What's the deal with the bilge rats?

  • Is this going to be a faction thing? I don't understand how they relate to anything else.

Not sure either. I'm guessing they will be the jumping off point for some special events/voyages?...

  • @edemardil They will be used to let players know when events are going on.

  • @xcalypt0x if that's true, the bilge rats are gonna need some more members, talking to the same npc at every outpost is killing my immersion.

  • @jack-littleshoe Someone mentioned that in another thread but I'm having a hard time finding it.

Wondered that myself. Right now they're pretty useless

  • i think they are just there to tell about Merrick to new people, and that they are in every outpost so you don't miss them

I get that, since that is all they do, but there is a huge rat marker on the map and they talk about the Bilge Rats a lot and about getting some scars etc...

  • Kinda Hopin it’s a faction thing that’s in the wind

  • Very good question, but more importantly, why does the useless donkey sniffer have to waste space at the only good table?! Not every pub is situated in Golden Sands with a beautiful outdoor area, some pubs heavily rely on that one specific table! Where am I supposed to sit when real me is grabbing a beer? We need more tables or fewer rats...

  • That Duke fella is more of a tavern rat than a bilge rat. He doesn't look like you could trust the lubber to swab a deck, let alone batten a hatch or haul a brace. I'll bet his raggedy clothes are from sleeping rough behind the tavern after he gets turfed out and not from seafaring as he claims. They got the rat part of his name right though, he's a lying, filthy, land rat.

  • Technically I can't confirm this since it hasn't been explicitly stated by Rare, but it makes more sense if you think about it long term. It seems to me that the rat is there to indicate that an event is currently active in the world. Then you know to go to the outpost to check in with the Bilge Rats and find out where to go to start the event (in this case the location of Merrick).

We know there will be at minimum several more events in the future, so for that reason alone this makes sense. But what we don't know for sure gives even more credence to it, and this possibly even gives us a glimpse of what SoT might look like in the future. They are training us now to know what that symbol means, even though for the moment it's pretty useless.

However, in the future we may have rotating and/or spontaneous events, or server-unique events (similar to skull forts). In addition, these may well be started at specific outposts. In this circumstance, logging into a new server would show us where to go to try to enjoy whatever is currently active. If it's server-specific, it functions like a skull in the sky essentially. If it's not, it's just a helpful tool for people who don't haunt twitter who haven't jumped on in a week or two, and helps ensure they don't miss out.

At least, these are the implications of the system that I see. This is part of why I think some people are jumping the gun with their disappointment with this DLC. They're subtle, but there are strong clues about the future present. And with more (bigger!) DLC on the way in a month, I suspect we're well on our way to seeing the full implementation.

  • What's the deal...

    with these Bildge Rats?!?!

  • @jack-littleshoe I agree with you on that point, why is it the same npc on each outpost, that's not logic...
