Idea For A "Tortuga" Hub-Like Island Without Safe Zones

  • As its been said before, Sea of Thieves needs a "Tortuga" like island / city in it bubbling over with pirates ready to be recruited, play games, drink grog and play tunes with.

Loading into the game could immediately take you here as it would act as the Tower like in Destiny. It's nice that there is currently a Matchmaking system in place to generate random crews together, and that system should/could be kept, but it would also be nice to see and communicate with other pirates to form a crew the old fashioned way.

As for implementing this pirate hub island/city, we all know Rare has said that "safe zones" will never be a thing, and I for one agree with that, so this is where the death tax system could come into play. If you kill someone, they shouldn't be penalized for you randomly deciding to kill them, but if you kill someone out of cold blood and then you get killed, gold gets removed from your account and is added to theirs. Even though it's been said that there is no honor among thieves, this is where you could instill some honor given the pirate code and death tax penalty.

Thanks for reading and feel free to expand on this idea if you liked it!

  • I think this NEEDS to be implemented, but the "Tortuga" like idea has been posted in many posts now. I think we should be using one big post to add all ideas about this lobby/social place so this ideas doesn't get lost in the forums.

  • I like the idea of not physically FORCING it to be a safe zone, but rather putting up signs or something in random spots calling it a "safe haven" of sorts. Where you CAN still kill players if you so choose, however be prepared to face the wrath of other players (or not if they just aren't feeling like it at the moment) if you do.

  • I agree. I think forcing safe zones it doesn't fit with the game's main idea.
My idea for a "Tortuga" island would be something like the OP stated: a separate instance of the main world. When you enter the game, you appear in this instance. Is not a safe zone, you can figth, you can shoot and you can make whatever you want, but as it would be populated with pirate NPCS, they can act as "guards" but instead of being a guard itself, they are the tipical pirates that see a fight and they fight too. This would make the zone a "non combat" place without forcing you in any manner.

  • I am not a fan of 'safe-zones' either. I do really like the idea of there being a space where you can load into to just hang out or form a group though similar to the tower.

The problem I see is integrating it into the map, where you could just sail to it. Imagine how many ships would be there, which i can understand would be a nightmare logistically. Even if it was just a place your character spawns and isn't connected to the map there would still need to be multiple instances of it to accommodate that many players. In your example, the Tower in Destiny worked that way, there was only ever so many people in any given instance. Which is fine, but I think would negate its usefulness to a degree. And if there's no ship there, you don't have loot there, so you can't turn anything in for rewards.

I guess to me, I like the idea, but not sure how it would work, and if you can make it work, you loose so much of the usefulness that I'm not sure it would be worth it?

Maybe if they do add mini-games and such, but beyond that, seems doubtful.

  • @mad-pigme I agree with that. Thats why my idea is to be an instance or multiple instances, outside of the open sea instances.
This "Tortuga" instance is a place where you cannot loot anything (wood, cannon balls, bananas) and of course you cannot cash in voyages or treasure of any kind. This should be a place with shops, taberns, player or guild housing, mini-games (cards, arm wrestling, darts, etc), different quest givers, etc.
Obviously, as this is a separate instance of the open seas, in order to travel from open seas to this island, we should have a menu option to teleport, or maybe some kind of portal in the edge of the map or something similar.

  • @mwolfo23 That makes better sense to me. I would say just put some rowboats or launch boats on the shore with an "Press X to travel to ship" option.

Don't get me wrong, I think its a great idea, but will not be useful until they add guilds/fleets, extra merchants, and mini-games. Other wise you will just be standing around looking at the same venders you can on any outpost now and drinking or playing music.

  • This would also be a perfect place to admire other players and the cosmetics items they have put together. Currently the only times I get to see those are while I am trying to dodge blunderbuss fire.

  • Tortuga?

    Bah.

The real pirate haven was Nassau. (I may be biased since I lived there)

  • @mwolfo23 I sort of like this the trouble is it's a real shame that you can't simply sail from this haven onto the open ocean. Makes it less piratey if you have to teleport when you decide you want to set sail...

  • @mwolfo23 But this would not deter anyone from attacking... It just means people will want to start a big brawl.

  • LINKING THIS AS THIS THREAD HAS ALREADY STARTED A DISCUSSION ON THIS: https://www.seaofthieves.com/forum/topic/48911/non-pvp-taverns

  • "Tortuga" could be a garrisoned fortress. PvP as normal, but generates attention from the garrison. Like the skeletons and skeleton fortress of today, except soldiers. The soldiers don't attack until you've given them a reason to. Perhaps the garrison can be overrun, providing another objective like the Skeleton Fortress. Objectives cashed in at the garrisoned outpost are taxed, etc...

  • This is an absolute MUST. A social hub island would be GREAT for this community. A place where you can find other like minded pirates to sails with. Add some games to play on the island such as blackjack or poker where you win and lose each others gold. And some apparel shops. Make it a pvp free zone (per the pirate code, no pirates shall engage in battle while ashore). Let players swap between crew chat and world chat cause its gunna be noisy. Possible name: Thieves Haven
