Making the game creepier.

  • In the best kids movies, they have an element of scary and creepy to really make it feel more real and thrilling for kids.

Examples are (from my youth), the fireplace scene in Home alone 1. Or the kids literally dying to jolly oompa loompa songs in Charlie Chocolate Factory. Pirates of the carribean pirate lore. The list goes on.

Add elements to the lore and game that are deep and dark and mysterious. Below are some ideas off the top of my head that would work towards this ideal for the game.

Have scary sounds that play at certain locations, like cave noises. Or specific areas where death happened, where there is eerie wind that doesn't fully sound like the normal wind, it has a subtle hint of screaming from the souls of the trapped in between life and death.

If there is a dark cave, make an even darker cave. Where the blacks go all the way and you can not see. Put a pair of shimmering eyes in there.

Some times those eyes look at you from the distance ahen you are afk and alone on your boat. And they go away when you move.

Grim reaper, lurking in the shadows.

Extremely rarely, if you look at an island far away with a scope, you see movement. And it is almost humanoid. But its not a player.

Some times, when in a certain area where a skeleton is from a person who died, at night time, if a group of friends plays music together, a faint sound of an even more broken, off tune instrument nobody is playing adds to the music. A faint outline of the ghost can be spotted in the darkness. If lit up by lantern, it disappears.

Statues that move ever so slightly while you look away. But dismiss you as something it doesn't care about and remains still.

    Dark forest island.

Owl hoots at night. Some times sounds a bit like a tribe call (done with hands) if you are at a unique place.

I feel if Rare hired me I could totally come up with a huge amount of this and other world filling yet unintrusive (or additive) to gameplay stuff.

Anybody else got ideas that would make the game creepier?

  • Add Giant spiders.
only for them to add an option to "disable" them when people with fear of spiders complain. Now we fight Blocks that say 'Spider' on it xD

  • The game has a bunch of people that sneak around and hide while recording us and broadcasting it to random people around the world.

The piratical Truman Show is creepy enough imo, lol

  • @zimited8670

I personally would love to see the Ghost of Crooks Hollow fleshed out as actual in-game lore!!

If we were to go down this route, I think it would have to be a more subtle approach. Nothing in your face, but something that slowly develops paranoia in the back of your mind. (I love your idea of owl hoots and cave noises!!)

I like your 'screams in the wind' idea, but I think if it were voices whispering to you, it would have a creepier effect! (especially if they were luring you to treasure or saying something like 'behind you.')

  • @zimited8670 someone hasn't meet The ghost of Crooks Hollow also sot has plenty of scary places and things the thing is most of us have gotten so see to them there no longer scary that's the problem with scary things in games like SoT

    Other examples
    •traps
    •Skeletons with gunpowder kegs
    •the Kraken
    •Deep Water
•Sharks they kinda come out no where

  • Yeah let’s not use common phobias as the base for creepy ideas to add to the game please.

Atmospheric horror has always been better to me than stuff that chases or jumps out at you. Even the forest on melee island gives me the creeps cause of the depth and lighting, more of that!

  • @tesiccl The depth stuff there is great. And I'd say stuff jumping out at you wouldn't be as creepy as the subtle examples I have in mind. Like in Minecraft back in the day where it all felt so lonely and lost. Herobrine being a very real myth that was based on the imagination we had from the game back in the day.

  • @lucky11 Exactly! Creepiness from the subtle details

  • If you have played all the Tall Tales, in particular those dealing with the Sea of the Damned, you would know by now how unsettling some elements of the game are. Figure this out: you are trapped in a piratical purgatory bound to fight, die, return and fight again, worthy of a voyage for Virgil and Dante (the poets not the Devil May Cry guys)

  • @zimited8670 whether creepy or not I definitely think some more ambience sound goes a long way, like the echo cave effect in pl hideout
