Rubberbanding and Microstutter Troubleshooting Summary (High‑End PC)

  • I’ve been trying to solve persistent rubberbanding, microstutter, and short lag spikes in Sea of Thieves, despite running the game on a very powerful system. The stutters mainly occur when the game loads new assets (going on land, enemies spawning, new areas, sudden events, etc.).
    The key point:
    Every other game I play runs perfectly — no stutter, no lag, no issues at all.
    This problem is exclusive to Sea of Thieves.

    My System Specs

    • GPU: Nvidia RTX 5080
    • CPU: Intel 9800X3D
    • RAM: 32 GB DDR5 6400 MHz
    • Storage: NVMe M.2 SSD
    • Monitor: 49" ultrawide (5120×1440)
    • Mouse polling rate: tested 1000 Hz and 500 Hz (500 Hz reduces stutter)
    • Network: wired connection, modern network card
    • Software/Firmware:
    • Latest Nvidia GPU drivers installed
    • Latest BIOS version installed
    • Latest chipset drivers installed
    • Windows fully updated
    • Monitor firmware up to date
      Everything on the system is fully updated to the newest available versions.
      The hardware is far beyond what the game requires.

    Graphics Settings & Display Testing
    I’ve tested every possible graphics combination:
    Graphics settings

    • All presets tested: Low, Medium, High, Ultra
    • All individual settings adjusted
    • Only one setting noticeably affects stutter:
      Model Detail = Medium (less stutter than High/Ultra)

    Resolution & scaling

    • Native ultrawide resolution
    • Tried downscaling the resolution
    • Tried different scaling modes in Nvidia Control Panel
    • Fullscreen, Windowed (Fullscreen is best)

    FPS caps

    • Tested 60, 90, 120, 144 FPS
    • Tested Uncapped
    • Stutter happens regardless of FPS limit

    Sync & latency

    • V‑Sync off in-game
    • V‑Sync off in Nvidia Control Panel

    Nvidia Control Panel

    • Low Latency Mode = Off
    • V‑Sync = Off
    • Confirmed the game uses the RTX 5080
    • Tested different power modes (Adaptive / Prefer maximum performance)

    Windows & System Settings

    • Hardware Accelerated GPU Scheduling (HAGS) disabled
    • Xbox Game Bar + all capture features disabled
    • Shader cache cleared
    • Tested both latest and older Nvidia drivers

    Mouse & Input

    • 1000 Hz polling → more stutter
    • 500 Hz polling → smoother
    • DPI and Windows sensitivity adjusted

    Network & Network Card Troubleshooting
    I’ve also ruled out network issues:

    • Wired Ethernet connection
    • Tried different router ports
    • Restarted router/modem
    • Updated network card drivers
    • Disabled offload features (LSO, checksum offload, etc.)
    • Tested with and without IPv6
    • No packet loss or instability in any other online game
      All other online games run flawlessly, so this is not a general network problem.

    Other Tests

    • Tried running the game on a secondary monitor
    • Disabled overlays (Discord, Steam, Nvidia, MSI Afterburner)
    • Ensured the game does not launch on integrated graphics
    • Tested clean Windows boot with minimal background processes
    • Tried different window modes
    • Tried different USB ports for the mouse

    Current Conclusion
    Despite all of the above, rubberbanding and microstutter still occur during sudden events in Sea of Thieves.
    Since every other game works perfectly, this strongly suggests the issue is related to:

    • Sea of Thieves’ asset streaming system
    • An engine-level bug that becomes more noticeable on high-end hardware
    • A conflict between Windows, Nvidia drivers, and the game’s rendering pipeline
    • Reflex/latency-related bugs specific to this title
      It does not appear to be caused by my hardware or my system configuration

    Does anyone have a solution or workaround?
    At this point I’ve exhausted every option I can think of.
    If anyone has experienced similar issues — or found a fix, workaround, or even a theory — I would really appreciate any input.

  • I've had a similar issue. I had been hunting down a solution for the frametime issues I've had in a few games, with Sea of Thieves performing the worst.
    I was also at the point where I exhausted all my options until I accidentally discovered a solution to my issues. I saw a few people on Reddit talking about performance issues with a particular BIOS update on their motherboards, so I went ahead and flashed the new update for my MSI B550. I ran my typical benchmarks (In-game), and I noticed the average FPS went down about 15 FPS; however, the frametime and average framerates were the smoothest I've ever experienced, which confused me. I did some digging around, and found out when I updated the BIOS, my RAM XMP settings were reverted, and I was running at 2666 MHz instead of the rated 3600 MHz. I went back in and overclocked my RAM, and my benchmarks were back to a laggy, stuttery mess.

    Maybe it's just the Corsair RAM that I have, but it seems that even the factory-rated frequencies on some computer hardware aren't fully stable. All I had to do was tweak the memory and FCLK clocks, and everything was better than ever.

    I saw the most significant improvement after changing these:

    • Underclocked my DDR4 Ram (-200MHz): 3600MHz to 3200MHz and FCLK 1800 to 1600 (FCLK is 1/2 the main memory clock)

    • Set up page file in memory on my NVME drive for Windows (Apparently, this is needed for some programs to run efficiently)
