Yay...fancy hat...cool sails...now what

  • I know I’m not alone on this. I do not give a flying frick about cosmetics. Yay my peg leg is gold now, that was worth saving up days worth of gold grinding! (Not). I understand the apprehension at introducing linear progression “harder for new players blah blah”, but that’s the entire point! A ton players like the early challenge because they know it will be rewarding when they put hours in to level the playing field. I was horribly disappointed to hear there will not be any linear progression. This with AI ships would be an amazing addition to the game. Think, Assassins Creed Black flag, but way more potential. I have already grown bored of this game as like I mentioned, a pretty ship and fancy looking boots are not motivation. Linear progression, please!

  • This is a perfect example of the mainstream gear grind mentality that most modern games have brainwashed people with. I think a fundamental understanding of the games core concept would benefit you a lot. If it turns out that isn’t what your looking for then why purchase the game? Just to demand a complete rework of its structure?

    Ridiculous.

  • No.

The minority does not get to choose how the game is played..

We (most players) do not want any mechanic that is unavailable to lower level players.

If someone sinks me; I want it to be because they are better than me, not because they played longer and got the blunderbuss that does extra damage

  • @maskans

If they add PvE servers, it wouldn't matter.

What you're suggesting would turn this game into another gear grind for PvP superiority.

You've answered your own question as to why this won't happen but brushed if off with "harder for new players blah blah".

  • Agreed. Skins are skins are who gives a crud.
Three months in and everyone will have the same skins anyway. Same titles. Same gameplay styles. Same combat tactics.
Game needs flavor. I don't give a c**p about the 'imagination' defense either. I'm 35, I didn't pay $60 to create my own adventure. I paid $60 to loot pirate booty. I didn't realize that was going to consist of digging up the same boxes on the same boring islands for skins. :/

  • @stem589 I can pretty much tell you, they wont be adding any servers in the forseeable future, pvp or pve. Why? They can barely get the servers they have now working.

So you paid 60 without doing any research into the product?

    That is Rare's fault how?

This is the typical response to players wanting content, sorry, but gear grind mentality isn't a brainwashing we've had. Its what makes games last. Even Lego games, which are based off of a "make your own fun"toy, has content.
World of warcraft hasn't been around for 14 years or whatever because players want a feather in their lantern.

  • Didn't say it was RARE's fault. I'm fully allowed to voice my opinion on this forum in agreement or opposition to the OP. I agree with them in this case. Many people on this forum are expressing the same exact sentiment. Your comment doesn't change anything.

    Seems reasonable?

I mean i could play the alpha, closed beta, open beta, use 14 days of gamepass trial or try it with 10 bucks per month with an actual gamepass... or moaning about how the game should b*******r to my personal needs.

I need my daily dose of endorphins! god d****t!

Why does everyone assume upgrades are flat out damage boosts? Have none of you ever seen any competitive games? Upgrades are never flat out damage boosts, they tailor to your style, that's what is missing here. I want cannons that fire faster but do less damage, I want guns with more ammo and slower reload, i wan't my playstyle to look different then every other player out there, because with 4 hats to choose from my look sure as hell isn't unique

  • Never say never. I have a sneaking suspicion that this game might just change in some fudamental ways as it goes on.

  • @jesus-cane
What makes you so sure that I am amongst the minority? I guarantee a vast number of players would agree that being able to progress and improve their ship and character would be a desiarable option. Also, the addition of AI ships that require upgrades to take down would offer an incentive to not camp low level players that would have far less loot than the difficult AI ship. If some players are terribly opposed to the idea, introduce PvP and non PvP servers, so people that desire cute outfits above all else can farm the gold for them in peace.

  • The game has been out for 4 days...and rare has on more than one occasion stated that the world will be ever evolving. And not to mention there is an end game. Do you know what that entails? The answer is no not really. Rare was pretty real about what this game was going to be before t came out. If you decided to spend your money before trying it or checking reviews then that’s your problem. A majority of the community however is very strongly against your idea. Especially considering it’s game breaking.

