Positive Interactions on the Sea of Thieves

  • The Sea of Thieves forums have seen a wave of increased traffic and noise since the Beta—some of it constructive and necessary, some of it extreme in its negativity. I’m not trying to mask any legitimate criticisms or concerns players might have, but I know I’m not alone in the wealth of positive moments I’ve had within this game, even with other players.

The first day of the Beta, I was sailing solo. I saw another sloop anchored at an outpost. I anchored next to it, and the lone crewman began firing at me. Over the sound of his gunfire, I asked if he wanted to team up as a two-boat fleet, possibly searching for a galleon to take on. He shot once more, but I wasn’t sure if he heard me, so I repeated myself, while using the “wave” emote. He didn’t have a mic, so he proceeded to jump up and down on his deck, like some excited puppy (and I giggled like the proverbial school-child). So we set sail side-by-side. We didn’t find another galleon, but we traded cannon-fire with a two-man sloop for a time, with no resulting winners or losers.

The next day, solo again, I followed another sloop for a good 15-20 minutes, to the literal edge of the map. I had intended to fire my cannons and search them for treasure, but when I finally caught up to them at an island, I decided to simply pull out my hurdy gurdy. They boarded my boat, and I expected they would shoot me—most pirates have the “shoot first” philosophy, it seems. But instead they pulled out their instruments, and we made music for a few minutes. I made friends with them, and it turns out they were brand new to the game and had recently been sunk by a ship with the same sails as mine (we found that boat later), so I showed them a few things, and we sailed together for a while. We sailed together on a galleon the next day. Keep in mind, I’m generally averse to talking on a microphone to strangers on the Internet, let alone making friends with them, but this game provided a platform for these positive connections.

In the Alpha, I mostly played alone, and I generally avoided other ships. In the Beta, I tried to be more creative in my interactions—and it paid off. Even at launch, when this game has a bit more content, Sea of Thieves will still be the type of game that doesn’t hand everything to you wholesale. For the full experience, you have to meet this game halfway. If we want a positive community of players, that needs to start with us. When a community becomes toxic, kindness and creativity will be rare, and therefore more powerful.

But I want to hear from others. What positive interactions did you have in the Beta with other players?

  • @icecreammanatee I had several experiences just like the ones you had. I'm glad I did it because it was always so much more rewarding to become the honorary crew member of another ship rather than just putting a few cannon balls into their ship.

  • @icecreammanatee Cross play. Without it, I wouldn't have made half the friends I did during the Beta. This feature alone is worth it's weight in gold (Arrrrr) and gave me too many positive experiences to count!

  • Join in on a game with 3 others. Finding out we all had comms. Coming across a small ship trying to sink us. We sunk them. 13 chests floating in the water.. grabbed all of them made 4000 gold

  • I had a similar experience during the beta, which I didn't expect at all. I was sailing solo when I came across another sloop. We decided to team up and find a galleon to pick a fight with. Instead we only found sloops, who we invited as well. Ended up with 5 sloops in total, a very cute armada. No galleons to be found unfortunately, but it was a very pleasant surprise.

  • Ahoy! I have two interactions to share.
I played Solo for the entirety of this Beta, so I was a bit skittish after Day 3 having read the troll griefing posts popping up on the forum. Luckily I did not encounter too many of these that I couldn't deal with one way or another. I'm also an introvert who is a bit mic-shy and guarded around strangers.

My first positive encounter was with a Galleon of four that crept up on me while diving a wreck. I surfaced, fully expecting my ship to be sinking and a face full of buckshot. They hailed me over comm's and asked if I could assist them with hunting down a rival Galleon. This sounded like fun and a chance to get some big ship combat experience. I allowed the crew to come aboard and transfer my ship supplies to there's. I joined up for sail duty on the Galleon while one of their crew commandeered my Sloop. We proceeded to hunt our prey, using my sloop as bait (small ship and they hadn't encountered if before). The ploy worked and combat ensued, regrettably I DC'd in the midst of the ship battle and couldn't re-join the instance.

