SoT needs One Piece.

  • In 2026, Sea of Thieves is the premier multiplayer pirate simulator game on every platform. Players swashbuckle, exchange pistol fire, cannon fire, and eat fruit to replenish their health. However, SoT is not the first franchise that comes to mind when someone casually mentions pirates and fruit. That honour is held by none other than One Piece.
Sea of Thieves is not a construct of Disney or LucasArts, yet Jack Sparrow and Guybrush Threepwood live inside the game. Sea of Thieves deserves leadership that can bridge the gap between different pirate franchises and make a deal! If Rare doesn’t soon make concerted effort to bring Luffy, the world of One Piece, and Devil Fruits with magic powers to the game (they’d work no different than eating the existing enchanted merfruit), then they don’t deserve the hoards of fans and money that would come with doing so.

Frankly, SoT is game about pirates eating fruit, existing at a time when a BILLION DOLLAR Pirates eating Fruit Manga is the longest running, most popular Pirates franchise in history. To not engage at all with a One Piece crossover would be the most obvious sign that the developers’ love for the game, for their fans, for potential new fans, and for money, is all but lost.

Cmon Rare! Let me scour the beaches of Sea of Thieves looking for a Devil fruit that takes away my ability to swim and turns my Left Arm into a Cannon/Flamethrower/Horn of Winds/Harpoon or whatever you can come up with!

Also Oysters! The game needs oysters.

  • I would love One Piece to have some cosmetics for this game!

    uuuuh..

SoT doesnt mention fruit as it main "item"

Think that why they wont go that far

  • While I enjoy some Anime, I could never really get into One Piece. I don’t hate it or something, it’s just not my cup of tea.

I recently watched the second season of Netflix‘ real life adaptation and I‘m sorry, but this show doesn’t remind me of a pirate story at all. While the main character constantly keeps repeating he‘s going to be the pirate king one day … they actually never do any pirate related stuff. They may be adventurers for sure, but pirates? Not really.

The last few episodes also got really weird with this purple reindeer-monster trying to be a medical doctor for whatever reason.

From what I’ve seen so far, nothing would actually fit into Sea of Thieves very well.

  • @fred-fisheye Being a "Pirate" just means the government doesn't like what you're doing, and they're trying to kill you for it. It doesn't actually necessitate you do anything specific to achieve the label.

Actually the definition of piracy is:

Acts of robbery, criminal violence, or hijacking committed by attackers aboard a ship or boat against another vessel or coastal area. It is typically done to steal cargo or take hostages on the "high seas" (international waters outside the jurisdiction of any country)

SOT has all the elements to be a game about piracy. One Piece it's a mutants and creatures' manga and just because disguises as a pirate story has nothing to do with piracy.

  • @fred-fisheye Even if you aren’t a fan of One Piece, One Piece still has literally 1 billion fans. That’s more potential earnings that SoT has ever made. A One Piece Tall Tale Arc could bring over a million downloads in a single week…

By this definition, everyone who’s seen as an opponent to the government of a state could be considered a pirate. If that would be correct, everyone who’s, for example, fighting for democracy under the rule of dictatorial regime would be a pirate.

But to be on the safe side, I looked up the origin of the word „Pirate“:

The greek word peira (πεῖρα), which meant an "attempt," "trial," or "endeavor", later evolved into the verb peiraomai (πειράομαι), meaning "I attempt" or "I attack," and eventually led to the noun peiratēs (πειρατής), which literally translated to "one who attacks ships".

I‘m not denying that this could be a profitable business idea. Just saying it doesn’t fit very well into Sea of Thieves.

  • Well I don't think that creator of One Pice would allow for that right now it would be just bad press for him.

But on topic: live series inspired cosmetic would probably sells neatly, but im kinda sure that's right now off table.

  • I wouldn't call Sea Of Thieves a pirate "simulator." It's more like a pirate themed party game.

I have no objection to Rare introducing Tall Tales that reach beyond the Sea Of Thieves world, as you said they did it with Disney & Lucas Arts IP's. I have no idea about one Piece, I'm not an anime guy at all but if it was a good Tall Tale series it might make me want to go and check out the show.

I like people who think outside the box anyway so I'm inclined to support the OP!

  • @xdreegan

    Historically:

Legally, a pirate is anyone who commits robbery, violence, or hijacking on a body of water without state authorization.

  • Know nothing about One Piece but as long as it fits the style of the game, the devs implement it properly, and it'll attract new players: absolutely go for it, yes.

  • One Piece would be super cool. However with SoT and Rare's dwindling reputation i doubt the creator of one piece would go for it. Sea of thieves is not in the same league as one piece.

  • @weekend-manager I sadly have to agree. If there WAS a chance, it'd more than likely be a crossover with the Netflix live action series, but you're right that even they probably wouldn't touch this game/studio given current events.

And when they have state authorization it's called "Privateering". The most important key being permission from the State.
