Reason why: I'd like to see legendary NPC ships in the game. You and your crew would be able to find these legendary ships while exploring the open sea's.
What is on a legendary ship?: After sinking a legendary ship you would be able to find legendary chest's, would make sense that a legendary chest is on a legendary ship.
Wouldn't it be hard to sink this ship?: Well yes the ship will be very powerful and strong stack up on cannon balls and wooden planks you will need them.
Is it worth fighting these ships?: I'd say it'll be a fun experience for everyone on your ship. It will be a tough challenge but very rewarding

Legendary Ships
I'd rather just see a much larger variety of ships - everyone starts small and can upgrade.. but if your ship gets sunk, you lose it and start over with a small ship. It would make battles more meaningful since everyone wouldn't just attack for the sake of attacking. It would be risk vs reward. At the same time, when a ship is sunk, it would be good if you could salvage more then just the basics.. maybe get a cannon..etc..
My overall feeling of the game (and I realize there is a lot that is left out) is that they spent a ton of time on graphics and making it work but a lot less time on depth.. it is very basic. I feel there is so much potential that can hopefully be expanded upon as it goes on.
@el-soter Something like this would be cool. I wouldn't want said ships to mess up whatever it is I'm doing though. For example, I wouldn't want to be chasing down another ship, or on my way to handing in chests only to get spanked by a legendary.
Did you ever play Assassins Creed: Black Sails? They had 4 (or 5, depending on how you look at it) legendary ships that were very fun to fight.
There has been talk to community events that encourage players from different crews to work together to take down the objective. The talk was specifically for forts, but this could be really good for your idea too.
@faramous I have played AC: Black flag
I was saying that legendary ships could appear out of nowhere
but I do like your idea of how they could make it a public event for people in the server.@faramous Legendary ships could be the Man-o-War but I don't know what time period this game is set in
@el-soter Yeah good point. I guess it depends on what the devs would want to do. I mean there's a fantasy element to the game, so they really have a huge sandbox of possibility. They can pretty much do whatever they want, as long as it's done well.
I found this list of ships from the golden age of piracy link
and then, for those that played the old RTS Cossacks, there was the absolutely mental Victoria:
@faramous Also wouldn't mind seeing the famous Captain Black beard or Captain Morgan with a lot of grogs on his ship
@faramous also wouldn't mind in game dlc with special riddles to solve or new maps, if someone in your crew has the dlc riddle/ quest then everyone will be able to participate in it
@erikinthebakery Bananas with peels are good but it would make sense for meat to heal you a little bit more.
@maytrix no that idea just no so i finally get a big ship then it sinks while im a t a outpost got to start over again ?

I don't think it was to be a "dark soulsish" pirate game. Its differently more geared towards the casual player someone that only plays for a few hours a day.

Again I think it was more geared for someone that only games maybe a few hours a day rather then someone that games 6+ hours a day.
Those are interesting ideas! I love black flag, it's one of my favorite pirate games. However Sea of Thieves is a different type of game. There's definitely more content planned like more merchants, different wildlife, types of voyages, world events, lots of customization etc!
As for npc ships, Rare has stated on multiple occasions that those will not be part of the game. I think a lot of people are mistaken about the type of game Rare is making. It's a shared world adventure and a lot more casual than an mmorpg or action adventure game. It revolves more around sharing experiences with other real gamers and having fun. Obviously the game should still have content! Just have to keep expectations realistic :)
Although I'm a huge fan of this idea, the core concept that keeps me engaged in Sea Of Thieves is the genuine fear of seeing a ship. Rare are aiming to keep NPC ships out of the game for this reason. However, they are introducing the Kraken so, we'll see what they decide to do.
But IF they decided to go along with NPC/AI-Controlled Ships I want them to be scarce. In my opinion, I'd love to see only one NPC roam freely around the map. No specific place, no specific time.
I particularly want to see this ship be the Ferry of The Damned roaming the waters. And for example when you come in to close proximity - a fog builds, your lanterns are blown out, the music swells and the sea is quiet. It'd be the scariest and most heart-pounding experience every time.I'm a fan of your idea, however it requires careful execution in my opinion.

I think 1 solution is that an outpost should be a safe haven of sorts.. meaning all Pirates realize it is a place not to attack and anyone attacking a ship there would be attacked by cannons from the outpost itself. This way a ship in an outpost, should be fairly safe.
Every place else, that is the risk. It just means attacking for the sake of attacking wouldn't make sense - there would have to be more reward. Right now the risk vs reward isn't there.. there's no risk to attack anyone.
