! ;)

  • @galactic-geek I have been anxiously waiting for and hoping that the "campaign" would finally provide a fun solo experience but so far after 4 1/24hrs I have had zero luck even completing the first task. The first attempt was the most successful, I actually had the crab totem and was trying to find a place to open the hidden door until a couple of far more experienced players stole the totem from my hands and took over my campaign(I left the game immediately). The second attempt another player got to the ancient chest before I could reach it and the chest did not respawn so I had no option of continuing any further. Am I playing incorrectly? I cannot be the only person having these experiences. Also, Is completing an entire chapter or task the only way to save progress? This seems to require a very lengthy play session if you want to make any progress. Hoping that I'm doing something wrong, This seems like it could be such an amazing game.

  • @capt-niteshade People are moaning a bit but honestly, it is the least I have ever seen for an update.

  • @derschneider13 said in Sea of Thieves Anniversary Update Feedback:

New ship damage makes soloing a really tough go if you get caught BY THE INFINITE CANNONBALLS OF ISLAND SKELETONS. I just spent 30 minutes trying in vain to escape the insanely avcurate AND I STRESS INFINITE cannonballs of two island skeletons while solo playing, only to finally sink and lose 2 voyages worth of loot.

All im asking, make them have to go find more cannonballs too, because trying to raise my mast while getting blown 20 feet away every 8 seconds when they fire was an excersise in frustration and futility. Like seriously i used 80 wood on that ship. Thats too many computerised shots when im literally trapped in their range with a broken mast. -1, unhappy solo ragequit

I suffered from this exact issue not once, but twice yesterday. Worst situation ever!

  • So I tried arena with my crew last night, Loved It! From performing shanties in the hot tub between matches with rival pirates, to battling other ships.. The whole thing is brilliant, even though we finished last twice and 3rd once out of 3 matches, it was still loads of fun losing, and we still got some rep! We also felt that after just 3 matches our combat and teamwork skills improved loads.. Can't wait to see how this mode grows in the future! Just need to try tall tales now...

I would suggest filling your pockets with fruits, then go fishing for an hour. I think you will share the frustration and observations I have made.

  • @friedwilly so you're basically telling me to go waste my time when I agreed with your idea, but with a slight change?

  • @geoffman72 said in Sea of Thieves Anniversary Update Feedback:

I must have misunderstood your statement, my apologies.

  • @Friedwilly All good!

I've had another idea though to build on what you suggested. What about a fish stringer as a tool instead of a separate inventory? You could store 5-10 fish on it and they wouldn't be consumable. Secondary fire could even be a pose where you display all your catches.

  • The main flaw in the matchmaking in Arena, I believe, is carried over from adventure mode. When a person leaves an open crew in adventure mode, the slot doesn't automatically open up. It takes several minutes for someone to actually join. I have tested this with teammates. The person who left or was dropped is able to join back up but not anybody else. They probably made it this way to allow people who disconnect to get their spot back without it being filled by a random. I think arena is working this way in the lobby. If that's the case, they should remove that behavior immediately.

I like that idea, I had the same thought the other night as I was fishing.

  • @capt-niteshade I hadn't thought about it, but your experience clearly shows that Arena is a great way to figure out whether a certain group of players will either mesh well over time, or become an exercise in frustration, which makes Arena a great tool for crew training using the sink or swim mentality.

Has anyone been doing fruit-swapping? I upgrade my fruit every chance I get. If I have a banana, I swap it out for a coconut, and so on up the list (having 5 pineapples is rare). With that said, I haven't exactly figured out the meat-healing/regeneration values yet. If you know what they are, please let me know!

For those of you who may not know, the fruit from best to worst (in terms of health gained) is: pineapple, mango, pomegranate, coconut, and banana.

My insightful friend asked today: "Why do we have to find bait in barrels? Why not just use the shovel to dig them up?"

  • @galactic-geek Absolutely. Oh hi there pineapple! Banana, it was never going to work out. You were just going to sit on the ship for when my health was at 90% and I needed a top off without using "good" fruit. I'm sorry.

  • @geoffman72 You ever get shot in the back, go to pull out a fruit, and realize that all you've got is a banana? 😅

  • @galactic-geek

    Two responses to that -

    April 29th - "Phew!"
    April 30th - "Oh no..."

  • PLEASE, create some kind of auto-save feature for the adventure campaign. Just some way to return to a missions progress at another time. By the time I get one or two steps of a mission done(either a key or a chest) its been over an hr or two and I have to stop playing and lose all progress. This would be extremely helpful for people who play alone and do not have half a day at a time to play. Thank you, Love the game other than this issue!