  • @maskans said in Yay...fancy hat...cool sails...now what:

Actually now that you put it this way, you are correct there. Never really thought about it from this side before, which is very odd considering... Darn it! Of course... /facepalm

I always just looked at this dilemma from the bloating side. Like why bother if the playfield gets levelled again anyway. I totally forgot that linear progression doesn't necessarily imply the presence of bloating number games or other similar tricks to make games too repetitive instead of having real replay value.

Damn! Difficulty scaling can be masked into items, activities, knowledge and... just stuff! Tactical stuff that is. I feel so stupid right now...

Somebody slap me with a tuna.

The game has been out for 4 days AND I'VE SEEN IT ALL.

  • @sir-rhavi what you fail to understand is that there would be no diversity. People would find out the most meta build and cookie cutter it. Not to mention absolutly demolish new players which is why rare chose to avoid that balancing issue entirely.

What fact? The fact that I've been playing since April 1st, and have talked to countless players, as well as read many threads. There is a group that wants linear progression : it is a small one; therefore I say minority. I could be wrong.

What kind of progression were you thinking?

For sure! i'm counting on it! And when i bear down on them with a build that ins't the most common and they freak out because now they have no idea what my playstyle is or what my ship is capable of, I want to LAUGH as they scramble to understand how their cookie-cutter build is sinking faster then a lead titanic.

How would it demolish new players? In competitive games that have these side-grades, the base build is always an all-around base and never a bad choice.

So you can run different instance content for months at a time...... wash repeat.

Sounds something like the faction rep here, right?

Rare's taken that grind away and said...... there..... you're already max level with the best gear. Do what you want on an even playing field with everyone else.

Nothing against progression. I also play Elite Dangerous on the side.

In this game, Rare wants players to perpetually be on the same even playing field (outside individual experience). In a year, if I stopped playing, I can still jump back into this game and be an asset to any crew.

Game like WoW even offer free lvl boosts because they realize most players don't want to spend a month + to catch up with the content they actually want to do.

  • Progression doesn't necessarily have mean making yourself bigger and stronger.

Hell, this game could just as easily do with an exp/ranking system. Currently the only progression the game has to offer is the merchants, and all of their quests are rinse and repeat fetch missions. It's tedious, and the rewards lacking. We need some variety.

Give me more exciting rewards for reaching milestones. Cosmetics are great and all, but the wow factor falls off when the cosmetics are bland and uninspired. Currently the top tier rewards are kind of meh. I could get something that looks almost exactly the same for 1/10th the effort. The rewards should inspire the chase.

well said, and echos what i was thinking myself. in so many games you unlock different equipment and weaponry, experiment with your play style, and ultimately find what works best (or is most enjoyable) for you. good game devs are always looking for unbalancing issues in these cases, and adjusting regularly. in a lot of these games the base equipment is some of the best, but players still enjoy the variety.
it's disappointing reading how quickly people line up to bash the opinions of others. i guarantee the devs want to hear it. they stated from the start, this game will grow and morph to the tune of the players. i believe in them, and that's why i'm not overreacting now.

  • @toastywrath
No diversity? You expect every player would choose the same options? I just want customizability apart from cosmetics. Perhaps cannons with farther range but do less damage, sails that are larger and provide faster maximum speed but are slower to adjust. I’m not saying spend x to level up your cannons by a flat rate. I’m saying let me grind to customize my combat style. I can absolutely promise you this game will drop off and be forgotten as soon as people unlock the outfit they like or the sails they prefer; because, then what? Now that you have you have a pretty matching outfit what motivation do you have to continue playing? Maybe you individually will keep playing for the experience but I guarantee the majority of players will not.

PEOPLE ASKING FOR CONTENT. Call the reviewers fake news, dumb, or liars, but if all the independent reviewers are saying the same thing it is because something is amiss. When separate people take the same data and come to the same conclusion, it usually has merit.
