The ability to sell other players ships as stolen plunder

  • Once taken over; a players ship can be sold to the Reapers Bones dock for a small amount of ancient coins, doubloons and gold; incentives such as ship and pirate cosmetics for the higher grades and as you accumulate sales.

  • This is an interesting idea, but what counts as a ship being "Taken over"? Because as of right now there is no way to take over one or capture it, barring spawncamping (which is against the rules without ulterior motive like taking supplies/loot or sinking).
If the intention is to simply "take over" and attempt to sail the ship to Reaper's while the enemy try to fight back and take back control, what stops them from simply scuttling, denying you any possible chance at reaching Reapers with their ship? I'm not sure this sort of thing could be worked into the game with all the current systems. Furthermore, something like this already somewhat exists with emissary flags, a definitive mark of a defeated enemy ship.

I wouldn't do this for Ancient coins at all. They need to remain rare, and thus already have a suitable natural way of gaining them a la Ancient Skeletons. If something like this were at all possible, gold and/or doubloons would be more than enough.

  • @silentkiller646 taken over could work when you raise your own flag on that ship so even if they scuttle you will still have a ship which you then sell; however as a caveat only those flying under the Reapers banner can sell these ships.

  • @capn-gucci Then what happens to the pirate? Do they spawn on a "new" ship as if they had sunk? This would eventually lead to too many ships on the server and may cause strain.
If all you need to do is "raise a flag" does that ship then become yours, I.E. you can use cannons, man it, etc or must you simply sail it to Reapers?
Again this just feels like a more clunky and intensive version of how Emissary flags have been designed to function. It would take a lot of workaround to get something like this into the game in a way thats fair, organic, and efficient.

  • @silentkiller646 A delayed timer until they sell the ship to reapers; or they can take back their ship via a ferry of the damned fight where their captured ship is pulled into the sea of the damned and they have a time limit to recapture or hold the ship.

I always found the "No Spawn Camping rule" to be very odd since they do almost nothing in game to actually enforce this rule in game outside of a tip of "You can always scuttle"

But that's the only way to sell someone's ship since the ship is a mobile spawn.

  • @thejoegrizzly They discussed in a podcast, there is no feasible way to police or enforce a rule against spawncamping gameplay-wise that won't impact other accepted areas of the game, but they have outright said they don't condone spawncamping just to spawncamp and impact someones experience in such a way. All they can do is recommend scuttling, for the player's own sake.
That's where the issue arises, there would be no way to "lockdown" someones ship that would be intuitive or fair. At first its an interesting idea, but the implementation unfortunately wouldn't mesh well with the rest of the game, or what's currently in place.

To be fair spawncamping ain't really a thing anymore except in very few situations. If someone wins you in battle and instead of sinking you decides to camp your ship you can take away the fun by scuttling so there is no issue. Actually camping gives you a chance to overcome the enemy and keep your current ship and cargo. Only place I have faced troublesome camping was during earlier adventure when someone was campin at Belle and killed me. Then they proceeded to camp my ship to kill over again to stop me from speaking to Belle. Even then I could just switch server and be done with it.

Just because you have an out doesn't mean there still isn't an issue present or should it be ignored because of that. You should not excuse toxic spawncamping just because you have a way to remove yourself from the situation, it is still toxic behavior that they will continue to do to others if they are not punished for their actions. Actual toxic behavior regarding spawncamping should be reported to Rare and Microsoft to get those players out of the game and teach them some respect for others.

Just to be clear, I am ONLY referring to actual toxic behavior where they are spawncamping a ship or location with no actual in game intentions other than doing it to grief, intentions to make you to quit the session/server/game or just laughs (at someone else's expense). I am aware that due to the design of the game and ships it is an unavoidable thing a lot of times due to the small space on the ships and limited spawn location (as well as the delay in appearing on ship before you can see or have control, THIS definitely needs addressing in these instances) when you are off loading loot or insuring the sink of the ship. I'm also not saying it is a rampant problem like a few try to do around here (as I've only encountered a literal handful of players in the time since launch that would fit the bill), but still a problem that exists due to a few immature players.

But in regards to the OP suggestion, this is just bad. It will increase griefing, enable bad actors in the game, and frustrate less skilled players just trying to play the game. Not to mention a simple scuttle would deny those people the chance of stealing a ship. It is not a well thought out idea, doesn't fit the game, and enables griefing to an unprecedented level.

  • Promoting Gally's or bigger crews to spawncamp a poor solo player till they eventually get to an Outpost and sell their ship seems really silly, on top of that. The solo can just scuttle the ship when they are 10 seconds away from getting "sold" which makes everything a huge waste for both parts
