Increase Lazy-Beard Timer, please!

  • (Edit: Search function isn't working for me right now (server too busy message (haha irony)))

Far too many times I've had to; run to the bathroom, change my boy's diaper, answer the door, take a smoke break, get something to eat/drink, answer the telephone, or whatever else. Far too many times I've been disconnected right as I was re-planting my behind in my Captain's Throne. I understand that idle/afk connections can cause server strain. I understand that idle/afk players are (or can be) viewed as leaches (when sailing with others).

I'm just asking for an additional 5 minutes, or so. It really bites** (mods don't like vacuum cleaners, I guess. LOL) to lose a ship with a full inventory, and a good voyage, to a Lazy-Beard message.

  • @wodyo Most of those situations, couldn't you just take the controller with you to jump every now and again?

  • @lizardspider How long is your keyboard/mouse cord?

And Xbone controllers disconnect pretty fast, especially when the console is in another room. (We have a different room, upstairs, for gaming. For everything I'd need done, is go downstairs.)

Don't get why so many first posters are just saying something random. To get some upvotes?
    ANYWAYS.
I don't think adding time to the Lazybeard really hurts? I'd like to have some more time added too, to do some of these things.

  • @yacantdutchthis It was a serious question. You just assume he's a keyboarder?

And if you are a keyboard/mouse player, you can't figure out how to use the afk-macros? There are solutions out there, if you're smart enough to see them. You could even go low-tech and just use a freaking rubber band.

  • @lizardspider i did not assume anythibg.
If you actually read my post, I typed 2 different scenarios where this may not be possible.
1 being PC player, the other being Xbone player.
YOU are the person who instantly assumed they are using a controller.

Also, macros and rubber bands have nothing to do with the fact that they could also just upper the Lazybeard by 5 minutes.
Really, why are you being so difficult about it?

  • @yacantdutchthis "Also, macros and rubber bands have nothing to do with the fact that they could also just upper the Lazybeard by 5 minutes."

Really? Nothing at all, besides solving their issue at hand? Why beg for 5 more minutes, when you could be good for as long as you're gone? Also, that solution can help them today. How long would the petitioning of the developers plan take?

  • @lizardspider because rubber bands and macros aren’t a game feature. You should have to use a game feature to keep the game playable.

  • @yacantdutchthis said in Increase Lazy-Beard Timer, please!:

@lizardspider because rubber bands and macros aren’t a game feature. You should have to use a non game feature to keep the game playable.

So you start with they aren't. And then in very next sentence, you state, "you should have to use a non game feature..."

Rofl. You want to take another swing at that when you're sober champ, or are you conceding?

  • So... I have never had this problem. Father of two. Smoker. Have a dog. I literally have never been disconnected from inactivity due to afking to deal with my responsibilitys. If your taking so long mayhaps you should just log off. Wont get lazybeard if your not in game.

  • @lizardspider on my phone and playing SoT. But hey, assuming things about others is the best way to go, right?

  • @sirsn34kyfox
Congratulations for being quicker than I am. :) My legs do not carry me as fast as they used to, however. Also, I do log off when I know I'm not going to be able to make it back in time.

@LizardSpider I am a PC player. I do not like having to place a weight on my mouse (which I have done a few times, playing a shanty while I'm away), using a macro, or anything else that's not built into the game. There are enough complaints about people "rubber-banding" their way to Pirate Legend, and I am not fond of adding to that statistic. I do not mind waiting for Dev's to implement my suggestion. Why would you instantly suggest I use third party software, anyways?

@YaCantDutchThis My rig/computer desk is setup in the back of the house, and not mobile by any means. I never did like gaming with a wireless mouse or keyboard (though I've read some reviews recently of some "better" wireless-gaming devices). I've always liked sticking with what I know works best :)

  • Im fine with the timer increase, But i want a vote to kick option added if that is the case.

Why? Players will still be disconnected within a reasonable amount of time of being AFK. The current timer is roughly 10 minutes. 15 minutes is not asking for a whole lot, in my opinion.

  • @wodyo Every other smoke break man...disconnect for me. I can't be gone but 5-6 minutes tops.

15 minutes is a long time if I(really mean me) play for maybe 1 hour in a day. if i do a voyage and want to turn it in but you have been away for 1/4 of the time i want to kick you before turning in.

  • @blappo-spawn
1/6th versus 1/4th... both can be seen as substantial, in terms of one hour.

Most Gold Hoarder's quests I get take well over an hour to complete. You can't sail to 5 different islands (on different ends of the map), digging up 11 different chests, in just 60 minutes. If you're leaving a crewmate behind, after playing for just an hour, then it's You who should be helping more :P

  • @personalc0ffee

    1. I must've missed the rule against thread bumping. So report me... and thanks for the bump :P

    2. I completely agree, that rubber-banding/bots need to be dealt with. However, my suggestion would not make it any easier/harder for those players, as they STILL WOULD NOT BE REMOVED AFTER THE TIME LIMIT. They never allow the timer to begin, because they are constantly in motion. That is the problem!

C'mon. 5 minutes. I'm not asking for much.

  • Dude I get kicked from servers all the time for inactivity just by waiting to log in on the dam server. It's so lame.

  • @blappo-spawn That is the worst option ever created, say you are doing voyages or even better, cleared a skull fort, goin to an outpost to cash in but then some random dudes join in and vote kick you out of your own game... still want that kick option??

Shouldn't have missed any rules, matey.

Not everyone has a photographic memory.

Are you going to take another swing at point #2? :P

    It is lame.

