Can we have a Triumphant Sea Dog update for the Hourglass feature?

  • In case you aren’t aware, halfway through the life of the Arena, Rare revamped it. They added a new set of commendations and cosmetics to try and revive the Arena. Clearly that didn’t work. Can we get some new goals to work for?

As it stands now, unless you’re aiming for the golden curse variant, there is no rewards past level 200 in both factions. The Skeleton Curse is very limited in its cosmetic and there is no Reaper themed ship set or clothing to be earned. We need a Legendary Sea Dog and a Triumphant Sea Dog type of cosmetics for both factions.

We essentially need a brand new cosmetic set for both. A unique and not a recolor. The Legendary Sea Dog type cosmetics should be awarded around level 500 and up and the Triumphant Sea Dog type should be past 1000.

Just to be clear, I’m not asking to bring back Arena cosmetics. I’m asking for cosmetic like we had in the arena to give us something to work to

  • Pretty sure focusing on adding more rewards between 1 - 99 would be a way better choice for now.

Arena awarded you often. There was always a "short term goal" while you grinded for the long term ones.

Battle For The Sea Of Thieves should feel that way before adding any more "endgame" cosmetics.

  • Yes, I agree im both cases. Both before the curses and another past the curses.

Take a look at the original 3 trading companies, they had an item every 5 levels and was setting short term goals that made the journey a bit more appealing. Athena's fortune has a ghost item every level because leveling up Athena's fortune was really hard back in the day since it only had the normal quests that rewarded a chest of legends at the end of each voyage. With a progression so slow the incentive was to unlock the next reward at the next level. It had short term goals to make the journey more enjoyable.

The new factions are lacking this, the only things that are on the road are 10 titles and 5 figureheads. Each title is gained every 10 levels and each figurehead is unlocked every 20 levels (and figureheads being similar). For someone who can win constantly and relies on streak they may not feel too much of a difference but for rookies and casuals who lose over and over it feels like an eternity to get to the next reward because of how slow it is with only loss xp.

The difference between winning xp and loss xp is huge and it kills the motivation for those who try but cannot win just yet. In a PvP game there are winners and losers, and both sides should feel motivated to keep going or else the playerbase will be reduced. If only one side is feeling actual progress the other one may quit. If the game mode is very low on population then not even the cross-stamp migration matchmaking will help. It needs a healthy flow of players to keep it alive.

Why not reward the losing players with more allegiance if they managed to get a lot of water in the winner's hull? I think that would be a good way to measure performance for the losers instead of giving the exact same ammount of reputation. The max level of water that reached the hull should be an indication of how well a player performed.

It feels horrible to spend a lot of time fighting just to get a tiny portion of allegiance.

  • @coffeelight5545 I can picture the offense already when they release a rebrand of tsd and lsd 😅

  • I really don’t want any incentives past 200 with how slowly this levels up. Would be more accepting if Rare had not listened to the sweaty grinders who asked for it to be harder to level past 100 because they already hit 1000.

Those aren’t casual players. Those are over the top players who are now gatekeeping their rewards that they unlocked before everyone else. Now a casual player will likely never get a golden curse just because of how ridiculously slow it is to level up. With the old leveling system, it would have taken 1800 wins to reach 1000 without any streaks. Now it’ll take even more…

And there’s a title at level 9999 for both factions. Nobody will ever get those and the Faction Title counter will never go above 10/12 for most, and never above 11/12 for those who reach gold.

The XP system needs to be made easier. There is no reason for it to be so slow. Players like to log off for the night feeling like they made a leap towards success. Nobody likes to log off saying “Well, I can add another tally to the table. Only 2,999 more.”

It’s gonna scare people off of getting even the normal curses. Forget getting the rewards from 100-200, those will be ridiculously rare in the coming year if they don’t rethink their system.

Before people come and call me weak and whiny and say i’m asking for it to be easier because I’m bad, I’ve got both factions up to 200, and I can say it wasn’t fun. At all. I did it because I was afraid that i’ll not be able to in a few months because I seriously fear for the health of this mode. We need to make it easier so everyone can feel good about it, and the gold curses and level 9999 can be the sweat’s special little secret mountain to climb. There’s no reason to make it hard for a casual player to make progress, because they won’t commit themselves to it if they don’t feel like it is worth the time. And that happened with Arena. The newbies gave up and the sweats were left to duke it out, and unless you’re a psycho, battling sweats 24/7 isn’t worth it. Dying immediately or sweating for an hour to sink a ship who makes no mistakes for the same xp as a random newbie is not fun.

  • @klutchxking518 was it requested to make grind harder? Didn't see that. I had assumed that rare did it based on their own observations of how quickly some were levelling up

  • @hiradc Rare claimed that it was due to feedback. Whether or not it was, it was a bad call for the health of the gamemode. Nobody likes to grind a slow and painful and tedious grind with little to no checkpoint rewards on the way. The base curse needs to be easier, reaching 1000 needs to be easier, the WHOLE THING needs to be easier just because of two facts:

1: All this effort is 2x because every single thing you do, has an opposite faction where you need to do it again.

2: There’s a title at 9999. In both factions. Why? And why would we make this level up slower when that’s already insane?

    This. This right here.

On topic though; something that could be nice to add before the 100 allegiance mark, could be a fitting ship set to the figurehead. The magpie ship set doesn't really fit the Guardians of Fortune figurehead.

Would also love to see something extra fancy cosmetics added to earn down the line before -and- past allegiance 200. Take the mysterious stranger set fx. maybe add a somewhat similar, glorious version of that with some gold embroiding, purple coloring and glowing athena mark on the back. Something prestigeous and fanciness to show off. Could pair nicely with the current PL outfit too, so you could mix it up.

It’s not a rebrand. If you recall, the sea dog cosmetics were unique to the Arena. I want 2 brand new cosmetics that are unique to the Guardians and Servants.