My second encounter was a pure test of the community after reading the forums. I anchored my Sloop by a wreck, kept the sails down and lights on and waited. Was not long before I spied a ship approaching, another sloop. I stood on the bowsprit, playing an instrument and shouting Ahoy.
The other Captain heaved to and asked if I was up for helping him track down a Galleon that had been stalking and sinking him for a few hours. I agreed and we spotted another sloop. We approached them, delivering the same missive and they joined up as well. Although with a bit more trepidation as they had only been in-game for 20 total minutes. Our small flotilla sailed off in formation to seek revenge upon this predatory Galleon. None of us were skilled in ship to ship combat, so we failed to sink her but we harried that poor Galleon all the way back to port. I can only imagine the panic on board the Galleon when they got rammed by three sloops, one on the portside and two to starboard. It was great to see a Captain take in-game measures to combat the griefing that he was experiencing in game by bringing them together.

That's my only two encounters, I hope for more. I agree whole heartedly with you about the power and responsibility of the community to strive for positivity.

Fair winds and calm seas to ye good sir!

  • @lonegoatknifer jumped aboard my sloop once and immediately climbed into the crow's nest. I didn't even know another pirate was near until I saw him aboard my ship! Neither of us was using mics and at first I thought he was going to attack or harass me.

But somehow we got to trusting each other and sailed together for an hour or so while completing riddles. Half that time, I thought he might double-cross me and make off with something. But even in the end when some other pirates were attacking my ship and hoping to steal the treasure, Knifer helped unload my chests onto the beach and let me turn them in! Then I was sure.

I steered and he turned the sails. Sometimes he steered and I played music. It was pretty cool for an impromptu experience. Thanks.

But don't everybody go jumping aboard my sloop!

  • I had a great experience with my friend we both had played a lot of the game but were fairly inexperienced because when we play games together we get side tracked very easily but one time a very experienced player joined our crew on a galleon and made friends with us and gave us tips that overall improvrd our experience

  • @conal-cuan I love those stories!

Thanks for sharing, everybody. Keep 'em coming.

  • I tried to play one session as a traveling bard. The idea was to travel with different crews just playing music, getting drunk, and telling stories for a treasure chest or two. I don't know if I would consider it a success but my very first encounter was with a guy without a mic on Crooked Masts. I swam towards his boat while shouting "Looking Good" over NVCs and trying to get him to talk. When I board his boat I see "Let's Dance" and not one to disappoint, I showed him my stuff on the tip of his bow as he swam back towards his boat.

We joined in song for a few minutes before he headed back to shore to find his treasure. I went with him, playing music the entire time and then we shared a pint of grog together on shore. While he started looking for his treasure I scoured the island and found a random chest to add to his haul. I am about to start looking for him now when he approaches with his map out. Apparently he is having trouble. I whip out my compass, zero in on the X, and let him know where to dig where he hits pay dirt.

We head back to his ship where I start celebrating as any true bard would, with music and drink. A few minutes pass and I begin to wonder if he was going to begin his next voyage. I keep waiting until I see a galleon off in the distance. Thinking I had overstayed my welcome I bid him farewell and set off towards the galleon.

About an hour later and I am sailing around looking for someone to join when I see a sloop sailing towards me. As we sailed past each other I am looking for a name and see my buddy from Crooked Mast jumping up and down, excited to see me.

  • @lifewcoke That's great! I think of my pirate as a bard as well.

  • @icecreammanatee The Ferry of the Damned is a great place to meet folks if you got the patience. You can pretty much count on every pirate visiting it at least once.

  • @lifewcoke Very true!

  • I would have liked to experience simular experiences as the restof you, sounds like alot of fun!

Unfortunatly me and friend got shot on sight every time when we encountered somebody, even when we would both have our instruments out or tell them we come in peace over game chat. Which is part of the game obviously lol.

Hope to get some of those friendly encounters when the game releases!
