A Perspective: How to Make Clothing, Vanity, and Emote Cosmetics More Meaningful

  • I have played a good deal of Grounded lately, and in that backyard, the children may have a tiny perspective, but they can still see their torsos, legs, and arms when climbing and performing other actions.

I would like to see SoT adjust to have a similar perspective change - being able to see your shirts, jackets, tattoos, scars, pants, belt, and boots in 1st-person perspective (1PP) while running, jumping, etc. or your hands and gloves while climbing ladders, would significantly increase the importance and meaning behind having such cosmetics.

In a lot of other games today, you can even see emotes in 1PP - I think that too would be a great quality of life update.

Please keep in mind, that while Grounded also has a 3rd-person perspective (3PP), that is not what I'm asking for here.

  • I've mentioned this on and off since launch now. It is still one of the things I most want to see in a game all about cosmetics. I shouldn't have to Emote to regularly see as much of my stuff as possible.

And give me a few more interaction animations. Let me see my arms working the sail rigging, grabbing the cannons and harpoons, climbing a ladder, repair stuff, etc. If it is an interactable object I should see myself using it like with the wheel.

  • @galactic-geek I was thinking that maybe...MAYBE...this game should add a 3-person view. Like it is in GTA5 where you can switch between views.

  • @freakwood09 that would not be great for this kind of game honestly. This would skew heavily in favor of 3rd person being the meta because of how you can look around the corners of cover without risk of being hurt doing it (which you can't in first person) and being able to see all around you for threats. You would be penalizing yourself by choice playing in first person in this kind of game if there was a choice not to. Since they want that immersive experience and want people in first person, it just won't work here.

  • @redeyesith Yes, I'm afraid of that, too. I just want to see more of the image of the pirate that you've been putting together for so long. Or got the skin.

  • @freakwood09 yea, but we do have Emotes for the full looks, which would feel better if we could see the other stuff more often.

They could also try and pull a RDR2 move and have some mirrors in various places (maybe even try to cram one on the Ships) so we could see ourselves that way in game too and still get that immersive feel they strive for.

No, because that would drastically change the gameplay and not be a QoL update - that is not what this discussion is about, and I don't want it to become about that, so please stay on topic.

Besides, 3PP inside the ships would be a nightmare.

  • @redeyesith Fortnite really like the skins and how they are seen)

  • @galactic-geek I'd like to see a rough iteration sent to the Insiders, just to see how it would feel... Alas, we don't typically get to see the very early versions of things in this game...

I personally think I'd like this idea, but I'm not sure if they'd give it much of a chance before declaring it not worth the effort should it fail.

  • @klutchxking518 Well, why do you think it would fail?

  • @galactic-geek Might look weird, some players won't like that it takes up their screen.

Have you seen how little screen-space it takes up in Grounded? If not, check out the link I posted above and give it a watch. It's not a whole lot, and isn't going to be anywhere near as bad as, say, a blunderbuss being aimed.

  • Yea I agree with this, the only cosmetics you need to worry about are glove, tattoos, curses, equipment, and weapons. Only ever see your pirate when you die or if you're emoting. We already cant look directly down so its not like it'd be blocking your view looking down when underwater.

Not necessarily - shirt, jacket, dress belt, pants, and boots as well. I, for 1, would love to see my kicking feet as I swim backwards.

  • @galactic-geek oh no, I mean the only ones you Currently need to worry about are those ones, as those are the only ones that can be seen on your hands and arms in first person. I'm saying that if your idea is in, you would then see all the rest of your stuff that you mentioned, which is a good thing.

  • Yes. I feel Sea of Thieves is at a point where POLISH should be prioritised over features at this point.

Improved animations (seeing your hands as you climb, etc) is just one aspect of polish that they could/should focus on

  • Really do like this idea, would be great to see some more 1st person animation! The emote system in grounded is great, even little things like still being able to move while emoting would be amazing to see!

I actually don't like that you can move with the emotes in Grounded - it limits the kinds of emotes that you can have. In any case, thank you for sharing.

  • @galactic-geek not for all of them but being able to point wave ect would be neat

  • @xzodeak It's already easy enough to turn prior to doing the emote.
