5th anniversary/Season 9 preview tomorrow

  • Looking forward to learning about what's to come.. been a few sneak peaks at new items but not much else has been leaked yet over the past few days.

Most assume we will see a return of Captain Jack and I'm sure we will.

There has also been complete silence about what Lucid games have been up to?

I'm going to guess something no one's talking about.. Sea of Thieves going to PlayStation for season 9 🤪

Anyone else got any unusual guesses?

(Dont forget, No breaking NDA's insiders)

  • @needsmokes unlikely a PlayStation release considering we’re 5 years in and that Rare is an Xbox game studio.

Pirates Life…hmmm not likely, been no build up to it.

It sounds like we’ve got some nice QoL changes coming so I reckon that’ll be the focus this season :)

  • unless they have a major change or a major collab under wraps it's like going to be a quiet season with more low activity like 7 and 8

they either need a pve activity flood or a game changing approach to a session that really motivates long term players, not just cheesy convenience stuff, actual motivation to consistently participate. Not just throwing in another world event or something that people aren't going to do beyond a couple of weeks.

What will be important is how they implement things they put in the game and how they react to bugs and major feature issues. They don't have a great record on either of these so hopefully that improves in 9.

7 and 8 both suffered greatly from priorities not being focused where they needed to be to keep activity alive and from how they implemented the changes.

Hg has a tremendous amount of burn out in it right now, there are some other games people are getting into as an escape from SoT frustrations, hopping pvp is going to return and run off activity during season 9. I wouldn't buy into too much hype that people often push right before a season, sets expectations high and just leads people to grumpily communicating their frustrations based on disappointment from over-hype.

They have people sharpened and battle tested exiting HG and looking for action, they likely made the issues worse long term for a short term break as they only buffed quick action play.

  • Yeah. I’m gonna skip (maybe) S9 and wait for the promised “big changes” if we go by all the sneak preview and all the YouTube videos discussing it

Just doesn’t look like the big update I heard about yet.

If the harpoon thing is actually a thing that might get me back into selling some treasure again rather than just leaving it for other people, especially as a solo that does a lot of fleets and if I start selling treasure again I'll start using using emissaries again. So that would be good for the environment if it attracts enough people at similar points of their piracy.

Convenience for treasure gathering/hauling/selling is much more acceptable now in risk reward as it counters some of the imbalance on the pvp side. I've said for a while I think reapers can use a harpoon too to balance out risk that went up over the years through hopping.

I never agree with the supply buffing that they do but many of the features outside of that have generally made the game better.

So even if the qol features don't drive a lot of activity hopefully they are things that make the session more enjoyable without sacrificing balance of risk/reward.

take/store really grew on me and I'm not even someone that gathers supplies, if they add more qol to supply organizing that would be great

  • @wolfmanbush oh the harpoon thing looks amazing! The moment I watched that video I let out a little scream of excitement. Doing sea forts and merchant cargo runs are gonna be a breeze now :)

With sea forts being close to outposts and convenience being added for loading/unloading/selling they are really forming a solid path for newer players and casuals. Bringing down the time requirement and risk for mid level treasure can go a long way in supporting a system that isn't so discouraging to so many.

When losses aren't so harsh it allows people to attach to the game more and hopefully stick around longer.

  • @wolfmanbush exactly! The little improvements really are going to add up and make the game a better experience all around, especially, as you said, for newer players and the like.

  • How long do the streams normally last AND can we watch a replay?