This game takes a lot of time (typically 1.5-3 hours), just to complete a single voyage, playing solo. If I want to risk losing all of my loot & inventory by walking away for an extra 5 minutes, then who am I really hurting aside from myself?

Again, this morning, I start into the world. I do 2 quick inventory runs from the outpost, set my voyage, and arrive at my first destination. This is my first action for the real-world day, since I have real-world things to take care of later in the afternoon. I glance around the horizon and see nobody in sight. My boat was well hidden, so I walk away to make a cup of coffee and wash my face off real quick (off topic: pollen/allergies have driven me nuts lately!). The cats started begging for food/water, so I had to take care of them too.

I take care of these [minor] things as quickly as I can, and walk back to my room (where my gaming-station is). As soon as I walk through the door, I see my screen go from a beautiful sunrise to a Lazybeard disconnect.

This is becoming rage-inducing. LET ME GET MY DAMN COFFEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I don't want to place a paper-weight on my mouse. I don't want to use a macro bot. I don't want to plugin an Xbox Controller with a rubber-band on the sticks. I want 5 extra minutes to take care of real-world matters, without having to forfeit [potentially hours of] game progress!

  • I'm all for disabeling lazy beard for private/ solo crews. With a group of friends you're often re-inviting that person anyway and You're not being rewarded for AFK when solo.

  • honestly I see both sides of this argument. The afk timer is a necessary evil in this game to counter unproductive crew members, but when you are with a crew of friends it can suck. I've had to make a quick macro to let the dog out or answer a call quick but only if I'm playing with my friends and they don't care. I don't do it in combat and only when I need to. Pc has macros, xbox has a rubber band.

  • @ve111a said in Increase Lazy-Beard Timer, please!:

Pc has macros, xbox has a rubber band.

I honestly see both sides of the argument too. I'm not asking to disable the AFK timer, because that could/would lead to issues - even with the private crews now being added.

Using a macro to remain active is the same thing as using third-party software, in the game. Using a rubber-band is a (albeit simple, and lame) third-party hardware modification. These things are being abused to an extreme, and results in a bunch of people complaining about leachers and hackers. I really do not want to put myself in a position to be reported as a "hacker" or a "bot." I've played far too many other MMO's that have bot issues and I don't want to "join them," so to say, lol. I do not want to risk losing my account, or my game progress, because of being falsely accused of something.

Maybe fewer players would feel the need to use macros & rubber bands, if we weren't being disconnected so quickly? I can not fathom Rare being 'okay' with all of the spinning pirates, on the Ferry of the Damned and in the SoT world. Perhaps the private crews will help stop/slow that sort of behavior (I certainly hope so, anyways). But for me, I just need a little extra time to return to my post! Lol

I agree it's just a super fine line for abuse :s Maybe even if they just increased the timer for private crews? I don't know.

Personally, I think the 'spinners' should be detected and kicked. It's well-within their ability to write code to prevent it (I'd hope, lol).

I don't see how an extra 5 minutes could really be abused too bad. I mean... the spinning pirates don't have to worry about the AFK timer. The voyages take so long already, that 5 minutes seems insignificant to me. The biggest potential downside I see is circumstantial, where maybe "I" tell my friend I'll be back in "5 minutes," and end up taking the whole "15." But what, really, can my friend hope to accomplish in 15 minutes, anyways? Not really much? Completing tasks can be very time consuming in this game.

Yea I agree I'm only gone max 10-15 ever at a time. I think what they need to do is have it so as soon as you hit the ferry you are starting your kick timer even if you move. If you don't leave the ferry in, Even 5 minutes, You are kicked. What purpose is there to ever be on the ferry that long. Make a lore out of it. "ye took too long on the ferry, and the ferryman changed his mind and claimed your soul for himself" Ferrybeard

  • Just Rubberband/ Macro, if it's with friends they will not report you if you do this unnanounced with randoms you're asking for a report.

I dont think It's in Rare's inention to kick you out of a game with friends but they have to draw a line somewhere. I often have to feed my baby and come back after, however feeding takes time so I start Teamviewer and just move around abit trough my phone, my friends know this and are ok with it so no harm done.

However I was AFK once while friends were doing a Legendary quest and they wanted me to come back after feeding time so I did the same, then I opened Teamviewer and saw I was in the freey of the damned, excaped looked at crew and saw I was alone in the crew so I just closed the app and when I came to my PC a good 45 minutes later I was still in the ferry and another crew formed around me. I'd much rather been kicked because of inactivity. Mind you I had no Macros running nor did I start Teamviewer in those 45 minutes so I came across as a leech while I was genually being AFK and okay with being lazybeared.

  • @wodyo

I would pick up a cheap Xbox 360 controller if I were you. You can have it plugged in while you play with KBM. When you need to idle, just put a rubber band around the two sticks and walk away. The game will automatically switch over to controller inputs and then back to KBM when you remove the band and use either.

No. I have controller(s). This is not something I want to partake in. I should not have to do something that the majority of the community views as cheating, just to stay active in the game. It's absurd, really! :(

  • Why is "just cheat" the first response from most of you? Lol :(

There is nothing wrong with it if your crew agrees to it.

  • @warmedxmints

I do not agree with you there... nor do I think the majority of the community agrees, judging by the incessant complaints about the matter. If the AFK timer is there "for a reason," then it should not be so easily subverted. Rare should do something to address the issue, beyond private/closed crews.

Again, I'm just asking for 5 more minutes. From 10 minutes, to 15 minutes. I shouldn't have to use third-party software, or ridiculous controller modifications, just to stay in the game for 5 more minutes.

  • You are kicked out for being honest when AFK players in the ferry of the dead are there for hours...
