Please don't leave Hunters Call behind

  • Of all the factions in Sea of Thieves, the most overlooked one is the Hunter's Call. It is a fantastic idea of a guild about going out and hunting the animals and monsters of the Sea of Thieves and becoming a Legendary Hunter. However, over the years since it was introduced, the Hunter's Call has become completely abandoned by Rare without a single update to the faction aside from adding nameplates to the fish (which we are ALL thankful for.) With season 11 increasing every faction to 500 it begs the question of why the Hunter's Call was left behind. I believe there are very simple ways to make the faction more enticing to pirates without needing to create brand new monsters as many suggest (although would still be appreciated.)

I believe the first step is to finally add voyages. We have already had time limited events of traveling to certain islands to fish in particular spots. Why it was time limited is a good question but making it the baseline voyage for beginners would be a perfect way to start. For higher tier voyages similar to the lost shipment voyage of the Merchants Alliance, you could have to follow the trail of a particularly dangerous Megaladon that has been terrorizing the trade routes. This would be a fun way to tie the lore of the two voyages together as the Merchant Alliance sends their own to grab the manuscripts while the Hunter's Call sends hunters tp take out the Megalodon (or possibly even Kraken) that attacked them.

With the addition of diving and raids in season 11, perhaps a new world event could be added that helps to introduce more variety to the world. One of the best parts of Sea of Thieves is the possibility of battling the Kraken or Megaladons. However, with how often world events are going on you almost never see the Kraken or Megalodons which leaves our a huge portion of the sandbox. A new world event that is centered around battling one or more waves of Megalodons and Krakens possibly even stronger variants of them would make a very interesting world event.

Of course these are all just different ideas I have thought about and I am curious to see what the community would think but more importantly Rare please don't leave the Hunter's Call behind.

  • You know what, I kind of really would like to hear an answer to this... Fishing to me is just a means to get food in the roar, but why does Hunter's Call still exist?

They removed the Sea Dogs, so we know Rare will remove stale organizations from the game when need be. Yes, they were probably a casualty of removing arena, but still they were removed from the game. Yet, HC didn't receive any update when every other trading company got 425 more levels (470 for Athena's).

They've got to be planning something. Giving every other trading company 400+ virtual ranks but not touching HC would have been the perfect opportunity to remove it if they weren't planning on doing something with it eventually. I wonder why they're keeping it on life support...

  • The idea of Hunter's updates always makes me nervous because it could kill off the organic hunt if they don't preserve it in their design. Adding new milestones and comms for non-organic kills would be alright but without that they would just be ending one of (imo) the best parts of the game.

There are some things that happened in this update that are huge for hunter's call. Most won't really realize it or care but it's a big deal for meg hunters and QoL improvement for meg hunting (if they keep and maintain it)

The meg timer is not resetting at a high rate during merges, dives, or after sinks.

This is a big deal because it opens up the session for sinking, diving, and merges. It allows more adventure for meg hunters while also making meg spawns far more consistent for casual players.

It's not an official improvement for hunter's call and it might not even be fully intentional (I am choosing to see it as intentional and thus an improvement via change) but it's awesome for Hunter's call and meg hunters as well as just casual players that enjoy meg sightings.

This season is really really good in general for adventure and the improvements with emergent spawns is icing on the cake.

  • They could at least finish some of the sets, for example the inky ship set doesn't have a crest. They could add inky logbooks and so forth.

Kraken toy trinket, meg tooth trinket.

There is a lot they could do without reinventing the whole wheel.

  • Hunters Call exists because we wanted fishing in the game. Needed a reason to add fishing poles after all.

Now, they did in a podcast “reveal” something about the kraken and HC becoming something.

  • @burnbacon we hear what we want to hear i guess. what i heard was the kraken is what it is. they made a variation of a kraken encounter for the tall tale and thats about as far as they intend to go with that.

more they did hint at a hunters call update and something about moby d... so whaling possible though i think that is a very sensitive issue. as its generally accept to be bad irl despite some counties still doing it.

  • Hmmm, wait ‘til next season…

  • Perhaps being able to dive to a Meg (or just plonk someone down on a server and spawn a Meg on them) would interesting, with the caveat that it cannot be the shrouded ghost.

I too am puzzled why HC was specifically left out of the trading company overhaul, and why it consistantly is ignored.

Rare spawn fishing locales, Meg voyages, incorporating megs who have swallowed quest mcguffins, etc, it doesnt seem like it would be difficult to expand on HC.

Zany stuff like harpoon rowboat Meg surfing, there is so much room to fill it in

  • @soulstinger2k20

I killed a meg the other day because my crew was running GH and we were a tick away from EG5 so we hunted the meg instead of digging an X. I don't recall if it dropped one of the new loot items, but there is zero reason why it shouldn't, like emergent captains now dropping the new skull or shipwrecks having the new loot, or bottles having the new loot. It would make megs desirable to engage with, at least for a little while.

I haven't met a kraken since S11 dropped; does it drop any of the new loot or is it still just a speed bump in the parking lot?

I've been seeing the kraken like crazy since s11 dropped. I attribute it to the world events being cycled more with the advent of raid voyages.

From what I've seen (and I don't always stick around to scoop the kraken loot), it does not drop any of the new treasure.

  • Fishing competitions? Leaderboards for fish caught? Anglers outfits to match fishing rods, more treacherous plunder? Even more commendations. I enjoy fishing a lot, but feel that hunters call could do with an update.
